3 Ways Facebook Ads Help With Exposure

When your advertising budget is tight, Facebook ads may just be the little boost you need

Not too long ago I was talking to a new client about integrating Facebook ads into his marketing strategy. I was mentioning to him the different ways I had used them and how they worked to help me get more exposure and likes for my new page. The questions he asked me made me realize that while I knew a lot about Facebook ads from my own social media marketing experience, I really didn’t have any other frame of reference.

That was when the research started. What I learned really helped me understand that despite a lot of naysayers and social network punditry, Facebook ads could be very effective if you take the time to really learn how to use them.

Knowing the Types of Facebook Ads

Utilizing Facebook advertising is a lot like ‘seeding’ clouds to produce rain. Basically, you’re adding that little something to the cloud that will produce rain or in this case, likes, shares, downloads or all of the above. To accomplish this you have to choose which vehicle is right for you. Here are the basic types of Facebook ads:

  • Post Ad – A particular post made on your Facebook page becomes an ad that your targeted audience sees.  One way I’ve used a post ad is to get targeted users to check out one of my e-books. When I created the ad, I just pointed it to this particular post I created.
  • Social Ad – Have you seen some ads that showed the names of your friends who liked that page? That’s known as a Social Facebook ad. It integrates social cues to encourage people to like a page or try an app.
  • Sponsored Story – This is one of the most underused but effective Facebook advertising vehicles because this ad is generated by user interaction. and research shows that it’s pretty effective for some
  • Web Ad – This is an ad that drives people to an off-Facebook site, like your e-commerce site, blog, etc., using objects created within Facebook like your page or an application.

So which Facebook ad is the best one?

Which Facebook ad has better results?

Now that you have some idea of what the basic types of ads are, it’s natural to form an opinion about which ones would yield better results. But let’s look at some research results first.

Two metrics marketers use in judging ad effectiveness are Click-Through-Rates (CTR) and Cost-per-Click (CPC). CTRs tell advertisers what percentage of your audience clicked the ad while CPC tells you how much you pay for each click. The ultimate objective is to find that ideal Facebook ad mix that has a high CTR (average CTR is about 0.07%) and low CPC  because not only do you spend less money but you are getting the exposure you need. Finding that perfect mix takes trial and error and it’s usually a good idea to try more than one ad vehicle in the beginning so that you can learn which works best.

Having said that, some research shows that Post Ads and Sponsored Stories have that desirable combination of high CTR and low CPC. In fact the CPC for both vehicles was shown to be less than $0.50 while the CTR is 0.07% (the overall average) or higher.

How Facebook ads can help you get better organic exposure

One of the more prominent buzzwords in social media marketing is “organic.” The simplified definition is that users or fans pass along your page or its contents to their friends. The key here is that these users must be properly targeted. So when were talking about getting more organic exposure through Facebook ads, here’s what that means:

  1. More impact – Targeted audiences are often more aware of these ads and are even able to better recall them.
  2. Better absorption – Because Facebook ads are more frequent their message was better absorbed by their target audience.
  3. Brand advocacy – In traditional advertising, word of mouth is the most sought-after form of advertising. The social media equivalent is called brand advocacy. As I mentioned before, when fans like a post or page, that activity shows up in their news-feed. Liking and sharing a page, post or app is the equivalent of brand endorsement which makes that fan a brand advocate.

While there is still so much to learn about Facebook ads, it’s good to remember that it takes time to learn which ads work best for you.

So if you’ve ever used Facebook ads, tell us what you learned from the experience.

A lot of small business maybe think that facebook is not a valid form of advertising for them because they are B2B rather than B2C. This can be seen clearly by the quality of their own pages on facebook, many MDs thinking that social media is perhaps the biggest form of productivity killer. Even small business can benefit from social media with a little know how.

You’re right and I think it stems from ignorance and not having the time or even desire to try something new. One thing I do know is that traditional advertising has been disrupted and if Facebook has a say, it may be disrupted even more. Thanks for the comment, Chloe!

Like everybody knows, social media like Facebook is a way to exposure or get traffic to our small business. However, I have a problem, that is, as a small business, the human resources are limited, we don’t have enough time to create unique and useful content for our social media pages like our Facebook pages, especially when we want to exposure our small business with more social networks. Then what should we do so that we can make full use of social networks while with limited human resources?

I partner with businesses, research content, post it to the social networks, interact with fans/followers, analyze data and activity, work on marketing strategies…That does mean an investment but it’s an extra pair of hands that will help you stay relevant and present. Given that Google is no longer a viable source of traffic with its constant algo changes, perhaps Facebook Ads is the way to go. I have not tried it before but I very much tempted to for it. I have heard good results can be obtained from it specially if the right demographics are targeted.

The constant algo changes are tough to keep track of and Google is beneficial IF you have deep enough pockets and know how to really work Adwords. I am all for giving it a try because you’ll be able to play around with it a little more and I think it’s just more feasible.
Let us know if you do try it and how you feel about it

I dont really think you can compare FB ads with Google ads. Ads on Facebook limit your exposure to a rather small number of people, Google ads open your ads up to a lot of people out there. Besides, I dont think algorithm changes have any affect on Google ads.

Great write-up, FB ads are pretty cheap I must admit!

You’re totally right on the reach. Google does open you up to more people but I wonder if there’s any data on those points like absorption. In any case, there are just some really passionate Google Adwords lovers here some of whom have no love for Facebook ads. I have to say, it’s going to be to see how Facebook will change in the next few years, how the ads will be affected and what Google will (try to) do about it all.

    Hi,
Well, I think Facebook has really gained a lot of importance among people. I think its the best place to increase your interaction with your visitors. Obviously, the facebook ads depends on the type of advertising you want and also the budget. I like the types of facebook ads that you have shown, specially the social ad and post ads. Thanks for the share!!

      Hi Aditi,
I think Facebook is going to do interesting things as far as their ads so we’ll see what the future holds. You’re right about the kind of advertising. If you’re looking for page or post likes, it’s less expensive and easier to achieve. If you’re looking for an App like then that’s pricier but it could be worth it because of the level of interactivity. App shares are a challenge because you’re asking for an endorsement. The key point is to play around with it and find what works.
      Thanks!

Frankly speaking, For me Facebook ads have never worked. I am back to Google Adwords. With Facebook ads, you can only target those people who are active on it, while Google allows you to target large number of people. The other flaw that I found with Facebook is that they attempt to show your ad on several irrelevant places. It might be working for some, but it just doesn’t work for me.

Hi Alex, FB does have that addiction factor but it also has that interaction factor as well. There are some companies who have used their FB page tab as a help center. Some of the companies I use have a contact page there and they monitor it. So while I agree with you that people go to FB for no apparent reason sometimes, I’ve actually gone to check the company’s page, ask for help and get help. Interactivity, engagement…that’s a BIG factor.

      Hi Bhusan,
You’re right. Google has the volume for sure and I don’t mean to say that FB is better for all. My point is if you’re on a budget and need to cut your teeth on advertising, FB is a good way to start. They can direct people to your site, your app and when someone likes your page, post, app, their friends see it. That whole brand advocacy part is one of the keys. I think Google is good, they have the volume and they’ve been at it longer but FB added those little personal touches that make it unique and worth investigating.

In terms of exposure one of the tricks I keep seeing the advertisers using in the Facebook sidebar ad’s is the “Sexual” nature of ads. Every1 knows sex sells and the advertisers are abusing this. “adult chat” “dating in your area” with some half naked women.

LOL, I have rarely seen adult type ads but one thing I do see is that when I click to remove the ad, they ask me why. So they’re gathering even more data so that they can tailor the advertising and exposure.

One of the key factors of running a successful Facebook ad is the picture.

The picture is what people notice FIRST.

Once the picture grabs their attention. The text should qualify the potential prospect, so that we’re NOT spending money on clicks that don’t produce the desired results.

It also could have something to do with the graphic of a plate of food…but I was really good with the results and that my CPC wound up being less than estimated.

Zoya, yes! It really provides that “social” aspect that had been missing from traditional marketing. They’re looking into understanding that ROI and better defining it but I love what you said: “Facebook presents businesses with the opportunity to reach their target market throughout the entire marketing cycle” So true

Social media has got a great potential in promoting a business. Just like traditional advertisements, social media ads also requires good monitoring and tweaking it out for targeted audience. Choosing the right type of advertisements and employing good copy writing skills will bring more clicks to advertisements.

Exactly! Those writing skills mean a lot and so does the graphic. FB ads are not a strategy in and of themselves. They are a part of an overall strategy. I think when people put a lot of expectations on this one vehicle, THAT’S when we get the disgruntled feelings.

I feal social media has some great opportunities however when I tried Facebook ads they just didn’t seem to pay off but it did give me some great exposure. I would like to hear if anyone has any good techniques that may increase conversion on this type of advertising.

Well, Chad, it looks like it did pay off because, like you said, you did get some great exposure, right. But yes, I’m hoping we’ll get some other tips and experiences from others because I think those who are on the fence, especially, would benefit from the feedback/data

Facebook ads is very to good for branding new products compared to newspaper / billboard ads. People are more likely to remember the ads on Facebook . Concerning post ads, do you think it is the best option ? Is promoting posts on the pages better and can create more exposure?

Hate to sound like a cliche but individual results will vary but I do think they provide you with good quality exposure. Print has been on the decline for a while. It won’t go away completely, it will face significant headwinds in the near and distant future. Regarding post ads vs the others, it depends on what you’re going for. My recent run yielded some likes for my post and my page and had a strong click through for minimal cost. Sponsored ads are underutilized so you may have good results there. It depends on what you’re trying to do and how you target it.
Let us know if you have any results to share

There is also a free way to get a great exposure on facebook. Just create a quiz. My friend created a fun quiz on FB and got 2,2mil likes. I think that’s great. I’ve used ads on facebook but it didn’t help me much.

That is true but if you want to give your post a little push, ads may be a good option. Posts get pushed down and there’s no guarantee that you’ll get the eyeballs you need. Thanks!

That is a great question, Apna. Do you have access to Paypal? They are a great way to pay for your ads if you don’t have a credit card available. You may also be able to get a co-branded debit card from Paypal as well, if you choose or you can just use them directly. Let me know if that helps!

With FB you can target geographically down to zip code, by broad or specific interests, marital status… So it is similar to Google but with social context. If you do try, we’d love to hear what you think.

Facebook can be beneficial for some sites. If we have targeted audience. Today most of the younsters are on Facebook so stuff related to them can get more revenue than for aged people.

Stella, you’re right about Facebook ads not being for everybody. But don’t discard the “aged” people because while the young’uns are on Facebook, the older crowd has some money to spend. You just have to find the target that’s right for you and with these ads you can choose age range. Thanks!

Facebook ads, I think, are designed to be easy. Unfortunately, I think the misunderstanding comes from FB being unable to describe it properly. There is a lot more to it but if I can shed a little light on them and how they work, I will. Thanks Andy

I’ve had very missed results with Facebook ads – found them great for getting likes to my Facebook pages, but not so good for traffic and sales to my stores. But getting likes is a good place to start in marketing on Facebook too. I do need to experiment more with their targeting and see if I can boost my results and am planning a holiday promotion.

      Hi Lori,
They haven’t been able to correlate the ads with actual sales in a way that a lot of people would like but the fact that you’re getting likes says to me that you’re getting that exposure base that could lead to sales. Like you said, it will take time but once you understand how it works for you, you can use it more. Good luck with the holiday promotion. Would love to hear your results!

    Amar KanwalOctober 14, 2012 - 3:00 pm

I like the article. My prospects are lets say you own a page 100,000 people on it you would use the paid exposure service on Facebook and market out to friends of friends getting you closer to the friend of friend ratio you had in your statistics section. That method holds ground for specific target points but, lets say i was a small business operating under name of Amar Kanwal.

I needed 1 Million facebook fans. it would not be profitable to me or page owner if they start ground up because they are only getting a percentage of exposure. lets say if it was 10 people on a page you would target 200 people. If you waited till your page hit the 10k mark, you would be targeting 20k people for near the price.

Exactly, not everyone can expect to have a page and just get 1K, 10K or even 20K just with the snap of the fingers. If you precisely target your advertising, you can expect good exposure for little cost. Thanks Amar!

Very good topic Dixon. In fact it couldn’t of come at a better time. I’ve been looking into using Facebook as a way to advertise, but wasn’t quite sure how to go about it. By reading the information available on their advertising set-up page you don’t get much explanation of how it works. This has been very helpful, Thank You.

Considering the usage of the social networks, particularly, Facebook, it gifts back super exposure to your website, as you have also said so. I’m an addictive user of Facebook, though, I wasn’t aware of the types of Ads you’ve mentioned. Secondly, there you what receive targeted audience, surely, a green signal for your website.

facebook ads are cheap plus they are good at targeting people of particular age groups ( in my view more related to fashion or food websites are most popular)as for the others people might visit once but dont generally come back if there is a no quality information. every type of advertising works and afterall its facebook so yeah great article on exposure !:)
