Keywords Are Still Important
Why do people visit your website? If you can get to the root of that then you’ll have it made. If you have done, or want to delve into keyword research and spend some time learning about it, then you’ll get a lot more traffic to your site. Picking and placement of those crucial keywords is an art form and it needs practice. The more visitors you get to your site, the odds are the more business you’ll be doing with them.

What Function Do Keywords Perform?

Anyone wanting to know about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) doesn’t need to have any advanced training, just good powers of observation and research, plus common sense. Keywords are what we all type into a search engine’s little box to dig up information on something we are interested in. How can an individual, conducting their new home business, find out just what people are looking for? There are ways to find out, plus the best keywords and phrases to use, plus where to find them. Simple tips and tricks are outlined below.

If you are a new Mother and looking for “baby supplies”, say, then you’ll probably type that into a search engine like Google or Yahoo and see what comes up on the first page. See how many pages they have related to that, but don’t faint. You can get your site to rank high on Google. It just takes determination and good keyword research.

SEO Knowledge Benefits

The main goal you must have if you’re a webmaster, is get high up in rankings on Google and other search engines. That’s millions of other people’s goal as well. Get there as quickly as you can, onto the coveted first page, and your earnings will increase. More looks at your site mean more income from sales, or affiliate clicks. Just how Google categorizes your site, means the difference between lots of traffic, or hardly any. By the way, you can get tiny little programs to put on your site that gives you the number of hits you get. Usually, your web design company can provide those, or you will find them in your own program if you’ve designed the site yourself.

Google’s complex algorithm will pick up on how many people click on your site and the more you can attract, the higher your ranking gets. Should you worry about keywords and phrases and related words? Absolutely. Without a set of fresh and ranked keywords you won’t move up to the top or close to the top on Google. And that’s what everyone else is fighting for. Some text has naturally occurring keywords but most does not.

Keywords are to SEO as the human brain is to you. You’ll move up in search engine ranking if you do your homework and update your site frequently with new keywords and unique and interesting text. If you can’t be bothered or let it slide for a while, you’ll wake up ranked at 850th or something worse.

Do Keywords Pop Into Your Brain At Will?

If they pop into your brain then they will have also popped into millions of other brains as well. It’s very competitive out there. Always do your research on anything, and especially keywords, that you put on your site. Make every syllable a gem.

It’s actually quite easy to research keywords. There are plenty of free resources out there. Effort is involved, but great keywords are your bread and butter. Here are three things to keep in mind:

  1. Always use relevant keywords. Do not put teen in there if your site is about babies. You can use newborns or infant or babyhood, for instance. But make it all about what you’re selling.
  2. Any keywords you pick must also rank high in the search engines, or they are a waste of time to use.
  3. Your keywords have to show they can sell that item. If not, then why bother with them?

Great Keywords Born From Research, Bring More Traffic

Try Google’s Keyword Tool. It’s free for anyone to use. There are more complex keyword providing programs out there but they cost money. Stick with Google for a while. Keep your extra cash for expenses until you get the ball rolling with customers. Google will also tell you how relevant a keyword is, plus offer related words and phrases. The latter is wonderful

when you struggle to find a not-too-common alternate word to your keyword. If one keyword is used too often on your site, then Google will start to knock you from the rungs of progress.

Another handy tidbit is to check Google’s Global Monthly Searches. This gives you a feel for how many people worldwide are looking for any particular item or info. You can also get results for a more localized area.

Some highly hittable keywords may be located but don’t jump on them! Too many people have sought out the simple phrase “baby”, so it’ll be way overused as a keyword phrase. If it’s had ten million hits then it’s way too common to use a lot, or as your alternate keyword. The goal here is to locate popular, but less searched keywords.

What’s the perfect amount of global searches per month for a keyword? About ten thousand is wonderful and there will be far less competition. Remember to look through Google’s “related keywords” section. They will also go further with “More Like These” if you click on one.

Research Means More Income

There is still difficulty in researching whether a keyword will make you money. But, if visitors are hitting “your” keyword frequently, then these visitors are likely to buy more products or services, or gleaning knowledge from your offered wisdom.

Choose a keyword you like and test it out. Type the word or phrase into a search engine. Take a look at how many ads are on page one and two. If there’s a lot then that keyword is a likely winner. If it weren’t, people wouldn’t pay for ads to promote their products. Compare a few keywords this way and use those ads for your own advantage.

Type the same keyword in the box on Yahoo’s Overture. This is that company’s advertising arm and sees how much they charge for an ad in that category, i.e., cat supplies. If the ad costs ore than other ads, then that shows it’s a bigger seller. Use the keyword for free on your website and you won’t need an ad.

Go to a site called ClickBank. This site has affiliates and it’s a great site to study. Are there many affiliates selling “baby supplies”, and how many are? Check ClickBank’s Gravity Rating and see how many affiliates are on board for “baby supplies”. If there are plenty, then more than likely cat supplies are a hot commodity.

How To Use Keywords To Your Best Advantage

As you’ve gathered up you little list of researched and well-liked keywords and phrases and related words, don’t use them too much. Google sees too much use of keywords as spam and you’ll plunge in the rankings. If this happens, your traffic will drop. Here are a few guidelines:

  • Put the keyword or phrase in front of your title but keep it natural. A good title could be Baby Supplies For Your Newborn. A bad title might read Baby Supplies — You’ve Gotta Have Lots.
  • Use keywords in both the first and last paragraphs of your text, and in the first and last sentence works best. This way people read your keyword up front and it’s also in the last sentence they read.
  • If you can design it this way, put your keyword in the upper left of every page on your site.
  • Try and use your keyword in your domain name, or if it’s taken already, a domain registry will offer alternatives.
  • Optimum keyword density is 1 or 2 percent. This means that you put it once or twice into every 100 words. Some can be placed within the text as well but alternate phrases or words are better. Google doesn’t enjoy keyword stuffing as they think of it as spam, and will zap you down in rankings quicker than the blink of an eye.

    Anchor Text Is Way Cool

Use your keyword or alternate as a live link instead of the URL address, which is common and ugly looking. People are far more likely to click on an anchor text link rather than the URL. This takes some simple HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) and if it’s the only thing you learn in that, then it’ll be worth it. Go to ezinearticles.com where you’ll find free lessons on this. Once you’ve tested you live link anchor text, simple cut and paste carefully and insert the new keyword or URL also carefully, and you’re good to go.
