Man, as a species loves to talk.
We are all about communication and have been throughout history.
The technology we have developed is simply staggering. Going back to cave painting, cave men documenting their lives for future generations, to the world we have today, it has been relentless.
I am out, driving around doing our “day job”. Yet I am writingthis using a tablet computer connected to the internet using a mobile (cell) phone!
Technology allows the individual go set up shop, virtually, and to stake a claim, to be an authority and specialist in ways we simply couldn’t do a mere handful of years ago.
One of the latest tools to allow any man to be a somebody is the Blog.
Blogs allow us to share, with anyone who cares to listen, to anything about “your say” to holding political or religious sway over a nation.
They allow us go be experts in our field, to have a voice with distant lands and with people we could never have met such a short time ago.
So we are here - Great!
We are experts - Great!
We write tremendous and helpful articles – GREAT!
And no one comes……… Gre….. Say what?

No One Comes…..
Someone said, “Build it and they will come.”
Sorry to break it to you, they won’t.
Even if you have the best blog in the world, even if you are theleading expert of “ThingyWhatsIts”
Why?
I like to think of a party, or some other meeting place, it’s packed, and everyone is talking.
You are standing in the door way, looking for an expert in “ThingyWhatsIts”
Can you hear him, that expert, the no1 authority?
I am guessing no. If you can hear someone, it is because they are the loudest, not even the best at times. There will probably be a group around him, all quietly listening to every word. You may even hear some of them calling get you, saying, “You gotta listen to this guy!”
And you do. You stop looking for THE expert, who sits there quietly saying, “I built it, so where are they?”
That is you, and the internet, only a million times worse, and with more and more blogs everyday, it will only get worse.
They Will Only Come If They Know Where It IS
You Have to get YOU out there. You need people to know you, and your blog exist.
Some people turn to advertising, which can be great, IF you have the money to do it.
However, you know that LOUD guy at the party, he is already earning from his site, and can out spend you on advertising.
So You have hardly any visitors, and now you are loosing money instead of making some.
Most quit at this stage, but not you!
You Need Some Visitors To Your Site, WITHOUT Paying For Them.
One method, which is not new at all, is blog syndication.
You join a group, and you comment on someone else’s blog, and they comment on yours.
Google will see the traffic and the comments, and increase your rank. Slightly.
One problem is that is is always the same people, same IP addresses (ip address is like the street address on the internet) and.google will recognise the pattern. Then, often, new comments from the same people will not count, so you are now wasting time.
I am in a group (The NetWorking SuperStars with Gavin Mountford that offers this as part of “The System” but has a cleaver rotation system to stop, or limit, the “same people again” problem.
More than that we support others and get support in return. MORE HERE.
Now you have some visitors, better yet, you have some comments. And often they are great ego boosters - the commentees will be positive, supportive, and generally AGREE with you, and your points.
And…… No one ELSE comes. This blog syndication doesn’t work!
Let me tell you a secret, the reason why this strategy doesn’t work…..
You are doing it wrong!
It’s your fault, all your fault!
Some people don’t like hearing something is their fault. If it is someone else’s fault they are more comfortable. Let me help you see what is wrong with that.
If it is the country’s fault, how are you going to to fix that? You need to be Prime Minister or President. How’s that going?
If it is your company’s fault, how you going to fix that? You need to be the C.E.O. How’s that going?
You see, if it is your fault, YOU can fix it!
So that is GREAT!
So first, let me check…..
- You are in a blog syndication system? – I am in This One – Join us!
- Youare commenting on others Blogs?
- You are getting some, and sometimes it is only some, comments back?
- And your posts are Worth commenting on in the first place? ( do you give free info, provide value, or try to sell with every breath?)
So you are doing the system, you just might not be working the system.
I like to work the system using a technique I call H!i Jacking.
Hi! Jack Your Way to New Blog Visitors.
Now, you are leaving comments on other people’s blogs, but what ARE you saying?
You see, often we comment to on people’s blogs because wehave to, not because we want to, so give It little thought.
So let’s say you visit on comment on Bob’s Blog. (Bob is my go to hyperthetical example name) You say,
- “Great advice Bob.”
- “Good advice Bob.”
- “Terrific insight Bob.”
- “Wonderful post Bob!”
Bob is very happy. Especially if he knows about Hi Jacking!
I come to Bob’s blog. It is great, I think, well…. It MUST be, there are so many comments all basically saying – great….
- No one is having REAL conversations though.
- And no one seems to disagree.
- And no one is saying, “Yeah, but it’s ok for you….” (almost seems compulsory on a successful persons blog!
You know what, it all kinda looks phoney. And, it is always the same people saying great post too… I bet they are not even real people….
Yikes – big backfire!
So, get on with it, how do you Hi! Jack a blog, and turn your comments into traffic?
First,
Get Real!
If a post is not great, don’t say, it’s great! What poor taste you appear to have, and people can see it too. Remember when I said have posts worth commenting on? I know some people visit my site, but don’t leave a comment.
I sometimes visit their site, and don’t comment too. You can’t comment on everything!
So pick:
- something you are interested in,
- something you blog about.
- Something you are an expert in.
- Something you are an AUTHORITY on.
Ask,
- questions
- Clarification
- More info
- Show what you know too, by adding more to the conversation.
- Show you too are an AUTHORITY - and be two AUTHORITIES discussing the topic.
- If you disagree, do so, but in a nice way. Don’t go in calling them an idiot, and they are wrong. It may make you seem more important than the blogger, but also as one who needs toput others down.
- Would it not be better to simply put another case forward?
- To offer a difference perspective?
- A different technique?
- Would it not be better to be seen as someone who helps all, and is willing to put their hand down, and help pick up the other blogger?
- I can tell you one thing, other readers will, and will want to see more of “your stuff”
Make sure you make it easy for others to leave comments easily on your blog. Use Comment Luv - there is a free version, so it won’t cost you a thing.
When you are commenting on another blog, and the Blog does not use Comment Luv, always leave a little footnote:
Posted By Jon Barry
of http://JonBarry.co.uk
Even if the site uses “no follow” code (for search engines) PEOPLE wiol see it. Even if they have to cut and paste it, they will find you.
When they do, you know you have just learnt how to Hi Jack blog visitors.
Of course, not all the people you need to reach will be in your blog syndication network.
You have to go out there and find them.
- Search google for some blogs on the areas you blog about.
- Follow them.
- COMMENT on them.
- Follow some of the people who comment there, and comment on their blogs too.
- Find some forums on your blog topic, and put good posts and comment there. Have a link to your blog in your footer, or in your profile.
You may find the people who will be in your community also go to other blogs, so that is a great place to go and find some, on the other blogs.
I hope this technique helps you to make better comments on blogs, and comments that serve you, to drive traffic to your blog.

Yep I think that quality is better than quantity especially.
For my posts and my comments as well I’ve chosen do much less in quantity, but take the time to do quality

Hello Jean-Luc,
I agree completely with your idea of quality over quantity with comments.
If there is not something I can expand on, ask questions about, or generally add I normally don’t bother…. what is the point?
Apart from getting s link back to my blog, what is the benefit?
In this post I talk about making yourself look like someone who also has knowledge, so that people may follow you back to your blog.
Someone just saying “Great Post” isn’t going to get floods of people following that!
Thanks for joining the discussion!

In my view we should try to read blog first of all and then we should leave a comment on that and always we should try to ask a question about that.
Twitter: Jon_Barry
Hi Sam
I agree, how can we comment without reading the post?
However, it seems many just go for the links, so put anything down just to get teh link.
I assume that many would allow posts that only consist of “Great Post!”
I may consider dropping posts that are only that, as they do not add anything.
Is it better to have a post with no coments, or to just have a bunch of link grabbing ones, which adds nothing, but puffs up the writer, until they work out what they did?
Thanks for adding to the discussion, and stop by again soon!

Hi Jon,
Commenting on a blog basically depends on the type of post that are being posted.Well, what I think while commenting is to notify the author about his post, the better writing side of his post and if any questions raised or tips given, I would like to answer that question or would appreciate the tips if it matches with my decision. This is as simple as that. Just you need to read the post first and then comment as according to it. That’s all.
Twitter: Jon_Barry
Hi Aditi
That is exactly what we all should be doing, reading and commenting, but, ironically especially on sites with Comment LUV the tenancy to just say Great Post as an excuse to leave a link (as comment LUV does) seems to take over.
They are not looking to improve or add to the discussion, merely getting a link it the aim.
It was from seeing people just go for the link that really made me write this post! (not here btw, but on my blog, and on others…. too many Great post, now go read mine….!)
Thanks for your comments!

Hey John,
I usually comment on the same blogs over and over again, and that’s mostly because I understand what I want to read (and continue to read), and that’s a way to build relationships with the author and the people reading the blog. That’s a lot more important to me than building links and comment on a lot of blogs to drive traffic.
I believe in relationships and building trust through strong relationships.
Great post

Jens P. Berget recently posted..Your Car Tells a Story – about You

Hi Jens,
great comment about finding your preferred blogs, and being active there.
That is really important, and you will be seen, by the blogger and the rest of the community there, as someone who is an active, and knowledgeable commenter.
In theory, that should drive traffic back to you, and should help your rankings too.
Spreading to other blogs, leaving one post here and there, just to add links would probably be a full time job, to influence the search engines anyway, but could, if lucky, drive traffic…
I suspect that building relationships the way you are though, would be a better tactic, even though I suspect you are not doing it AS a tactic, just what feels right for you.
Thanks for adding to this conversation, that was a very good point to raise.
Thank You

Great post Jon!
—-Finished—-*
*Joke! lol
I’m familiar with the idea of ‘hijacking’ a blog for visitors but never really came up with a name for it like you have, it works like a dream if you get your comment on a high traffic post mind you.
I recently (like 2 days ago) came up with a new kinda hijacking but more for getting commenters to come to my site that might interest readers here. No idea if it will work yet but it’s an interesting experiment nonetheless IMO.
Note: I wouldn’t do this on just any site, this will (hopefully) attract internet marketers which is the particular group I write for on this particular site.
Here’s what I did…
I found a couple of sites that search Google for posts with a niche topic (keyword) and the words:
Add link
Add site
Add URL
Add website
Submit link
Submit site
Submit URL
Submit website
Suggest link
Suggest site
Suggest URL
link exchange
reciprocal link
submit article
add article
So I decided to put a text box in my sidebar with all of those words in there to see if it brings a bunch of commenters.
I hate getting spammed as much as the next guy but a bunch of people finding my site and commenting can only be good and on top of that, they are all going to be internet marketers of some description and might be interested in what I have to say.
Once G has re-crawled my site I reckon these types of visitors will start to turn up. Might be a good thing, might not but there’s only one way to find out!
This is exactly what I put in the text widget:
“Add link
”
Add site
Add URL
Add website
Submit link
Submit site
Submit URL
Submit website
Suggest link
Suggest site
Suggest URL
Ask for a link exchange or reciprocal link
But I might let you submit article or add article if it is of exceptional quality
You are probably here ‘cos i tricked ya, in your face!
Makes the site look bloody ugly at the moment but it’s all in the name of science. lol
How’s that for (attempting to) reverse engineer(?) commenters? :-p

Jon Barry recently posted..Oranges

Hi Chris,
This is a really interesting idea, although I feel that only having those words in the text boxes may not be enough, and may make your bounce rate rocket.
May I suggest fleshing out the words to links to some posts.
Have you got any you could re-work, to highlight these terms, or can you start to write a series to match the keywords?
Then when Google sees the list, instead of a plain list, they will be a list to further posts, internal links which it can add, and I feel will add more weight.
what maybe even better, if you feel you can provide the content, is making each of those words a CATEGORY, changing that list to a category list (maybe prettier that what you have….) and write posts for the categories, so there are more than one post for each, over time….
if you have any posts you can add to the new categories they will flesh out that bit quicker.
Then anyone following those links will have some tings to read, the bounce rate should even drop, and you will have people on the site longer (and Google does monitor that, and sites with a higher than average bounce rate get a lower score. They use that to see if people are finding it from a keyword that is not relevant)
It would be great if you would keep us upto date with this experiment, and perhaps writing a blog post about the results, and the techniques you used would be cool.
If you do that, please visit my site, and link over to the post, and let me know too!
That could be very interesting, whether it works or not, as all is going to be good info.
I feel though, with enough content to back up that list, it can only add to your success.
And really wild that we are both from the big C – with all the people I talk to, most are USA, some UK, and I think you are the first from WALES in a long time!
Thanks for the great add, and look forward to hearing how this goes.

To be honest Jon, I’m not really too bothered about the sites bounce rate etc buddy.
Although I prettied it up nice its more like a playground where I mess around and put posts showing stuff that I want to remember. If it is also helpful to others and I can earn a little for that help it’s a bonus.
No fear of me changing categories to attract THAT kind of visitor! lol
Writing posts for each phrase would also be out of the question as I need the words on every page to get into the Google rankings for the maximum amount of different keyword phrases that somebody would be searching for to go along with the ‘add URL’ keywords.
Does that make sense?
If it works and visitors read/take recommendations then I’ll probably just stick to the main traffic bringer in the sidebar cunningly disguised in a sentence. lol
Sent you a message over at your site btw Jon, did ya get it? If so, drop me a line sometime soon!

I know exactly what you mean, per example this week i was trying to find good deals over on hosting services, this is because one of my services will soon run out, and well … you know the importance of getting deals here and there… when i went into this guys blog, i made a comment because i was interested in knowing about the deal he had, if it was for the current customers as well, or only to new customers… and requested info regarding to the deal, i did saw alot of ” well done” good job and alot of tralala thats what i call tralala comments… to get the backlinks, and the guy only by the fact i did use the name petrus as name(note is not even a keyword- keyword to me,would be cat food or dog food) Petrus is a nick that ppl call me since i opened my website… the guy instead of replying to a possible customer… “Yep, too bad you missed out on that deal, and what is worse you missed out on all that link juice because you didn’t follow the comment policy.” I mean?? It puts a person right off to make any kind of comment or to even buy anything.Well with this i learn something… that i cant use nicks i have to use my own name when i comment something i wasn’t aware of… but also… what people don’t realize is that they are so worried in getting the comments for the dam keywords …and that to me…invalidates any comment especially the ones saying Yeah… good comment, in the end of the day they are not interested, not even there for what the person is writing… only to get the backlink… that is what i do call tralala comments. Good job, keep on doing it… tralala ask them something to see if they reply, they are not even there… dont even follow whats next i had several like that in some of my blogs.
I will stop for now… lol sorry… your article keeps me going…

I have no idea why someone would be so off – so nasty even, to someone commenting on their blog.
having visitors is a privilege, commenters are not there just to pump you up, but are therefor YOU TO SERVE.
That guy got it backwards, to my mind, was a little up his own arse…. and deserves the lack of returning visitors following rude treatment.
I would ask you to name and shame, only they would get more links, or PR from it, so just dump them. There are millions of blogs out there, and people with the same info, and would be delighted in having you there, active, and commenting.
Try to keep your strength, keep commenting the way you want, and to use your commenting to attract people to your blog.
Remember when they get there to look after them, reply to their comments, and look after them, as for a commenting policy, or rules…. well, I will let you form your own opinion on that!

Can one person make a difference, and can one comment get you the big spike in traffic we all dream of?
it is possible – it is a lot of luck needed… but if one good comment, on a popular blog gets a reply from the blogger, that is positive, and maybe he or she may follow you back to your blog, and then tell people about it, it could happen…
traffic from Facebook.

it sounds a little weird when you say, “… I read the blog before I post a comment…” however, I know what you mean.
we see so many “comments” that have nothing to do with the post, but I think these are bots, given a certain amount of text, which they post in random orders, to get past the minimum character count type anti spam measures we can apply.
Answering a question is a GREAT way to get interaction from your readership, and one we often fail to use, effectively.
I saw a great post today, where the blogger was asking her readers if they knew of a replacement for a plugin she was using, but had not been updated for a while….. clearly a post asking for interaction, and I was amazed at how many people answered 9many with nope don’t know of any….) but in the middle one guy said, ok then, I will code a new plugin WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO CALL IT?
WOW!
the guy is going to put his project – another plugin – on hold to copy and update the old plugin.
That is a result, from one simple question.
Thanks for raising the point, one we all should remember and use more often.

It’s sort of funny to read all of the comments. Such a diversified group.
Commenting is sort of an art form. It’s easy to type a couple of sentences which really have no meaning at all. But what a waste of time.
If you have something to say then say it and do it in a graceful manner. It’s why we comment.
Just be thankful you can voice your opinion! When so many others in this world can’t.

I feel commenting should be a conversation.
Many use it for gain, and there is nothing wrong with that, as long as it also adds to the conversation.
To go as far as trying to stuff keywords into the comments, who has the time!
also, doesn’t that just bump up the post, not just the comment?
Though we need to remember we do get links back, or JUICE, as it is so wrongly called….. so if we want more, we should give more, be more helpful, and not try to squeeze more out of a single comment.
By the time you have done all of that, you could have made five, maybe ten comments in other places, spreading the word that you are a team player too.
Squeezing just the one post is not going to do that, too…..
I am glad you found this post to be of use to you, and hope it helps you to grow your blog, your influence, and for you to be a team player in this world of ours!
And after the last comment, from Galen says, we should all be thankful we have the free speech to say these things at all.

Hi Adam, what a simple concept in this tactic driven world we live in.
I like the content, the topic, and want to talk about it! How right you are.
There is one thing I know about that, the writer too is probably interested too, and you can learn more in the comments, by asking questions, probing for more info, than was in the post in the first place.
the blogger may feel, wow people like this, lets write more posts, or will just tell all in the comments, to the people talking to them about it.
Great outlook, and may the conversation continue!
Jon
I find it funny when i see those generic posts like “awesome info”, “great site” etc on blogs, and sometimes on mine. I think it is just a lazy way to post quick links. At times i delete comments like that.

Hi Xavier,
pretty lame, and yes, we should delete them….
sometimes though, i post them, to prove a point, or something, but remove the LUV (so i guess that takes all links out, or does a no follow on them)
I probably should just delete, but I kinda have fun with them some.
If I can use them as an example, i will.
fair game!

I am glad you liked it.
At first I thought the post was a bit long, that i would loose people along the way, but my style, (old windbag) seems to draw things out in almost a narrative style, but I find that I am able to add examples, which, if the plan works makes my points easier to understand, for you to see where I am coming from.
Go forth and communicate!

Good quality is the main reason why we leave good comments . Also it helps to motivate the owners of the blog to write more in future!!

Hi Gurwinder,
I hope you mean this post, as it has had a few comments, was of good quality, and indeed i have thought of writing more for ComLuv in future!
I think anyone who, seeing people like, interact, and ask about the topics they are writing about would write more, i think they wouldn’t be able to help themselves, the ego boost that would give.
The trick is to remember, they want to goods, the info, the opinion, from you. Not you, with a bloated ego, but you, are you are now, maybe a little shy, timid, an introvert, saying his piece, adding his knowledge to the collective mind.
That is who you have to stay to keep the ones who liked you at the start of your journey.
who likes the guy who gets some status, and uses it to look down on people?
Thanks for your comments, and will try to not let them go to my head!

Interesting tips, although I have seen very limited success from comment backlinks. As an opinionated person I comment usually because I know how good it feels to get feedback from something you have written (as well as how bad it feels to get negative feedback, or more acurately: to be trolled.) I comment because discourse is an intergral part of an evolving civilization and always try to offer up something interesting or helpful.

Hi Andy
I am sorry you have had poor success from your commenting.
I have heard it said, (as after writing the article, I have had talks with many who either had written on the subject before, or who rushed out theirs after ) who have pointed out it is all a numbers game. Not really what we want to hear, and can be a long road if this is the only way we are using to gain more visitors.
Maybe your blog is a bit specialized, so not many would naturally find you, (ok I had a quick look) maybe that site is not where people would expect to find a blog.
Maybe having a seperate site, just you, where you can write, may have more success.
However, I guess most of what you are writing is to help build your site.
Ok obvious question, where are you commenting?
To be honest, i would not expect many to follow you from here…. I maybe wrong…. but i feel your audience is not reading this
Where are your audiences visiting? You need to be there…. nothing new to you, I am sure.
The comix world seems to be a growing industry, but i feel so many will jump on the bandwagon, the ones with money, and not afraid to splash it around will get the people in the doors.
If I am tight, and you are selling comix, i guess you are all over eBay etc?
I feel you have your heart in the right place, but are feeling frustrated by not having the readership you want, need, crave. Nothing wrong with that, in fact, without it, nothing new would ever get done.
I do feel you could benefit from a separate blog too, where you can be you, and maybe be freed from the constraints yo may have in the comic world.
I hope this helps and would suggest that you look on facebook for blog syndication groups.
I know of one opening soon, I like it, active in it, and will be going further with it soon.
I feel something like that maybe of use to you too.
If you want more info, hit me back on here, I will check every few days or so….
Good luck, and carry on the discourse!

Good Quality is the main thing when we are dropping a comment on a website. I believe that it should be unique and appreciate the author so that write more and more in future!!
Thanks for telling us that how to dropping a best comment.

Hi Ravi
My pleasure!
One thing I think of is, when others see my comments, are they going to WANT to see more from me, i.e. visit my blog, or are they thinking, Look at this guy, what an idiot, or cheeky, just looking to get a link in…..
or WORSE, this guy looks DESPERATE to get links back to his site!
Also, comments that have been left by a bot, who really follows those back? All you are doing is spreading the word that you are not a nice guy, and to avoid at all costs!
Thanks for the nice words, indeed, I am planning on writing more, for this blog!

If I have nothing of value to contribute to an article or blog post then I generally do not comment. I’ve been blogging for several years but I don’t leave many comments at all. In most cases, what I’m feeling has already been said by someone else so I don’t think I’m adding value to the conversation. Should we still comment even if it’s to say I agree?
Amanda recently posted..Work From Home + Homeschooling Schedule

Hi Amanda, great question…..
On a busy blog, on a busy article, there will be so many who are agreeing, which in it’s way is great, as it is adding SOCIAL PROOF.
I would though suggest that you agree, but then do something to single yourself out from the herd, so you can be heard….. (I liked that….ahem)
So maybe something like,
Hi Amanda, what a great suggestion, to comment when we agree. What I have found is that by doing that, I can help the author with some social proof, help others – by adding the social proof, but look for something you can expand on, to take further.
If you feel there is something the author held back on, perhaps so they kept the article short (i have that problem ALL THE TIME!!!) maybe you can start the conversation go that way, allowing the author to come back and add MORE, because someone started that off.
Also, over time it will allow others to see a clearer picture of you, and also of course to SEE YOU. If you are not commenting, how would people know you were even here?
So yes, even if you only have a ME TOO comment, use that, but then try to take it further.
Imagine you are reading other comments, what would you WISH another commenter would say? What further areas would you like to see added to the conversation?
Perhaps you agree, but use a different technique, tool, plugin or whatever.
adding that adds to the conversation, and shows perhaps there is more than one way of doing “it”
Thanks for your comments, and the question, and I hope in some small way I have encouraged you to be more active in your commenting.

In danger of saying “great blog” and leave it at that… but that would have shown I didn’t read it. If you’re taking up someone else’s blogspace it’s only courtesy to try to make some constructive comment on it. So here’s my question: what should the philosophy be for the blogger who gets hi Jack style comments? Trash them or keep them? After all, who are we to judge other people’s motives – perhaps their “Great job” was honestly meant?
