link building strategies

There is no doubt when you are building a new WordPress website from scratch, one of the first promotion methods you need to undertake, is employing SEO link building strategies. I recently published a post on this website about what to do before opening your blog to the world. If you have performed all these necessary steps and added some fantastic content, you are now ready to start link building. These link building techniques can also be classed as blog promotion, as link building will not only get you to the top of the search engines for certain keywords, it can also give you instant traffic through the link. Therefore link building techniques are very important for a new WordPress website. ( I am biased towards WordPress, as you can tell)

Different back linking for different occasions

Leaving a backlink on another website can have different effects on your website.

For example a back link might bring:

  • new website traffic
  • it might get you to the top of the search engines (SEO)
  • it might simply get your website indexed in the search engines along with one or two of the above

It can get very confusing when it comes to choosing which ones are right for your new WordPress website. Then we can also get into the do follow and no follow aspect. For a new WordPress website we will disregard whether a link is do follow or not as we are looking for a variety of links to make it look natural. If we just went out and got all do follow links then this is not natural link building.

5 rock solid link building strategies

There are so many places to get back links for your new WordPress website, however in this article I would like to mention what I do for each new installation. This would probably be the bare minimum, just to get the website off the ground.

Start with solid foundations

#1. Make a Plan

Write your link building strategies down will make everything clear to you. People know how great it is to have a plan, that never do it! If they did actually take the time to create a link building plan and tick off the jobs that are done, the whole task would seem a lot easier.

Here are a few things that I include when writing my link building strategies down:

  • identify where your targeted visitors are
  • make a list of your main keywords and your related keywords
  • identify which websites are your competition and research their back links
  • make a list of possible places to guest post on
  • make a list of do follow blogs to comment on (hopefully they have Commentluv installed!)

#2. Get Indexed

Go and get your first back links on a high traffic website. This is to help your new WordPress website get indexed as soon as possible. If you put a link on a popular website or blog, the search engine bots will be crawling that website often, see your link and travel through it to your website.

The easiest places to get a backlink for indexing your website are:

  • Youtube (nofolow but still works) – Once a week minimum.
  • Ezine articles (follow) – Once a week would be good but once a month is OK.
  • Blogger.com by building a blog (Google owns this and Youtube) – Make one backlink a week on blogger.
  • Guest Posting – Submit one guest post a week.
  • Press releases – Once a month, 2 at the beginning.
  • Yahoo answers – (nofolow) but can get you indexed if you have the ability to leave links. (I think you need 250 points to leave backlinks)

Some people wonder why some pages show in search engine results and others don’t? This most of the time this can easily be solved by building some back links to that particular page. I know this sounds terribly simple but this is how it works!

#3.  Start your engines

Grab your plan start taking action! If you are going to have a link building strategy, you need to implement it. Often Webmasters neglect back linking and presume that it will be done naturally for them. Every website starts off back linking themselves, until they get popular enough, when people naturally start doing the job for them. unfortunately new Webmasters make a couple of back links and see no results from this and give up. You need to persevere to see the real results.

Get out into the Internet world and start guest posting, blog commenting, article marketing, and so on. There is no excuse not building back links to your website. Ben lists 18 link building techniques that you can use to get free back links.

#4.  Get the usual basic links

The reason I say you should get the usual back links, is because you should not do anything out of the ordinary to attract unwanted attention. For for example if you get 100 back links to a brand-new WordPress website that has only been launched for one day, this screams automation! However if you go out and make 10 back links on your first day, this says that you are manually making back links the right way. Of course different link building techniques are required depending on the business you are launching. If you have $1 million to spend on advertising, then obviously 100 back links would seem like nothing to that website..

Please share what link building strategies you use on your new WordPress website?

    • Hi Mitz,
I am a newbie and I looking at expanding my business online. Point is, with so many information about marketing your site, it confuses me as to where to start. Your article clearly states the basics (yes the 4 tips means a lot!). I am currently contemplating on outsourcing my PR using Contentbuzz. I hope it would help me rank higher.

creating back links Is something that you have to do continuously. The easiest place to start is blog commenting. You should also create at least one article to post at an article directory like ezine articles or even better still submit it as a guest post.

Once you get used to doing this you can then step it up a gear.

        • Is it better to backlink individual posts or the root domain? If backlinks go to individual posts and assuming a new post is added every 3 days, that leaves very little time to get more than maybe a dozen backlinks to each, will this be enough to rank individual posts?

            Hi Richard.
Hope you don’t mind me jumping in.
Yes, it is recommended you backlink individual posts.
You best try to include the exact keyword you were targeting on that post in your links anchor text, while getting the links from relative, authority sites/posts.
Additionally, you should take similar approach from within your site, linking your posts to and from other posts, and to the homepage, thus passing link juice between them.
As for creating such links, the first thing would be to submit these posts on social sites, then you can add your traditional link building techniques.
            Have a great year,
            Tobi

        • You guys and gals are great! Can you get a real back links on social sites? It seems like they don’t show up. CommentLuv seem to be the easiest and most affective.

The backlinking methods being carried out for new blogs should indeed be slow but consistent. I think I could add up by doing 5-10 backlinks from bookmarking sites as well. 5-10 backlinks a day might be a small number, but the fact that these are for a newly created blog could be indeed the best strategy so far.

    Hi Mitz
I think #1 is the most essential part of link building – making a plan and then doing it!!

I don’t fully understand Press Releases as I always think of them as being something that you do when there is something newsworthy going on. For example if you make a site on golf or perfume – can you still do press releases for them or does it need to be something more newsworthy?

    Thanks

  25. Getting the usual backlinks is the best way for a site to start the link building process. The more natural the numbers of backlinks per day, the more favorable it will be to search engines. For sure, they wouldn’t categorized the site with full of spam links and give the site credit for that.

Youtube links are indeed nofollow, but your channels link to you blogs are dofollow, meaning you need to raise activity on your channel, links pointing to it, and be an active youtube members ( subscribe, share, comment…). This will get you a high pr property that links to your own domain.
