News of how social media sites and blogging can negatively affect a person’s job or school career is all over the internet and on talk radio air waves, all the time. We’ve all heard the stories of people getting fired for bad-mouthing their company or students getting expelled for defamation of a teacher’s character. Realistically, this doesn’t happen that often; in fact blogging can be a tremendous benefit for both college students and job seekers alike. Blogging can also feed into professional networking opportunities. For example, blogging can be an effective method of pumping up your LinkedIn profile.

Writing Practice

Blogging is also a great way to put your writing skills into practice in the real world and develop stronger communication and organization skills. A successful writer knows to keep their audience in mind when writing. A good writer writes to communicate with others and writes in a language that the audience will understand.

In many college writing courses the students are writing only for the teacher. Unlike writing for a college professor, who is an audience of one, the internet allows for a huge audience of readers, who bring with them a unique perspective on life. Learning how to communicate effectively with people from all sorts of backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses and age groups is one of the most important life skills a person can have. Blogging gives you the chance to practice, craft your writing and improve. Practice makes perfect; the more you do something the better you get at it.

Overcome shyness

It’s not necessary to use your real name when blogging, or any name for that matter. Anonymity can help a person open up and take a stance.

College is the time when many of us are developing our belief systems, becoming exposed to new ideas, and for a lot of people, becoming more politically active and involved. Blogging provides a fairly risk free atmosphere to express your own thoughts. Blogging can help those who are shy or hesitant, become more confident and assertive. So, in addition to pumping up your LinkedIn professional networking, blogging can help pump up your personality.

Improves your skills

Blogging also helps improve computer skills. For those of us who grew up with the internet, starting a blog and maintaining it through commentary and social interaction, while uploading content and embedding YouTube videos won’t be much of a problem. However, older students, who are going back to school to improve their chances in the job market, may not have as much experience and may need some online training in internet communications. Many classes, whether they happen in a traditional brick and mortar school or through an online university, require the ability to be able to upload content onto a group site, take part in forum discussions and provide comments and feedback within a virtual realm. Blogging can help older students learn how to do these things prior to the start of class.

Blogging helps you after you leave college

In addition to improving writing skills and practicing writing, starting a blog while in college can help you in your specific industry niche. Creating a blog tailored to your profession of choice, establishing connections with those already in the field and presenting a positive image on the internet can help you land a job in your field once you graduate. After you’ve landed your job and settled in, continuing to blog effectively can help you continue to network more effectively and rise through the professional ranks quicker.

Blogging for college students is an excellent way to interact with people in the career field they have chosen. It gives college students a chance to show what skills and knowledge they bring to the table in the career they have been studying. If college students are too busy to run their own blogs they can always guest blog and hence they don’t have to administer a blog. Happy blogging!

  10. Definitely a good idea. As long as your blog is not all about your personal life, which contains information you wouldn’t want prospective employers to see! A lot of college students make websites for themselves, with an online resume and other relevant information that can help them out professionally. Having a blog that shows you’re a competent writer can be a real asset, especially in a day and age when short-hand and “u r 2cool” is frequently used online!

  11. Interesting thoughts. Especially the last part wherein you have discussed how blogging can help students after they leave college in their profession. Nice way to look at things.

  17. I think it helps build your profile or “brand,” if you will. Any kind of success after college depends on marketing yourself in a number of ways. One way to do that is to get the word out about yourself and about what you know and do. Blogging is a perfect way to do that because you can illustrate your credibility, knowledge, and skills.

Blogging can help anyone who wants to succeed in it. Great benefits can come out of it as well.

And after you have graduated college and have a decent blog up, this can help sustain you till you find the job you are looking for.

  24. Its not just about having a blog, but regularly updating it and posting content relevant to your line of profession. This will go a long way in establishing contacts with potential employers. you could also build up your own network and be able to eventually make money from the blogs, hence you will not need any employment.
