carpet cleaning

Carpet Cleaning Steps and Tips:

Before cleaning the carpet it is important to decide what type of carpet and padding materials will be cleaned and what products and equipment are necessary to clean the carpet.

After thoroughly vacuuming particulate soils, it is time to determine whether a preconditioner that suspends and emulsifies soils can be used or whether specialty spot treating is necessary.

If the dirt particles are greasy then a cleaning solvent is needed.  If a cleaning solution to get rid of odor is needed it is best to use a cleaning solvent that has no (or at least very few) volatile organic compounds (VOCs). A non-aerosol cleaning product which has no VOCs can get really get rid of the odors instead of just masking the odor will a heavy fragrance.

If an odor-eliminating product is necessary, use one that is not an aerosol and that has little or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can safely eliminate odors at the source and not simply mask them with a heavy fragrance.

It is best to use dry foam extraction as well as hot water extraction and carpet shampooing  when carpet cleaning. Encapsulation technology, special soil retardants and crystallizing agents in the products that are used guarantees that the soils are removed when dry cleaning a carpet.

Green carpet cleaning doesn’t mean sacrificing a cleaner job for a healthier environment since green cleaning products work just as good (and in some cases better) than traditional cleaning chemical solutions.

How do you clean your carpet?

What measures do you find best when it comes to carpet cleaning? Are there any other tips or suggestions on how to effectively clean areas which are hard to clean?

I would love to hear your comments, questions, ideas, and suggestions about when it comes to carpet cleaning.

  1. My carpets need to be cleaned. Bad.
You see folks, not every area has earth friendly options. Not every person can choose chemical free cleaning. I want to. I’d choose to do this. How can I? Rent a machine and do it myself, I know. No, I need their suction, their hot, hot water and their experience for doing this. I’ve done the own a Kirby and rent a machine thing…it doesn’t work as well. In my experience. So what’s a green mom to do? I’ll tell you what I wanted to do. What I wanted to say. Would that have really changed her mind? Her business? Her point of view? Nah. Everyday I run into something like this because for many going “green” is a new way of thinking. Besides…

  2. I have found carpet cleaning quite hard whenever I am moving out. Usually, I hire someone to do carpet steam cleaning and they generally do a good job. I will look into your suggestions when choosing an option for carpet cleaning next time. Thank you.

We clean our carpet so often these days (2 young boys) that I often joke that we should not bother vacuuming it any more, just give it a weekly wash. Having Vax is a life saver for us. Simple and effective.

  5. Thank you for sharing, great tip!

”Before cleaning the carpet it is important to decide what type of carpet and padding materials will be cleaned and what products and equipment are necessary to clean the carpet.” I like this…

    Managing Spills and Stains

    1. Act Immediately
    2. Never add moisture to moisture
    3. Don’t rub at a stain
    4. If you wet it, go back to point 2.

Warning: If the wrong chemical is used, the stain could be permanently set.

Thank you for your tips Fred.
Two things I would like to suggest.
    1) Not to use an iron or a hair dryer to dry a carpet stain. This will only seal the stain permanently on the rug or carpet.
    2) When we use a cleaning product, we must read the label and follow the manufacturer’s instruction. It we are not sure we should check the MSDS. (Material Safety Data Sheet)

  7. Great article Fred, sounds like you got the carpet cleaning thing down pat

  8. David Nash says:

One thing to keep in mind is that regular maintenance is also important. You’re writing about steam cleaning or deep cleaning, which needs to be carried out at regular intervals, however just regular vacuuming is really the mainstay of carpet care, as well as immediate stain treatment (Thanks Blue Jet!).

Obviously deep cleaning is important as well, but regular maintenance will definitely go a long way. Also another handy tip is to make sure you have entrance mats and rugs at the entrance to help decrease the soil load, especially where young kids are concerned…

  9. Mike Ludwig says:

I vacuum my carpet twice a week and remove all stains. It will last along time, between shampooing if the regular maintenance is done.Depending on the quality of the carpet and the soaps you use ,will determine how clean you can get the carpet. My carpet was average priced, 9 yrs. ago and when I shampoo it it gets dirty pretty fast.I really should replace it ,but I don’t have the funds. Thanks,Mike

  10. Whаt’s up, yes this post is truly fastidious and I have learned lot of things from it about taking care of our carpets. thanks.

  11. Clean carpets are so important! They are like huge air filters for your home. If you don’t keep them clean it’s like a clogged filter and your indoor air quality suffers. Thanks for posting!

  12. No matter how clean you keep your home, old carpets accumulate stains and appear dingy. Regular cleaning brightens the carpet and removes the stains.

Carpets are always filthy and if not, full with toxic chemicals that emanate toxic gases. So, here´s how I clean carpets:

    1) Pick up your carpet
    2) Open the door
    3) Put it in the trashbin!

Why do we need carpets anyways?

  14. Prevention is the best way to keep your carpet looking fresh. Vacuuming frequently, using rugs in high traffic areas, and avoiding wearing your shoes inside is best. Accidental spills do happen though, and I’ve found that those robotic spot cleaners you leave on the spot for a lengthy time work extremely well.

  15. Cleaning your carpet on a regular base is very important to maintain its beauty and durability. It is always better to hire a reputed and professional carpet cleaning service provider to clean your carpet as they have all the necessary equipments to get the job done in a proper manner.
