Firstly, let’s get things straight. What Google calls “˜Search Plus Your World‘ is actually “˜Search Plus Your Google+ and Picasa Accounts’. Google have just dramatically changed the way we search by allowing users with Google accounts to search “˜globally’ or “˜personally’. One is your traditional Google – which still uses Web History and Search preferences – and the other mashes up web results with a collection of photos, posts, pages and profiles from your Google+ account.
If you don’t have a Google+ account yet, look at my example. Be sure to get signed up and add me to your circles.
Google’s aim is to allow you to search through your life
– your photos, things you’ve written, pages you’ve +1′d – and also what your friends have shared. For example, if you search on Google and have a Google+ page the results are more likely to produce results from people in your circles, and not the hundred other sites with the same info. Similarly, if you know you took a photo of something but can’t find it, Google will show you photos you have taken in search results. Google filters your results based on your likes, your activity, your content and your location, making search more personal than ever before.
If you are an SEO you’re probably about to cry – you’ve spent so long getting a page to rank on global Google results and Google has gone and changed search so that unless a searcher has already interacted with you or their friends have interacted with you then you won’t appear in their personalized results page. If you need further advice please visit my SEO training page.
How does this change the focus of SEO?
At the moment, personalised search is only available for Google.com when users are signed into Google+. It also only draws information from Google+, which although phenomenally popular for such a young social network, is nowhere near as big as Twitter and Facebook. Chances are everyone will still use global search to find what they want. However, if you do appear in personal searches that’s even better right? Correct!
Popularity and buzz on Google+ have become very important. Currently, the best way to feature in “˜Search Plus Your Life’ is to really build up your Google+ presence. Get as many followers as possible, create content that people will share and encourage people to +1 your website and blog posts. The more followers you have, the more people are talking about you on Google+ and the more +1s you have, the more personal search results you will appear in. With that said be sure to add me to your circles.
What’s great about appearing is that unlike a traditional search result with a snippet from your website or meta data, people know that pages come recommended by you. When searching for a product, users are shown results that have been shared and +1d by their friends – the best type of recommendation!
So get out on Google+ and make sure your brand is as visible as possible. Don’t hold off on your other social networks though as I predict that in the future others will open up to Google and people will be able to search through all their social profiles. Then it really will be “˜Search Plus Your Life’. Also, don’t abandon your usual SEO efforts as global search will be the main method of searching for a long time to come.

I’ve held off on Google+ so far because I didn’t really see a point in it. I guess this might force me to go ahead and start establishing a useful account there.

HI Josh, Yeah it may be best to bite the bullet and at least setup an account. I don’t really use mine that much at the moment but perhaps once I start to get in some more circles I may be more motivated. But since G is the big dog and they want you to play with them you might as well be in line to do so.

You mentioned the search is only affect by users logged in, is there a significant amount of users logged in at all times? I know the only time I’m ever logged into my google account is if I forget to log out of my gmail.
I guess what I’m asking is if there are enough users being affected by these search results to really invest a lot of attention into focusing on this instead of SEO?

Man Rob I’ve been hearing a lot about Google+ lately as far as getting traffic and ranking well. It’s basically time to accept the fact that what we knew as SEO is DEAD.. Gone are the days of getting to the top of Google by typing a keyword rich article. It’s going to take more than that now. Especially with the Panda updates. I’m glad my site is fairly new. That way i still have a chance to add my edge to it and work on building my presence in Google+

Yes welcome to SEO 2.0 or whatever you want it to be post Panda. It’s a good move but I’m still feeling the effects on an older site so it that regards it sucks. But like with all tornadoes you need to rebuild and hopefully stronger next time.

Great informative article. I am already using Google Plus but I don’t mind to check the personalized results. From personal experience I believe that doesn’t affect that much SEO for the moment but I don’t know what will happen in the near future. Everything’s possible!
Thanks for posting!

Just because I know someone does not mean that we like the same stuff. I might be oversimplifying things or I am not getting a clear picture of what they are doing but why with the search results when we already know that global search results are reliable?
Twitter: kezanari
Rob for me personally I think it’s only a matter of time before Google +1 explodes in popularity. The reason why I say this is because Google are giving out incentives to Webmasters To jump on the bandwagon. The incentives include things like improve rankings and SEO and the rel=author (which I love). Once the Webmasters and bloggers are all board is only a matter of time before the users follow suit.

True that. The only way to make it work is to target the webmasters first. Then after the majority of sites have it plastered all over the sites and everyone gets used to it the next logical step is sign up and start using it.

There can be no doubt about it that Google has raised the bar for the importance of Google + for anyone with an online presence. They have said they would for a while now, and now it becomes almost a mandatory issue to have a Google + presence. Sort of a do or die thing.
Thanks for all the great info and encouragement for joining/improving G + presence.

Hi Rob,
You have summarized Google Plus enabled search results and its role in SEO in a very good manner. But the problem is that still there are less number of people using Plus 1 than other networks. So we get less number of followers for our blogs.
So, we the bloggers are waiting the time when more and more internet users starting to use Plus One.

It is good to know that global search will remain around for a long time. I would hate for all my hard work to go down the toilet.

Rob Boirun recently posted..Why Cloud Computing Should Be Important For You
It’s definitely imperative that you maintain a presence on Google+, but I don’t think that traditional SEO is dead. Fundamental on-page optimization and link building will continue to be important. However, you do have to place more resources and effort into social media marketing. If you stick by the goal of creating helpful, targeted content that is easy for search engines to find you will still do well. You just need to spend more time getting people to share that information on social sites.

And that is the new test. How social can you be, how much klout do you have. SEO is still important, it has to be, how can a computer determine what a page is about if it’s not SEO optimized. The trick now is the added layer of shares.

You are absolutely correct! Google plus is kickin out over 90 million! Google clearly has taken an idea that is now embedded in the world’s psyche, and has plans to take it to a whole new level.
We all hopefully know already the impact Social Outlets have when attempting to brand our NAMES.
A reader commented here that the traditional “SEO is not dead”, he’s correct it will never die. He also makes a valid point that “Google + presence is imperative”, I would SECOND that and say now is the time to build up quality followers, in the event SEO shifts again. If you can’t please Google or your future customers, who can you please?
Thanks for the overview Rob, and I look forward to more of your insightful articles.
So, Google search is going to depend on external factors also.

Google + is by far the best social platform they’v come out with so far, but how influential do you think it will be? I can’t see them overtaking the likes of Facebook and Twitter, not any time soon anyway!

Last night I started to search for something and I noticed that not only does Google give you the little list under the search bar of personalized results you can choose from, but it also will show the names of people in your G+ circles right in the search bar drop down list..the suggested searches. If you click on one of the people in the suggested search, it will show you all of their G+ information, posts, pictures, 1+’s etc..sorta like your own little cyberstalker directory. I’m not positive, but I think it only does that if you search from the Google search page. I love G+, I’m on there a lot. It’s so much better than Facebook, and has seriously cut down my Twitter time as well. Then, of course, there’s Pinterest..another site that is going to be big for SEO and branding, etc. I don’t think it’s an either/or proposition for either G+ or SEO..you need both..and quality content.
