Dog hotel in America
Breakfast with giraffes? Check. Sleeping in heated glass capsules with the northern lights roaming above you? Done. Sleeping inside the world’s biggest beagle? Hotels have been doing everything possible to become the reason to go on vacation rather than just another place to spend the night. Take a look at 7 of the world’s most unusual and unique hotels.

Madrid Puerta America. Madrid, Spain

Hotel Puerta America Madrid
When I stepped out of the elevator on the seventh floor of the Puerta America Hotel in Madrid and saw there was a professional photoshooting with Japanese models surrounded by walls that could have come straight out of a Stanley Kubrick movie set, I knew I was in for a treat. I stayed in a room that looked like Michael Jackson’s Scream video set and had magnificent views of the city. Every floor in the futuristic hotel has a different design and no room is the same. When you arrive you are prompted to choose the room you’d like to stay in and you are also given the choice of changing rooms so that you get a glimpse of each work of art.

Karosta Prison. Liepaja, Latvia

Karosta, Latvia
This former soviet prison has been called “hell on earth” and is said to be one of the places with the most paranormal activity in the world, as witnessed by the cast of ghosthunters international. The prison offers guided tours but if you really want to experience what all the fuss is about, you should stay in the prison for a night.

Igloo Village. Kakslauttanen, Finland

Igloo Hotel Finland
Who would have thought I would want to book a flight to Kakslauttanen in Finland? I did know I’d want to witness the northern lights but there were a couple of things holding me back: a) The uncertainty of actually being able to see them and b) the freezing temperatures I’d have to endure. The Igloo Village in Finland does not guarantee that you will see the northern lights but staying in their glass dome bedrooms with vernal temperatures of 20 degrees celsius and upwards and being able to gaze at the sky is already an experience in and of itself. Getting a glimpse of the elusive aurora borealis would enhance that experience but it wouldn’t depend upon it.

Dog Bark
Park Inn. Cottonwood, USA

Dog Hotel
And you thought you’d seen it all. How about sleeping inside a giant Beagle? The owners of this unique b&b in Cottonwood show their love for our four-legged friends by creating one of the biggest beagles in the world. Besides, all rooms are decorated with a canine theme and even have tail-wagging literature available.

The V8 Hotel. Stuttgart, Germany

Automobile hotel in Germany
Think Automobile Museum turned Bed & Breakfast. Here you’ll be able to sleep inside carefully “refurnished” classics, such as the Volkswagen Beetle. Being home to one of the most renowned car makers in the world, Mercedes Benz, Stuttgart is the perfect place for a place like this. Of all Stuttgart hotels, the V8 pays hommage to its city like no other hotel does.

Giraffe Manor. Nairobi, Kenya

A luxurious manor in the middle of Kenya built in 1932 has now become one of the world’s most unique places to stay. But it isn’t its wonderful facade or amazing location what make it famous. At this “hotel”, you might be interrupted by friendly giraffes while having breakfast in the dining room. It is common for the cute animals to peek inside and try and get your breakfast (as long as it isn’t bacon & ham).

Propeller Island. Berlin, Germany

Art hotel Berlin
I have not yet been to this hotel but, boy, is it on my list! This truly weird hotel publicly acknowledges the reign of image over comfort for many of their rooms. Whereas they do have very comfortable and more mainstream rooms, such as the orange room, many of the rooms are literally a work of art for you to sleep in. Thus you’ll be able to sleep upside down in a bedroom that creates the illusion by having all furniture, including bed, hanging from the ceiling!

I do not have any affiliation to any of these hotels. If you enjoyed this post, however, you can take a look at these Stuttgart hotels.

Rod, these are absolutely wild hotels you’ve uncovered! How in the heck do you find such weird (and wonderful) places to stay?

I’d imagine these places don’t get as much business as a well known 5-star, but I’d be interested in knowing if any of them break $1mm in profit/year!

  4. HI,

Well, Dave, I do work in the travel industry :) These are just some weird and crazy hotels… there are many more! Most of them actually don’t cost as much as your regular 4-star hotel and offer similar services, plus you experience something unique. My next two stops are Berlin and Kakslauttanen! :D

  9. These all look like great hotels. They are all unique and one of a kind.

Another really neat hotel is the IceHotel in Sweden. The entire hotel is made out of ice and they remake the entire hotel every year. They say it takes 10,000 ton’s of ice and 30,000 tons of snow.

I don’t think I’d like to stay in any of them apart from the one in Nairobi. The igloo village looks all right too, but I’m guessing it’ll be a bit cold. There doesn’t seem to be much insulation against the elements. The dog hotel looks like a DIY disaster waiting to happen. :-) The front area that hosts the mouth part of the dog looks quite unstable.

I visited Alcatraz once, and now you’ve provided a way to actually sleep in a prison for a night. What a concept! thanks.

  13. I would love to sleep in that bed on the ceiling, although I think a pretty sophisticated German made harness might be necessary!

  15. Hi,
I think I would like to stay in the giraffe hotel. I would have nightmares staying in the prison. There is one hotel that is all ice. Also, the hotel in Fiji that is over the water and has glass bottom rooms. I am not exactly sure where it is but you should add it to your list.
    Thanks,
    Jim

Scott, the ice hotel ini Sweden is indeed great. they have Ice Hotels in Canada, Switzerland, Germany and Andorra, as well. :)

Anne, the glass igloos are completely insulated and the temperatures oscillate between 19 and 22 degrees Celsius (for you Fahrenheiters out there, that’s warm and cozy!).

And, Craig, that “upside-down” room has beds hanging from the ceiling but the “real” beds will allow you to sleep normally. :D

  20. If i have to chose one of them, i’d chose the old prison! very spooky! hahaha

  21. Sue Reddel says:

Nice list of some very different and interesting hotels. It’s always more fun to stay somewhere non-traditional. We often choose hotels that are unique to a destination. You meet terrific people and have great stories (and photos) to bring back.

  22. I’m going to Finland pretty soon. Gotto catch a glimpse of the Igloo Village! Hmm, got to brave the temperatures there though.

  24. The Giraffe Manor. Nairobi, Kenya is just one of its kind in the world, with many animals in the wilderness, such an animal will just make that breakfast of yours a superb while you are staying it Giraffe Manor. Nairobi, Kenya. Its just in the city way from the other dangerous animals as well. Nice work Rodperezto Two thumbs up. Just as Susiep says she needs to go to the Igloo Village this is also one aspect where people with passion need to fulfill it.

My mom would appreciate that hotel of a beagle. What people can create is an amazing gift. I would never think or have enough guts to have an idea such as that one and put it into action let alone make money off of it as a sustainable business model. Well done!
