Can You Become An Affiliate Marketer?

During the process, I have gained some success, learn the process, loss money and failed the business. But I refuse to give up. I stayed on and worked my bud off. I continue to look for better ways to make things happen. I can only say you will learn a lot when you want to build something without resources. By now you should be well aware how affiliate marketing works. But do you have what it takes to become an affiliate marketer? To get started with the business, you need to accept that affiliate marketing is a legit business. You also need to make certain commitment when you are running your online business.

Too many people become an affiliate marketer with the idea that they can make money online free or with little effort. You just need to refer prospects to the affiliate link. Simple isn’t it?

But is it really so?

This is one of the heaviest commitments you need to make when you become an affiliate marketer. Let’s just ignore the initial setup cost because you can still promote the business with

  1. Free blogging platform
  2. Post your product review (research from Google) and affiliate link in your blog
  3. Publish some supporting articles
  4. Create and promote your own video with Animoto
  5. Publish free press release
  6. and etc.

But to really get your site being seen? That’s where you need to pump in the money.

Because when you are using the free methods, you are very limited to what you can do. Let’s take Animoto as an example. Because as a free user, you are limited to a 30 seconds video and the number of words you can put in. The worst part is that the Animoto logo will remain for quite some time when your video end. This is really bad for your own branding.

Even you can live with other company branding in your video, how are you going to compete for prospects view when there are so many videos on the internet? This is where you need hire talent to optimize your video description, submit your video to the video sharing sites and get the URL pinged properly.

So you see, when you become an affiliate marketer, you do need to buffer some budget for your business. But the good news is that there are many affordable channels for you to promote your business. :)

Some people become an affiliate marketer only focus on promoting as much affiliate link as possible. If you want to make money with affiliate marketing with less effort, you should start looking for product which provides upselling offer. It is even better if you can affiliate to product which upsell monthly subscription service.

Upselling works because customers have bought your initial offer and this make it easier for them to buy the upsell when the upsell compliments their initial purchase.

So when you become an affiliate marketer, try to look for product which provide upsell offer. If you are in the make money online niche, you can look for products which offer a cheaper entry price like an ebook and later offer upsell of monthly coaching with the merchant. Your job is to get the customers in and you will enjoy the monthly subscription commission for as long as they are in the training.

By the way, don’t think that upsell is difficult because many times, the merchant will do it for you.

Again, this is the beauty of affiliate marketing. Smile on that. :)

As mentioned before, affiliate marketing is a legit business. When you are in the business, sometime things will get challenging and demoralizing. This is when you need to dig deep down within and haul out your perseverance.

As a businessperson, you need to understand whatever you are going through is merely a process. A necessary process to get you where you want to be.

Sometime, it is hard to go on (especially with your wallet) when you don’t see things moving for your online business. It seems like some power high above just want you to stay in this struggling process…

Let’s look at it this way. If you don’t become an affiliate marketer, where do you think you can get the possibility of running your own business and achieve your financial freedom with affordable budget?

    i was thinking about trying affiliate marketing on my newly relesed website after some research i found that it takes so much hardwork so i dropped the idea as i am an engineering student and i can not afford to give this much amount of time to blogging. but i am happy because i am earning enough wit adsense. btw thanks for this post

    I myself have been trying to make a firm stand in affiliate marketing since 1-2 months,but still haven’t made anything out of affiliate marketing.But i am not going to leave,because i know once i get hold of this thing,my hard work will be worth it :D :)

    Getting a site ranked for at least one keyword that has some good traffic is the most important step. Posting content all day long won’t help unless you can get links that push your site onto the first page. Something that I realized or had to remind myself recently.

      It is hard and competitive, but I think it’s a lot harder and more competitive because people think that “affiliate marketing” necessarily means working in the “make money blogging” niche. There are tons of other affiliate offers that you can work into other niches, so that you can blog about whatever niche you want.

      For example, Amazon affiliates can sell all kinds of stuff. You can find books and other products related to a lot of niches, and make money off those sales. Google Affiliate Network and Commission Junction offer a lot of other opportunities as well. The trick is finding something that jives with what you already love to write about, and then you’ll be able to be successful.

      I have to agree that it is tough to be successful with affiliate marketing. I myself am still learning.

      The point here is just keep going and take action. Of course you need to be flexible to change the plan of things are not working.

      I might have to disagree with that.

      What I personally think about affiliate marketing is to keep an open mind and eyes and ears and other senses.

      Your target marketing don’t just need to be bloggers.

      There are way too many buyers with too many needs out there.

      The challenge is to get to them and make the offers a must have.

    You are so correct. Successful affiliate marketing requires skill and perseverance. It’s the same with any business.

    I have begun several successful enterprises. None of them turned a profit for quite a while. I financially supported them until they did. It would have been easy to quit, had I not had the confidence they would eventually stand on their own.

    It’s hard work, not fun, to see such projects thru. Like affiliate marketing, everything starts with a good plan. Follow the plan, constantly fine tune it, hang on for the ride and you will succeed!

      Is never an easy thing to build a business.

      There will be many hurdles you need to go through. Despite of what others say about affiliate marketing, it is still a legit business which constantly need the investment of hard work and finance.

      Many took the opportunity lightly and thought they can make fast money. But the fact is, that rarely happen. Often, the more desperate one is to make fast money with affiliate marketing, the more one will loss.

    Hey Michael, thanks for a great topic. It really does hit home for me right now. I’ve been dabbling with affiliate marketing for a couple of months now, but as expected, the results have not been as I hoped.

    But I do realize that there are certain steps in promotion and list building that can really help with building a strong client base. So I have a couple of plans in mind for getting the ball rolling a little better.

    Affiliate marketing is hands down the most simple and efficient way for someone who has time on their hands and semi-articulate writing skills to make money on the internet. It’s senseless that it’s often thought of in the same grouping as paid survey sites and get-rich-quick schemes. Internet marketing is as legitimate as any marketing business in the physical world!

    It is amazing at how there are almost no limitations as to who can become an affiliate marketer, but as for people who do well and succeed is a much smaller amount. It takes time, a lot of planning, and a lot of patience. No affiliate marketer starts off at the top, but as long as you stick with it, anybody can make lots of extra money.

    I’ve been an affiliate marketer for over a decade. We (family of 8) don’t live on my income, but it’s a nice subsidy of a few thousand per month.

    The biggest problem I see is that people give up too easily. Being a successful affiliate marketer takes work (real work) and, perhaps more important, willingness to educate yourself on the process.

    Good for helping people understand this.

    If you are just starting out, the amount or non is going to happen from affiliate marketing.
