Forget about work, children and learn how to relax and do absolutely nothing. This is the best thing you can do for yourself: your mind, your body, your spirit and your health.
If you do it daily, it will help you to have more energy throughout the day, reduce stress levels, boost brain function, improve your health and, ultimately, live a longer and happier life!

I’ve been mixed between the Paleo and Mediterranean diets. They both have strong points, they both have scientific cons. However, you have to take scientific cons into the realization that we’re not robots and everyone digets differently.
All around a refreshing read on this beautiful new England Sunday morning.
One note I have to make on the sleeping aspect is, naps – I’ve been reading that they can actually screw up your circadian rhythm which I found very interesting (the C.R. is a main factor toward why we need to sleep, if our body’s alarm clock is off it just won’t work).

Hi James, I guess it depends on the person. Everybody’s different. Some people really need only 7 hours of sleep while others do 8-9 and need a nap too. I think we need to listen to our body and if it tells us it’s time to rest, then we should do that. But if you are full of energy and can run all day after a good night sleep, that is fine too. To me, there’s 4 major simple things that have the biggest effect on keeping you healthy and living well into your 80′s, 90′s and beyond.
1. Most of what you eat should be vegetables – Vegetables are low in calories, sources of many varieties of nutrients, and they fill you up. Keep it to a variety of colors and types and you’re guaranteed all the nutrients you need. If you need specific percentage, it should be 50%+ of your diet.
2. Don’t eat too much – I don’t think humans were ever meant to gorge themselves on 40 pc chicken nuggets, mcdoubles, or vegas style buffets. Eating too much clearly leads to obesity, diabetes, and numerous other problems proven extensively by science. Eat in moderation.
3. Exercise at least 20 minutes a day, 5 days of the week – Sure more exercise is usually better, but significant health benefits are found already at the 20 minute level if you look at various studies. It’s a reasonable recommendation and definitely doable. Go for a jog, bike, hike, swim, dance–anything as long it keeps you breathing for 20 continuous minutes. Throw in 2 sessions of strength training and you’re golden.
4. Get enough rest – Sleep is essential. Recovery is essential. Organize, plan, and prioritize. You aren’t meant to run around 24 hours a day on caffeine.
4 simple, easy to remember guidelines that cover 80% of what you need to do be healthy: eat mostly vegetables, don’t eat too much, exercise, get enough rest.

Sugar is something that makes you both look old and become older.
I´ll explain how:
Sugar actively ages you binds to proteins in a process called glycogen. Those proteins include collagen and elastin. That´s what your skin is made of.
Your skin breaks and get brittle because of sugar makes it less elastic.
But it doesn´t stop there. Sugar later makes collagen and elastin mutate, and that´s when wrinkles become hard to erase!
So that´s my advise on top of your great ones: drop refined sugar!

Our body is in a constant and never ending struggle for survival. Scientists estimate that each of our cells must withstand around 10,000 individual assaults from reactive oxygen species (ROS) or free radicals. Amazingly, the body has an incredible system of self-healing that withstands the onslaught and rebuilds what has been damaged.
Oxidative stress is the damage that occurs when free radicals outnumber the body’s antioxidants. This damages all body cell components: proteins, lipids and DNA. In fact, researchers have found that one out of every three proteins is rendered dysfunctional by unchecked free radical damage.
Thiols are sulfur containing compounds in the body that act as antioxidants. They react with free radicals to neutralize them. In a 2003 study published in the Journal of Anti Aging Medicine, low serum thiol levels were found in nine different categories of human sickness and disease.

Healthy individuals that received chiropractic care for 2 or more years had higher serum thiol levels than those with disease. It showed that some of the patients had serum thiol levels higher than what is associated with normal wellness.

Hi Elena, When I was a teen, I was in a magnet program that left me with just 2 hours a sleep every night for 2.5 years. It was a lifestyle that really took a toll so that part about sleep, I get it. I agree with Sunny Mui – exercise must be emphasized more. We are built to move. Sedentary lifestyles are a major problem. Regular cardio and strength training will reduce all the biofactors that contribute to heart disease and diabetes. Exercise even reduces bad cholesterol so helps manage those diets with a little too much saturated fat – why some athletes “get away” with a lot of fatty meat in their diets.

You are right about olive oil, we have olive oil in our meals on a daily basis, on breakfast ( ex. humous, you should try it one day!) and also we use it for cooking, instead of butter.
And vegetables are always available in dinner and launch.

I totally believe in a glass of red wine every night for good health. I walk 60 minutes a day and I sleep until I wake up. I work from home so I don’t have the daily stress of waking up to an alarm clock which has done wonders for me.
