comment success

Being a newbie is one of the worst fears every blogger can face. I began blogging almost a year back and I remember with shudders the idea of writing blog posts. But, the worst fear was whether the target audience actually got to read my blog. I am sure this is what every blogger fears. It is not the financial impact that worries most of us bloggers during those initial days. During this period, I realized that placing well-targeted comments on relevant blogs was one of the best ways to draw traffic to one’s blog. Blog commenting is an art, if not science, and knowing how to comment is just as important as knowing how to blog.

Remember these 5 golden rules about blog commenting, and I am sure you will find success with your blog..

5 Golden Rules about Blog Commenting

  1. Niche Commenting: The old saying “Birds of a feather, flock together” holds true when it comes to blog commenting. So, find blogs in your area of expertise or niche and start reading them, contributing some guest posts if applicable, and of course start adding some zest to the article or post with some useful comments. This will help you target visitors in the blog to check out for more information in your blog. This is one easy way to get targeted traffic to your blog. In my early days, I commented in blogs that had no relevance to medical profession, and I ended up with numerous visitors from other niches. This added only numbers, not relevant customers/audience.
  2. Binge Commenting: “Binge” commenting, like binge drinking, only gives you a bad headache. I mean it! Posting hundreds, if not thousands of comments in a day and relaxing the rest of the month could only cause the search engines to ignore your comments.
They believe that good comments come in a steady and regular fashion. So, comment regularly, and steadily.
  3. Spam Commenting: If not for ethical reasons, stop spamming in your comments for your own sake. It only hurts your blog, your pesona, and you. Posting numerous comments in a single blog in a single day with no intent of adding quality to the post or article amounts to spamming. Also, sending extremely short comments irrelevant to the topic of discussion could get you labeled as “spammer”. Would you want someone else do the same to your blog? Sure, no. Numerous softwares use this tactic but I am not sure how effective they are.
  4. Forum Commenting: Anyone familiar with forums will agree that they are one of the most useful sources of traffic to their blogs. Participation in forums in one’s area of expertise or niche will surely benefit your blog in a big way. So, sign up and keep sharing and you will reap the benefits.
  5. Commenting Contests: Is it something new? It isn’t, but it sure is making waves across the blogosphere. This contest itself is witness to it. Numerous blogs conduct various contests to draw comments and of course visitors that soon become interested in the blog. I am sure the winners remember this blog for a long time to come. I am not surprised with the number of comments many of these contests draw. These contests draw a wider audience than your own niche, but they sure can be refined to narrow the audience.

Finally, comments placed anywhere in the blogosphere is sure to retain the mark of the commenter. Newer ways are being utilized to make the links more tempting – ComLuv, @Twitter, and more. Who knows what comments would entail in the days to come.

I am sure there must be some queries about my experience, my journey into blogging, and more. Be sure to leave a comment. I will respect the same with an appropriate answer. Remember, the link love you get!

Good Article! Apart from redirecting traffic to your website through the backlinks, another aim of blog commenting is to build your brand value and project yourself as an expert in the field that the blog post is talking about. More people are likely to click on your backlink if they respect your expertise.

    Hi Dr. Lawrence,

Excellent post. These are all very important and useful points for bloggers to take on board if they’re not implementing them already.

Just to expand a little on what you’ve covered here, it’s absolutely essential to approach blogging, commenting and traffic with the correct mindset. You don’t want to be overly concerned with traffic, statistics, numbers, etc. Of course these are all important things to bear in mind, but above all you need to keep one thing at the forefront of your mind – people.

You need to write for people, engage with people, contribute value to people, help people. It should always all be about people, not just ‘traffic’. So you need to go where the people are in your niche, engage them and be seen as someone who actually has an interest in them as people and not just as a number or part of a statistic.

Something I notice a lot of bloggers fail to do is to reply to people’s posts on their blogs. When someone is good enough to take the time to leave a comment on your blog it’s common courtesy to reply and it demonstrates that you appreciate them and have a genuine interest in them. This, along with good content, is more likely to leave an impression and influence them to return.

Of course we all want to increase traffic, subscribers, customers, profits and so on. But it’s how we go about it that’s the important thing. Rather than focusing on the end goals we should focus on the people that can help us to achieve them. We should strive to provide them with a good, valuable experience in whatever we do and if this all done correctly then all the other things should largely look after themselves and fall into place.

Thanks for sharing your excellent post, Dr. Lawrence. :-)

    Kind regards,
    Glenn

  4. it’s not natural for a blog to gain a 1000 links in a couple of days so of course Binge Commenting doesn’t work and will only resulting in penalizing your blog,
but i don’t think forums works either, most forums won’t allow you to post a link in your comment, they only allow a link or two in the signature, so you have to have different accounts for every link and comment on 30 posts before you’re allowed to even have a signature in a forum.
just keep it real, comment on things that really pick your interests, socialize and make friends on those blogs, your friends will eventually link back to you.

Good stuff Dr. Lawrence. One of the biggest challenges I have is not being spammy. It would be easy to say \”Yes, and check out my wigits at dub dub dub dot whatever\” but offering good and useful and skillful comments to the discussion is sometimes a challenge. What I offer to the discussion here is this: I have many blogs on my Feedly and when they come up and I feel I can add something useful then I will comment. Fortunately I have many websites in different niches so my blogs or sites do not get slammed with too many linkbacks each day.

  14. Great post, I really mean that! You gave me the information I wanted without going on and on like some writers which I really appreciate.

I notice that people tend to comment more on the posts that have comments. This got me thinking its kinda like most people don’t want to be the first on the dance floor but as soon as a few people get out there the dance floor starts to fill up.

This has been a helpful read. I’ve only started to dab into niche blog/forum commenting and all I can say is that I’ve gotten a very positive response, especially from niche forums. I’m having a good time commenting on these forums since I can not only write about my expertise but also build trust with my niche market. I’m loving it!

    Hey Lawrence,
Really very informative article. I truly agree with you that blog commenting is an art . When I was a newbie I got no shares and comment. I was not able to pay $10 every month for hosting due to financial problems at home. Then I thought of shutting down my blog. But then my friend gave me a correct advise to start giving values to other blogs and you will get some in return. I wondered how it could be possible. But slowly and slowly delivering quality comments increased my ROI. Hence, today my blog is successful just due to proper blog commenting.
Thanks Lawrence for sharing this ultimate tips with us.

    Stay Blessed, happy blogging :)
One should not spam, try to deliver relevant comments.
