Being a parent is one of the biggest responsibilities an individual can encounter throughout his or her life. A proper way of raising a child doesn’t just include feeding it, clothing it and keeping it warm, it should also include working on his or her personality. Many young parents let their children be brought up by teachers, friends and circumstances, which is not the right thing to do, because you should be the first to teach your child some important life lessons that will be helpful later in life, when he or she starts facing the real world. Here are some of the things that every parent should try and incorporate into the child’s mind.

The right values

We live in a world with mixed up values. It would be quite beneficial to try and teach your child which are the right ones. Explain to him or her that they shouldn’t see people through the color of the skin and social status, that there are more important things that should be taken into consideration when evaluating a person, like kindness and empathy. I know that this may sound like a cliché, but it shouldn’t be neglected. Teach them that brands and logos are just words and pictures and that they shouldn’t have a big influence on their taste for clothes and other items. Make them understand that happiness isn’t about how much money you have or what kind of car you drive, but about doing what you like and having good relations with people that surround you.

Passion for the written word

Having your child embrace reading as a form of entertainment can be beneficial in many ways. Books are a great source of inspiration. Kids can learn a lot when reading about other people’s experiences and fantasy novels can enrich their imagination, while every book they read will leave a positive trace on their use of vocabulary and also improve their memory. Reading is also beneficial for the development of creative thinking which may help when a person is faced with some kind of an obstacle in life.

Love for the Nature

Teach your children about the importance of Mother Nature, and have them realize the beauty of all living things. Take them hiking, mountain climbing, introduce them to the wildlife surrounding the place where you live. Make them aware that they are also part of the Nature and that they have to take care of the environment, since we all know that human beings are the only creatures on the planet that have the power to destroy it, as well as preserve it. Try and make them understand that the actions of every individual count, and that is up to them to decide the future of our planet and the generations to come.

The true value of good health

Try to explain to your children that preserving good health is one of the most important things a person should strive for in life, because if you are in perfect health, there is nothing beyond your reach, and if you lose your health, the only thing you can do is try to get it back. Explain to them the importance of eating healthy, and that their body is a vehicle transporting their brain, so they should keep it in a good shape and fill it with appropriate fuel. Try to inspire the affinity towards sports and exercising, since if you manage doing that and they develop a habit of working out while still young, chances are that they will preserve this habit throughout their whole lives, which will benefit them for various reasons. Have your children understand that doctors are their friends, they are here to help them and that they shouldn’t be afraid of them. Many children are afraid of the doctors, and especially the dentists, so it is your job to explain to them that the dentist is someone who rescues their teeth from dangerous bacteria that are trying to eat them. Find a dentist who is good with the children and has some child friendly accessories in his office – that will definitely ease the tension.

Raising a child is quite hard, but no matter what, we can’t afford to be sloppy about it, since it is our responsibility to make a decent human being out of a little baby, and we should do everything that is in our power to make that happen.
