After having a brainstorming session with the editor-in-chief, Gail from Growmap, we decided that dofollow should be implimented here, with a twist….

Bots don’t get it

My biggest concern with dofollow are the bots that trawl the internet looking for links within comments that have no rel=”nofollow” attributes in them.

This is why I have modified the CommentLuv plugin to only allow dofollow on last blog posts links and then, only if the person making the comment is using a URL that has been registered with ComLuv!

Do you follow?

You will be able to tell if your link is going to be dofollow or not when you start to type your comment..

If you’re commenting with a registered URL, you will see a ‘DoFollow Enabled’ message next to the drop down list of posts.

From now until you get banned!

Only comments qualifying for a DoFollow link made AFTER today will have the attribute removed and the best thing is, if someone abuses the system, I can ban them at source and from thenst onwards, thou mayest not post thine links!!

I think this is a great compromise, dofollow can be useful to attract comments but it’s only useful if it can weed out the spammers. This way, a blog owner wont have to worry about dofollow bots any more because if they spot someone taking the piss then they can report them via the ‘report this comment’ link and I can rip out their heart remove their status from the db and they wont feel the luv on any CommentLuv enabled blog.

All you need is (com)Luv

The new feature is only available to commenters on this blog and on sub-blogs that activate it. The rest of the world will have to wait until it’s finished it’s trial here. What a great excuse to pay a fiver for your own CommentLuv / DoFollow enabled wordpress blog!

You can enable the feature by visiting the CommentLuv settings page and putting a tick in the checkbox..

Give it a try!

Why not visit Gails’ posts and leave a decent comment, if you’re a registered member then your last blog post like will be dofollow. Awesome.

I’m always impressed by how many new ideas you come up with for Comluv. One question, for those of us who use IntenseDebate, will this be enabled for the ID plugin?

intense debate uses a simplified version of the plugin because it has to be done with pure javascript, all this fancyness needs php and maintaing two different version for two different platforms takes too much time for support. Hope you understand..

I am confused – I did a post here and it disappeared. Most odd.

Anyway, still continuing to be impressed by the ideas you come up with for Comluv. Will this be enabled on the IntenseDebate plugin as well?

    Hey,
This is awesome news. I’ve been trying to spread the word to other personal finance bloggers that ComLuv and DoFollow enabled sites are much better for attracting more comments and loyal readers.
This new attribute will help recruit their support.
    Cheers,

Ok, I’m not sure what is dofollow and what is not, as I’m not quite understanding what the article is about. So, I thought I would comment and see if it’s dofollow. I can see other’s comluv blog link as dofollow.

I love commentLuv ever since I saw it for the first time in other people’s blog. This is the driving force to dragg me from blogger platform into wordpress. I quit Blogger because I could not implement commentLuv in my blog. Though provided through IntenseDebate comment system, it is Java based and my friends did not like it.

I haven’t stopped by in a while but it looks like you are making many fun and exciting improvements! An odd thing tho when I was logged into my account it said the “if you are a member of comluv…” text and only showed my last post. But when I logged out to make this comment it showed my last ten posts (with the new dofollow option enabled)

You should check your logged in dashboard profile to make sure the website field is filled the same way as you registered url (that means no www if you didn’t use it for the registration).
I will see about modifying the dashboard profile so it updates the registered url. (they are 2 different db’s)

      dofollow is really no-nofollow.
      does that help? :-)

seriously, it means links you have on the end of your comment will not have the rel=”nofollow” on them which makes them get followed by the search engines.

Hi Andy – I appreciate how you’re always thinking about not only how to make the plugin better, but how to make users’ experiences better, too.

I might be missing the point here so correct me if I’m wrong. This new feature only applies to comments on ComLuv.com and those made on blogs hosted at ComLuv? I’m asking because I thought the plugin already fixed the nofollow problem with comments on self-hosted blogs. Is that right? Thanks for bearing with me here.

Word up! I registered this morning after seeing the commentluv plugin used on a blog – great concept/idea. I think the plugin with or without nofollow will spark more comments, hopefully they are constructive and not a whole bunch of “great”, “nice post”, “amen” type of comments.

    Thanks again,

    Hi Andy,

While I appreciate your decision to let your registered members gain a dofollow backlink via CommentLuv comments here, I must let you know that I arrived at this post via Google ‘for all wrong reasons’!

Let me elaborate. I have been using CommentLuv plugin on my tech blog (TechChunks.com) since a very long time now and recently I had to upgrade the plugin to let it stay compatible with WordPress 3.0

However, today while checking the nofollow status of the comment links on my site (TechChunks.com) I came to know that the CommentLuv enabled links that were left AFTER the plugin upgrade have turned DoFollow! As far as I remember, these links were NoFollow in the earlier plugin versions [and even I have verified this by revisiting the old comments and the links there are still NoFollow].

On my site, I prefer letting the CommentLuv links stay NoFollowed and thus it came as a surprise to me. Could you please help me turn these back to NoFollow as they were earlier?

    I appreciate your help.
