New Orleans June 07 - Living Room
When you walk into your home at the end of the day, you experience one of two feelings: either you let out a sigh of relief or you cringe at all you have to do to bring some semblance of order to your space. Creating an oasis in your home can help you experience the first scenario every time you walk through the door.

Let in natural light

The more light a room has, the more relaxing it feels, but only if that light is natural. Unnatural light from lamps and light bulbs is glaring and harsh. Incorporate as many windows as possible into the room’s design, adding overhead windows if you’re able. Use light fabrics for curtains to allow the light to filter into your home, even while you maintain your privacy.

Embrace nature

Nature, whether it’s in the form of living plants or water in nature-inspired indoor fountains, brings a sense of calm. Feel as though you’re outdoors in a garden while relaxing in your own living room. The faint scent of a flower or the soft sound of flowing water will help calm you as you relax. Add to this natural feeling by using organic materials in your furnishings and linens as much as possible.

Give yourself space

As you create an oasis in your home, make sure you give yourself a space of your own. Whether you choose a comfortable chair in a corner with a bookshelf nearby, a daybed where you can lounge after a busy day or even a desk where a few welcome craft supplies sit, you need a peaceful area where you can unwind. Your space doesn’t have to be large. If you don’t have a lot of room, claim just a corner, but make the space your own. Clear out the clutter, add a comfortable place to sit or lie down and decorate with a few of your favorite items. By having your own space, you will find you’re more prone to relaxation.

Use color wisely

Colors play a huge role in how relaxed you feel. Choose soothing colors for your home, like light blues and soft browns to invite feelings of serenity. Reds, oranges and yellows should only be used as accents, as these increase adrenaline and can create feelings of stress. Dark colors can lead to a sense of foreboding or depression. Keep your decor as light and airy as possible.

Add your favorite scents

Aromatherapy can help you breathe a sigh of relief after a busy day at the office. Calming scents like lavender don’t have to be strong to be effective. Burn a candle or diffuse essential oil to deliver a comforting effect. As an added bonus, the candle can add to the touch of tranquility you are striving to create, all while adding a preferred scent to your home.

At the end of the day, you deserve to come home to your own personal oasis. Whether it’s a clutter-free corner in your home that houses your own favorite things or a carefully designed living area that invites relaxation, you owe it to yourself to devote time to relaxation.

  4. Nice tips. You could also put some plants inside to create greenery. I have recently redesigned my house and made sure that it uses maximum solar energy to reduce electricity consumption.

  5. It’s so important that not only your home but your office is also an indoor oasis! Because I work from home, I try to make my office as tranquil as possible using so many of these tips! My favorite is the natural sunlight. It can really make a difference in an office.

  6. I am currently remolding a foreclosed home ( and blogging about it) and we are just about ready to start painting. The color selection is very important ( and hard) so I hope we get it right. It can make or break the whole project and we won’t be changing it for a while since we are just doing it.

  7. Good tips Matt..I have other suggestion to make our home more comfort. My suggestion is to install skylight in roof. This will allow natural sunlight to illuminate your house for free, especially over rooms that are the darkest. Sunlight is more powerful than any bulb, so the light will flow through much of the room where the skylight is installed.Or add in sun lights which will provide lights in the day time.

    Thanks for posting matt

  9. Hi, Matt. The picture of your room is great, there is something metal near the window, I can’t realize what it is. I don’t have much space for myself just 3 square meters room, however there is a couple of flower pots on the window sill and they help :)

  10. Hi Matt,
Great ideas as everyone needs a place to relax and de-stress. Letting natural light in saves on energy, but also allows one to create outdoor oasis’s that can be seen and enjoyed while being in your home. Even when creating your evening meal, with windows in the kitchen looking out on an oasis you have created in your yard, this will make the daily chore (if you aren’t an avid cook) of cooking for the family more enjoyable and relaxing.
People and businesses should also use these tips in their office spaces or retail outlets. Consider the businesses you have visited lately, which ones made you feel comfortable and want to be there versus the starchy bland walls with no windows, terrible artwork and accessories, etc. I have been to a dentist office that created one wall with huge windows, all chairs faced this window wall, then outside, they created a beautiful garden. That is much more relaxing for customers than staring at a blank wall. For inspiration visit parks, botanical gardens, anywhere outdoors that makes you feel relaxed and make mental notes of what you liked best and brought you serenity at that moment, then incorporate those ideas at your home and business space.

  11. Love all these tips. Working from home, I find that I’m much more productive when my surrounding s are nice. Try as I might to concentrate on work and ignore clutter or messes, my mind can’t fully focus on working if the house isn’t in order. My suggestion would be to create a designated space for everything so that items can be gathered and stored very quickly and easily. This is where baskets and containers come in. Thanks for the good advice!

    • Agreed on the surroundings. There is nothing worse that when you’ve used the computer all day, get up for a cup of coffee and all you can see is everything you need to do to clean up. It’s so distracting. I was going to buy some fabric baskets but my family is pretty allergic to dust…

  12. this tips are just awesome i will surely going to change my home interior to some how…thanks a lot …

  16. The natural light tip is so important, given that most of us who work in an office do so with such little access to natural light. The next best thing is to use the natural light light bulbs
, although they are a fair bit more expensive than ordinary bulbs.

  21. Just to add another one that I find works pretty well in designing special spaces: try to create long views…

Long views through rooms, long views through a small opening to another room, long views from the seating area all the way outside to the garden. The mind perceives space based on how far the eye travels and even smaller spaces can feel very open when natural light and views exist.

  22. We recently built our house and are now in the decorating phase. I want our home to be our santuary, a place where we can come home to and shut the door to the world and all it’s drama.

I’ve just finished decorating the living and dining rooms and am really happy with the result. On Monday night I was laying infront of the fire with a glass of wine & nibblies, reading my favourite magazines, cented candles buring, chillout tunes straight from the French Riviera via the internet radio in the background.

I felt like I was on vacation. The only down side was that I wasn’t on vacation and I had to go to work the next day :( .

  28. Everything which is natural makes everyone feel comfortable. And the house should have windows so that one can get fresh air in the mornings. It feels great to live in a place where everything looks great starting from the walls and ending at your comfort level.

  30. Thanks for the tips Matt – have you considered the chaotic effects of kids though? That for me is the number 1 reason the home feels like an airport departure lounge at peak times rather than an oasis. Of course, we signed up for them and it’s great – but when they have departed for the evening, what’s left is a major clear-up exercise. Any thoughts on that?!

  32. Such great tips – I’ve always felt your home should be a reflection of you and your interests – a beautiful place to take refuse in after a long day away. It’s not always easy to achieve – especially when you are on a budget, but some thought and planning can make your home truly yours.
