Content Delivery Network-CDN

What is CDN?

A lot of talks are there around the internet about this CDN thing. I will give you some insights into what this CDN is and why do you need it for better performance of your blog. CDN stands for Content Delivery Network or Content Distribution Network. As the name suggests, CDN is responsible for delivery or distribution of your content to your visitor’s server. But the main feature of CDN is that it delivers your content in a real fast time by decreasing the load time of your blog significantly. Here is exactly what happens when you use CDN:

  1. Content Delivery Network consists of servers all around the globe. So when you integrate with CDN, your content gets copied on all the servers. So when a visitor tries to access your blog or website, content is delivered to him each time from the nearest server geographically instead of your hosting server. This makes your blog load in a faster time. This improves your blog’s performance to a large extent. I will explain it how in a while.
  2. Next, CDN will host all your static files like images, javasript, CSS, mp3, PDF or video files. Though all the dynamic content is hosted on your sever only. This reduces the load on your server and saves your bandwidth resulting in faster loading of your blog pages.
  3. You might not see much difference from your server to your website but your international visitors will get to read your blog in really fast time. You can use Pingdom Tools to notice your blog loading time before and after using the CDN.

Why is Load-Time Important?

This was the power of CDN. Before I go into the benefits provided by CDN, let’s take a look at why the loading time

is so important for your blog.

  • Your blog’s loading time plays a crucial role in the search engine rankings. Search engines give more preference to blogs which load faster. Thus if your blog loads faster, you will definitely rank higher in the search engines.
  • Generally visitors bounce back from your blog if your blog takes a lot of time to load which increases the bounce rate of your site. A visitor missed is a customer missed. Hence you are losing out on sales and profits due to slower blog.
  • On the other hand if your blog loads really fast, then your visitors will spend more time on your blog and you will get full chances to promote your blog’s contents to them. Hence your conversion rates increase manifolds if your blog loads faster.

Benefits of CDN

Hence to count on some of the most crucial benefits of the CDN:

  • Faster loading time and increased customer/client satisfaction.
  • Adds to the SEO score of your blog.
  • Higher search engine rankings.
  • Increased conversion rates, sales and profits.
  • Better handling of traffic to your site. Less chances of your server crashing due to excess traffic.
  • Easy integration with wordpress.

The only disadvantage I see with the CDNs is that they are not free. Well every good thing comes with a price. To name some of the best CDNs, there is MaxCDN, VPS.net, Amazon Cloudfront and many more. MaxCDN is considered the best and the most cost-efficient CDN nowadays. In fact I integrated my blog with MaxCDN two weeks ago and the effects have been amazing so far. My blog now loads faster.

So this was all about CDN. If you are already using one, you will be well aware of these benefits. If you do not use one, then its time you start now. Do let me know what are your plans? Which CDN are you using?
