10 signs that you are daddy

What are some of the things that make you daddy?
I mean besides the usual things every dad goes through. Like: you couldn’t hold back your tears the first time you held baby in your arms, shared the late nights, loved the cries, held your breath, changed the diapers, put up with the noise, said no for the umpteenth time before surrendering with a yes, couldn’t stand the crying, thought of banging your head on the wall but refrained, and the other usual experiences every dad has the privilege of going through.

Ah”¦Yes – The joys of being a dad.

Here is a list I put together of 10 sure signs that you are daddy.

Feel free to add to this list in the comments.

The 10 sure signs that you’re daddy are:

  1. Your own needs don’t matter as much anymore.
  2. You participate in activities even when you don’t feel like it and just to see the smile on their little faces makes it worth your while.
  3. You realize you’re not as daring as you thought you were and some of the stunts your little ones pull just scare the living daylights out of you. To top it off they do it with a smile on their faces.
  4. The authority that you thought you had gets defied by a firm “No.”
  5. You always have to stay strong and be brave through the storms because you know your children are looking to you to be that foundation they need. As long as daddy’s looking tough then everything is going to be O.K.
  6. It breaks your heart to say “No” at times but you do it anyway knowing it’s for their benefit.
  7. You see their little faces when they’re sleeping and deep down inside you know you would move heaven and earth just for them.
  8. You look forward to going home to the little hugs and kisses that await you.
  9. Even after a long days work and you feel like you could just drop dead you still somehow manage to gather whatever remaining energy you have left to smile and pick your children up when you see them.
  10. No matter how hard you try sometimes you can’t help but feel inadequate and you always feel a need to work harder and go the extra mile for your children’s sake.

Well, that’s my list of 10 sure signs that you are daddy.

What are some other signs that make you daddy?

  1. Great post.

My list is simple though and that is…

Love your kids enough to give TOUGH love when needed!

  2. I could’t agree with number 7 any more! Especially on a long Sunday when the kids wreck the house, break every rule, and drive you crazy. You look at them when they’re sleeping and you forget all that.

My youngest son threw up in his car seat the other day as we were almost back to the house. My wife took him upstairs to get him cleaned up and while she was doing that I was outside scrubbing down his car seat. As I was taking it apart to get in every nook and cranny, going over it with cleaning product and then water to assure ‘harsh chemicals’ weren’t going to be rubbing up on him, and then setting up a fan to make sure it dried out properly I thought to myself….Man, I must really love this kid.

Awesome Charles. Wonderful experience and lesson [for me] of love and patience. My son spilled my cup of tea once while we were sitting on the floor and it seeped in under my shorts. Good thing it was warm or I wouldn’t have been able to sit for a week LOL! Anyway, I got up and said “nothing that can’t be fixed” and went to get changed and wiped the floor and mat with joy. I will be honest and say that this isn’t always my response and some days I just want to pull my hair out :D but love…love…love helps me keep my sanity.

  4. I agree with the 10 sure signs you’re a daddy that you posted here. When they do something wrong or when they want something and you have to say “No”, you need to show them tough love, as daddies are supposed to be.

Thank you Sylvia. I will admit that tough love for my older 2 children is easier than for the younger ones. Especially with my 2year old daughter who reads me like a book. I win some and lose some and it is something I continually work on. I find that by the time they turn 3 tough love gets a little easier. Well it did with my 2nd son anyway :D .

  8. Reading this gave me goose bumps. I think 90% of the dads connect to the majority of your points.
At one time it was all about you then later you and your wife. now it is mostly about the children.

And sure.. I’ll need to give him the Tough Love – but hopefully not for a long time :-)

Agree, this is a great post. Being a parent is the hardest, yet most rewarding job there is. To me, being a Dad means giving someone the opportunity to live a life better than you did yourself.

  17. Becoming father is the most beautiful feeling of your life and its amazing that when you become father all your personal prioritizes becomes secondary.

Thanks a lot for the insight! My wife is due in October and I will be joining the legions of fatherhood. I have already been experiencing changes in my outlook on life and what I expect of myself. Great article that opened my eyes with a small peek into the window of daddydom.

  25. I like this article. I’m thinking a lot about my dad lately, and what made him a great daddy was his protection. He would scare away the ghosts and make me feel better when I was worried or anxious. He really was my rock when I was younger.

  26. I am still waiting for the day when I will be a Dad myself. I love kids and they make a married life much more worthwhile.

  27. I know you get all the joys out of it now but I would trade anything to keep them an infant so I can have some peace and quiet.
