This morning, I noticed Mary Jaksch’s interview with Seth Godin.

At first glance when I saw the big name in the title I thought ok, here’s another lame interview by some blogger and a big name author.

I thought, “let me scan through this article quickly and go on to the next important thing to do on my list.”

Well, I tried to do that.

The problem is, I got stuck on this line and, I will probably never forget it:

All you need to make a living is for four thousand to adore you. And you need forty thousand to be a hit. That’s forty thousand out of four billion! Those are really good odds!

Think about what Seth is saying here.

I never really thought about it like this before but what he is saying could not be more true:
  • We are all sharing the same finite space on this planet with each other.
  • We all have more in common with more people than we could ever imagine.

It was like a light bulb turned on in my head, like “ding”.

I’ve been doing it all wrong.

This whole time I’ve been trying to SELL people and CONVERT leads into new sales.

Instead I should have been LOOKING for like minded people that already agree with me who can be found EVERYWHERE.

They don’t need to be sold, they just need to be TOLD.

Talk about an “ah ha” moment.

This changes everything but it actually makes a lot of sense.  You can see proof of this in the world of politics.

Isn’t this where people just naturally come together and rally around an agreed set of ideas?

Whatever your political persuasion it’s exactly what you see people doing we just witnessed a year long showcase in 2012.

People show up to this rally or that rally because for whatever reason the message resonates with them and they become motivated to take action.  The next thing you know they have a bumper sticker on their car, a button on their shirt, and they’re volunteering

at fundraisers and the works.

Meanwhile the politician sits back and benefits from their efforts while maybe reading a new speech every now and then.

Cold, callous, and calculated? Yes.  Effective?  Also yes.

However, it’s not only the politicians that are using this technique effectively.

You’ll notice the same type of behavior with the pop music stars, especially the teen entertainers like Justin Beiber who can’t even go to the mall without thousands of young people showing up like occupy wall street and taking over the building.

Thanks to Seth it makes perfect sense why this is happening.

People like Justin Bieber have made it to a level where they’re waaaaaay’ beyond a hit.  Seth says you only need 40,000 to be a hit.  Who knows how many MILLION “Beliebers” or Justin Bieber fans there are in the world?

How many of his fans KNOW that Justin Bieber got started by uploading a video of himself singing a song on YouTube? Seriously.

  1. February 2008 Justin Bieber uploads a video of himself singing a Chris Brown song.
  2. Later that year, in 2008 he was noticed by a talent manager who signed him right away.
  3. He was later introduced to award winning entertainer Usher Raymond who signed him to his music label.
  4. He goes on a promotional tour in 2009 and teenage girls start going crazy and losing their minds.
  5. Then he released his first album My World 2.0 in 2010. It sold over 10 million albums.  WOW.

The moral to the story:

Believe in yourself and that others will too.  This is the point that Seth made and Justin proved.

If you ever get a chance watch Justin’s very first YouTube video so you can observe his body language and see how humble his mannerisms are.

It’s clear he was just a young kid trying his best to make it.  He had faith that maybe, just maybe somebody out there might notice.

Well, at this point we can safely say, he was right.

So, if you’re out there reading this and you want to know what to do.

  • You may have big dreams of success.
  • You probably want to accomplish something great.

Just remember Justin and Seth.

Believe in yourself and take action like the odds are in your favor.

You may be shocked by what happens.
