Even if you hate the destruction mice cause, you may not want to kill them.

In fact, there are several benefits to not killing mice you catch. Firstly, it’s less messy. A traditional snap trap will result in some ugly scenes.

Another reason why humane mouse traps are good is because they tend to be safer than their kill alternatives, especially when you have kids or pets. Even setting a traditional snap trap can be dangerous, which you probably already know all-too-well if you’ve gotten your finger snapped by one.

Some people might say any humane mouse trap that doesn’t kill the mouse just isn’t effective because releasing a mouse means it will come right back in. To that I say, limited thinking abounds.

If you’ve got one mouse, there are plenty more where that one came from fully capable of joining and won’t hesitate to come into your house. What you need to focus on is not the possibility of that one mouse coming back in, but the steps you need to take to ensure the hundreds of others nearby won’t find their way in as well. This includes sealing holes and properly storing food to limit food sources. That is a whole other post though.

This post focuses on what to look for in humane mouse traps so you have an easy, successful mice

control solution.

When Shopping for a Humane Mouse Trap

Here are some things to look for when selecting humane mouse traps

  • Not having to touch the mice to release them: this is an important feature. Mice are gross. They carry some nasty diseases. And a trapped mouse can be a very unpredictable little creature. When shopping for humane catch-and-release mouse traps, make sure the trap is built so you don’t have to touch the critter when you release it.
  • Reusable: there are mice traps designed for short-term use and offer multiple trappings. This is ideal if you don’t find the need to buy an expensive long-term mouse trap or don’t want to deal with the mess involved with cleaning one. Look for a reusable one that catches up to 30 mice before needing to be replaced. This will ensure you’ll get your money’s worth.
  • Safe to Use around Kids and Pets: Even if you don’t have kids or pets, it’s best to get a humane mouse trap safe to use around them. You never know when you have a young visitor or furry friend over for a visit. This will keep you from worrying when you do.
