Yesterday I was listening to a podcast on the Six Pixels of Separation blog, the topic was….
The extinction of the Marketing Dinosaur professional is imminent
Avinash Kaushik the Digital Marketing Evangelist for Google and bestselling business book author of Web Analytics – An Hour A Day and Web Analytics 2.0, was being interviewed and come out with the pearl of wisdom that is the title of this post.
“Come waste time with me”
He also went on to explain how most of the big corporation’s in the business world just don’t get how to effectively use social sites to connect with their market. I mean most of them just throw up a page, run a sweep-stake or post the occasional special, and when nothing happens they proceed to proclaim……
Social media marketing is just a waste of time, and doesn’t convert to sales.
The problem is not the platforms the problem is the executives running these massive advertising campaigns just don’t believe that these social sites are a viable option. Which in turn is going to cause them to become the Dinosaur’s of their industry.
But what on earth has “Come waste time with me” got to do with your small business marketing ideas I hear you ask? I mean what possible benefit can your business gain by people wasting time with you?
Bear with me because even though this message is very simple the importance of it is enormous.
When Avinash came out with “Come Waste Time With Me” was he was pointing out is, most people are on Facebook (and other social sites) to waste time.
Lets take a look at Red Bull as an example as they are probable the best in the business at getting people to waste time on their page. Which when I checked it this morning had 21,069,830 people that liked it,or came their to waste time. A number that expands their bottom line by a figure so huge it won’t fit into my calculator. But that is a whole blog post in it’s own right.
When you land on the Red Bull welcome page they only try to get you to do one thing….

The reason that it is so vitally important to build an online community for your business, (just like Red Bull has) via a Facebook Business page is, people form a connection with your business because they feel part of a community. After all they come to waste time there on a regular basis because of all they great interaction and information that you provide them.
The other kicker with Facebook is that every time they come on over and and waste time on your page, all of there friend see that they have been there as well. Because it shows up in their feed. When you take in to account that the average Facebook user has 130 friends, ever time they waste some time on your page, they are telling their friends and family that your business is worth wasting time on as well.
So what has your experience been with social sites such as Facebook, when it comes to your small business marketing strategies? Have you had a light bulb moment with a great way to get your market to….
