How To Improve Your Search Engine Rankings

Yes you read it right. Building backlinks from slum sites such as porn, gambling and pharmacy can’t hurt your ranking results. In fact you can use such sleaze ball tactics to boost your results on Google. Well, at least that’s what I read from my inbox today. Yet another email from yet another company promising to show you how to improve your search engine rankings.

According to this particular company, who will remain nameless, Matt Cuffs himself confirmed that back links from “bad neighborhoods can’t hurt your search engine rankings. They go on to say the harm comes in when you yourself are linking to such sites. Not sure if that gem was from Matt or something they came up with on their own.

Let’s imagine for a minute that this is true. And you are able to get 5,000 backlinks on porn or gambling sites for the amazing price of just $5. Does that make it a good deal? Just for sh*ts and giggles imagine you are dating a porn star. Maybe we’ve all thought of it at some point. You may find some deep down sense of excitement from it but it’s certainly not something you want to tell your mother, or your boss (if you have one) about. Heck apart from your bestie it’s probably not something you’d want anyone to know. Nor is it likely to be something you expect to last.

If you would be too embarrassed to tell your customers you can find me linked “here” then its a no brainer that you don’t want to be linked there. Your reputation is worth more than quick search results. That’s IF you get any results at all. For the sake of argument let’s say your website catapulted to the top the search engines. You are ranked 1 –  5 in 5 of your keywords. Yeah Baby! Now just how long do you expect to stay there?

Keep in mind these types of websites come and go with wind and will be taking your backlinks with them. Even if your website did manage to rank from links of such type you will eventually be flagged for unnatural link building techniques. If you want to build back links do it right.

How To Improve Your Search Engine Rankings

  • Put
    in the work
    –  build a website worthy of people’s time, money or attention. Dedicate time to your website. Don’t build it and neglect it. Take the time to cultivate it. Nurture it and bring it to life. Great websites don’t just happen. They come about with hard work and determination. The more people notice you, talk about you and share you with their friends the more the search engines will notice you.

  • Pave The Road Ahead –   Know the focus as well as the vision for website. What is your main goal? Do you intend to be a blogger providing your own content or do you plan to utilize the guest bloggers? Do you wish to start an e-commerce site such as my wedding album boutique? Whatever your plans Know your goals in advance and consistently build upon them. As with all things your site will evolve over time but don’t force it. You don’t want to keep trying “the next new thing”. Don’t confuse your viewers or the search engines with fly by night schemes to get ahead.

  • Be consistent –  Develop a posting schedule. If you are a blogger develop a consistent posting schedule that you will actually be able to maintain. Don’t set yourself up to fail. If you feel hesitant you can’t commit to 5 posts a week then don’t set that as your goal. You don’t want to build your readers expectations and then let them down.

If you are an e-commerce add product consistently. If you specialize in one or a few products only then be consistent with your marketing. Let consumers know of any updates or offer any sales or specials. Remember search engines look for activity. Consistent quality content will help you maintain those good rankings you’ve worked so hard to achieve.

  • Be Patient –  Yes, we all want it and we all want it NOW. But that’s not possible. So for now be patient. Follow the steps above and bide your time. Hopefully you’ve invested in a business you love and all the time, attention and elbow grease is fun for you. In the meantime remember, it is just as important knowing how NOT to increase your search engine rankings as it is to know how to improve your search engine rankings.
