I would not call my websites ugly but they are quite simple and the thing is, they make money. There are many Webmasters with websites that would love to make money and some have loads of traffic but still cannot earn a cent. What is the problem here?

Well the problem of not being able to make money on a website is bigger than we think. Many Webmasters seem to be successful but cannot admit that their websites do not cover their expenses and do not cover the hours they invest working on these sites.

Why Ugly (or not) Simple Websites Can Make Money

An UGLY website is really in the eye of the beholder and the users. As long as your website is user friendly and is built for human enjoyment, you might gracefully pass the UGLY test. Who cares what it looks like if it converts and makes you money if that is what your goal is?

Non Simple websites can be both distracting and annoying to your reader.

If you are trying to create a successful WordPress website and make money, here are a few things that you should NOT do:

Waste Time on Unnecessary Stuff

I see many Webmasters spend too much time on weird and wonderful jobs and not enough time on the strategy of the website.

Here are some of the time wasting tasks:

  • Redesigning the website once a week. Remember a plain minimalist WordPress theme is very effective.
  • Generating traffic that goes nowhere and does nothing.
  • Completing tasks that have no impact or benefit for the website.
  • Learning how to make money online when they should be working.

Really? This time wasting thing is so common that you are probably committing all of the above offences.

Great Content but Then What?

Most Webmasters know that you need quality content to make a great website but unfortunately that is not the end of the story. Many Webmasters presume that the content will make them money and make them famous. This will not help if you want to earn money from your blog or website.

I have seen some absolutely fantastic content, but when Webmasters expose the monthly earnings, all we see is a sad story behind all of that work. Unfortunately these Webmasters are blogging away but earning no real income.

This just proves that great content will not put money in the bank. You need to have a purpose for the content and you also need to be selling the right products. This brings me to my next point.

Generating Traffic for NO Purpose

Many Webmasters say that you should wait until you get loads of traffic before

monetizing your website. I strongly disagree with this and I believe that you should monetize your website as soon as possible because if you drive the right traffic to the right page you will make money.

If you think you have to wait to make money then you really don’t know how to make money online and this is just admitting that fact.

Think about it? A webmaster can make an ordinary blog post and place an affiliate link within the article and to make money from this link. They have two choices here, they can post this article on an already established website and make money for sure, or they can post this article on a new website and drive the right traffic to it to make money. In each case the way traffic is driven may be different but to make sales, the outcome is the same.

You do not need to have a big website or a big following to make money. You can easily start making money if I create content that has a purpose. The problem is, Webmasters create links to the homepage that has no goal, or to any content on the website that also has no goal.

Having a simple, but not ugly website, will make your visitors goal obvious to them. The less distractions the better.

Not Tweaking Conversions

Many Webmasters make a sale and celebrate. I immediately investigate. This is something that is a part of any business. You need to analyze your success and repeat it over and over again.

How does your website make conversions or make sales? If I ask you this question you should know the answer.

What type of blog post makes sales? Where should the links or banners be placed within the blog post? What type of products our most likely to sell in these posts?

One way to keep your eye on your conversions is to track all affiliate links on your site and in your email campaigns.

Here is a quick video showing how to track your affiliate links.

The Moral of the Story

My answer is to buy a premium WordPress theme and be done with it. (most are seriously minimalist) Then create fantastic content and promote it. Make sure each piece of content has a goal. That is it in a nut shell. After that, see what results appear and make adjustments. Don’t waste time on tasks that see no benefits. This is why I have UGLY simple websites that make money. :)

  1. Well, Ugly and Simple is not a big deal. I come to the site for the info…of course I don’t want to read red text on green background but as far as the site is simple (even ugly in a way) I can handle it. it is like going to the coffee shop to get some awesome Brazil coffee, and i absolutely don’t care whether I buy it in a posh luxury shopping mall or in a tiny corner shop next to my house.. it is all about coffee first of all, oh, I mean content)) and coffee)))

Awesome article, Mitz! Right to the spot!
I believe this is one of the rare articles around the internet nowadays that is written by someone who genuinely knows their thing when it comes to creating a profitable website!
While some, as you say, generate traffic for no purpose, there is also the opposite case – where people have great content, but spend ALL of their time writing it. They don’t do networking at all!
So those articles go to waste, their authors thinking the content itself was the problem, when really the problem was the total lack of promotion.

  9. There is some good insight in this article. Thanks for posting!

I think that websites and blogs should be “simple” in that they should not confuse the visitors. At the same time, I feel there is a common misunderstanding among people who think that “simple” means “low-budget” or “tacky”. If your website looks like it was thrown together in 5 minutes, it could have the most valuable content in the world, but I will skip to something that shows that someone took a moment to make it look presentable.

My view is that ideally you have quality content with a solid goal and a layout that is simple and easy for the visitor to follow but also tight and presentable.

Nice post, and thanks again for sharing!

  12. Hi Mitz,

Great article. I agree with you that many simple sites are the nicest. For the longest time I was looking for a simple site that could be modified to my needs. Thesis was one of them but it was too technical for me so I abandoned it.

I think that clutter distracts people and too much monetization could mean distraction as well. I think that even when monetizing a website one must consider simplicity.

By the way, I do not think you website is ugly. Which plugin are you using for the related articles on the bottom of your posts.

I know my sites are not that ugly but they are simple. I was really just using “ugly” as an example for a way a site might look. The fact is that it does not matter if the users like it and complete your goals.

When I first started out I did really have an ugly website as I hand built it in html. But people still loved my website as they needed the information that was on it. Seriously the website could have looked like anything and they wouldn’t care because it had some answers.

The plugin on my site is SEO Auto Links, the pro version. I do not use the auto linking but it has other amazing features.

I think that the market to which you are speaking is a big determining factor. ‘Simple and/or ugly’ may not be appropriate for say, the luxury market, which is often about recreating ambiance and influencing mindset toward sumptuousness. A plain and uninspired design is not going to fit with the mindset of the people to whom the site wishes to cater. Fashion is another example of an industry that needs wow factor as well as good, hefty content. Good read.

Ugly is what I would use to describe sites that make too much of an effort to look sleek–minimalist, however, I’d call simple and honest. They’re the real beauties when it comes to profits.

I appreciate what you say about having simplistic websites. Just yesterday we had a person that came to us with a website that talked you through every element of their website, explaining how to navigate it. They didn’t realize that the person that was talking was interrupting a person’s experience on their site. Nothing is worse than visiting a site when scanning the web and have something scream at you and you don’t know how to turn it off. The sites I like the best are simplistic and easy to navigate. Stick with the KISS principle, people, and Keep it Simple, Stupid. ;)

Driving traffic to a site before monetizing is really dependent on the service the site offers… A dating site for example will find it hard to generate an income with no members where as one that has 100 members is a lot easier to monetize…
