I would think by now most involved in some form of traffic building SEO understands the intent of the Google Panda Project. Google is continually refining it’s ability to measure the value of a page to determine where it should be placed in the search results.
And as usual it’s all about quality. Quality content and quality backlinks.
It’s no surprise that we’ve got to write content that has real value to your visitors and that tells a story. The days of keyword stuffed articles written to be read not by humans but by search engines is over. But just as important as the quality of the content is the quality of the backlinks that are pointing to your website and that’s where guest writing for other popular sites can come into play.
Finding webmasters that are seeking guest writers (like this one) and who own websites that Google considers of “importance” is key to ranking your site high in the search results. The content you provide to the other webmaster needs to be top-notch. Yes it takes effort, but the added exposure, and the traffic building SEO value of the backlinks, is well worth the effort.
But what once your article has been published what can you do to further boost its effectiveness?
Getting More Traffic Building SEO from Your Guest Article
An associate of mine Laura Penekamp contacted me recently to let me know that she had just posted her first guest article. Lisa writes for a Florida based website that serves up car insurance quotes. She was curious now that the article had been published “was there anything else she could do to make it more important in the eyes of Google?”
It’s a great question.
So we put our heads together and brainstormed and came up with some ideas.
Social Media Effects on SEO
There’s been a lot of chatter in the traffic building SEO world and from Google’s Matt Cutts directly about the effects of social media could have on search rankings. It’s known that Google is looking to Twitter, Facebook and most recently to Google Plus for ranking signals.
It seems that in the same way Google looks at a backlink to an article as a sort of quasi “vote” — they are looking at tweets, likes and pluses also as “votes” for the article. How much they are taking this into account at this point to determine rankings is unclear, but it does make sense that a socially popular article should get additional consideration.
1. Be Socialable
You only need to browse around this site for a few minutes to see there’s a lively and engaging audience here. If you are a guest writer, it’s worth your time to develop a great article. One that truly engages this audience. An article that draws attention, stirs action and gets “votes”
You will see that articles that hit the mark are tweeted, liked and plused by many without encouragement.
And if Google is looking at socially popular articles more favorably you should encourage engagement. Ask your readers to tweet, like and plus your article.
2. Comments
You have probably also noticed that great articles almost always result in a lot of comments, especially on this site. I can’t say for sure, but I would have to think that an article that is well commented on must have some effect on search rankings. If Google really is starting to look at socially popular content, a well commented article would seem to me to fit that criteria.
3. Branch Out
As the author of a guest article you can further increase its effectiveness in a variety of ways. You can of course tweet the article out to your own followers. Same goes for liking it on Facebook and Plusing it on Google. And that’s only the beginning:
- What would happen if you were to also pay attention to the on-page optimization of your article so it had a fighting chance to rank highly in the search results?
- What would happen if you mentioned your article when being interviewed?
- What would happen if you backlinked to your article from time to time?
- What would happen if you shared the article with readers of your newsletter?
- What would happen if you quoted your article within other articles?
The more you engage the audience and promote the article, the more popular you make it, — the better it is for both you and for the webmaster who owns the site. The more important that page also becomes to Google, resulting in more valuable the backlinks to your site. It may seem like a lot of work promoting somebody else’s website but actually you both benefit greatly.
Traffic Building SEO – Boosting Your Importance
After chatting at length with Lisa about these strategies, she’s further convinced they’ll work for her in boosting the importance of her article to Google. And they’ll work for you. Lisa provides free auto insurance quotes, but of course these simple and actionable strategies will work whatever it is that you sell or promote.
These simple ideas are the result of the quick brainstorming session and Lisa and I had, and we’re both curious what you think, and what ideas you have? Why not take a moment and let us know what’s working for you by filling out the comment block down below?
And of course please take a moment to Like, Tweet and Plus this article. It could use all the traffic building SEO it can get! 😉
