Yahoo! AnswersThere are several ways to increase your exposure and credibility on the internet. Participating at Yahoo! Answers is one of the latest addition.

The Yahoo! Answers community encourages you to ask or answer a question about specific topics. There is even an interactive component where members vote for best answers. Another way to further boost your profile within the community!

Yahoo! Answers is worth your time to investigate. This strategy will not increase your link popularity as Yahoo! Answers incorporates a “nofollow” tag. It is, however, a simple way to spread word-of-mouth buzz.

Benefits of Participating in Yahoo! Answers

  • Increased credibility, especially if you receive “best answer” ratings.
  • Targeted visitors to a relevant page on your site. (You can include your URL in your response.)
  • Your answer’s possible inclusion in Search Engine search results.
  • Exposure to your e-zine subscription form or blog.
  • Ideas for new topical pages for your own website. I find this very useful to build your own content pages based on keywords people are searching.  One example, I found some buzz about auto blogging. I answered it but at the same time I decided to create a content page about auto blogging software for my own website here with adsense and affiliate products. Moreover, when ever I find a similar question, I link this page and get a decent targeted traffic.

Process for Answering a Question

1) Sign up for a Yahoo! account.

You need points to ask questions. Upon signing up, you receive 100 points. Each answer you provide earns more points.

2) Click here to begin a focused search.

This method will help you identify open (or unanswered) questions related to your theme quickly, saving you lots of time and frustration!

3) Fill in the relevant Keyword, make the appropriate category selections (be sure to select Open under Question Status) and then click on the Submit button.

4) From the results selection, click on the question you wish to answer.

5) This brings you to an overview of the question. Click on Answer this Question button.

6) Enter your answer in the Your Answer box. Add your link to the Know your source. List it here: field, if you wish. Or you can include your URL within your actual answer. Preview and then submit.

Tips for Yahoo! Answers

  • Provide quality answers. As always, keep it real.
  • Use links to your site judiciously. If you have a page that gives additional relevant information, add a link.
  • Stay focused on building content for your own website. That’s where you will
get the biggest Return on Investment.
  • Type longer answers, make them personal and include links to my website in the body of my post. I do still cut and paste to save time, but I also add a little fluff to each answer. Sometimes I will include links to more than one page of my site.
  • Do a quick Google search to find additional info that will help the questioner. Only add 1 or 2 additional links so that it doesn’t take people away from visiting your site.
  • Figure out the busiest times for your sections and answer questions during those periods so your answers appear near the top.
  • Answer questions that very few people answer. Sometimes I will just do a quick Google search that the person could have done themselves and post the link. This results in being selected as “best answer.”
  • I experimented with making my posts more personal by adding statements like “best wishes” or “good luck” or “hope that helps” to the end of my posts. I think that also increases best-answer ratings.
  • I am pretty aggressive about getting my link in the body of each post. Every time I answer a question, I think of a page I have that is somehow related, even if it is a stretch. I will answer the person’s question, and then steer the conversation to some helpful information they can find on my website.
  • Avoid spamming (“Identify yourself” as a website business owner; don’t link to “purchase pages”; and don’t put links in “all” of your answers).
  • Use links to your site to “broaden horizons,” rather than to complete your answers.
  • Don’t bother with “non-serious” questions.
  • Answer questions early; vote for your answers late.
  • I have had many “thank you’s” when the information is helpful to the asker and not spam.

After spending quite sometime on Yahoo! Answers (the section I participate in is very busy and has quite a few regulars), I noticed an orange button under my name saying “Top Contributor” (meaning someone who is an expert or extremely knowledgeable in a field). The benefit of this is that my avatar stands out among the others answering questions so people pay particular attention to it and hopefully follow more of my links.

Yahoo! Answers is a lot of work, but it pays off (in terms of traffic and AdSense income) for me. It is also fun helping people out. Some of the answers there are good for a laugh!  J

As an aside, participating at Yahoo! Answers has also helped me identify sections/topics I can add to my site that will bring in more traffic.

A tip inside a tip:

Even though Yahoo! Answers requires you to be at Level 2 (with over 249 points) in order to get “live” links in your answers, you can leave links and as soon as you hit Level 2, they automatically are converted to live ones.

One final piece of advice…

Building a business is all about balance. Building buzz is no different. Don’t fall into the trap of building content for others and forget about your own site in search of links. Find your own balance as you build traffic. You need both content and links. Without content, you don’t need links. :-)

I hope you enjoy this post on how to get more traffic from Yahoo! Answers.
