Humans are creatures of habit. We are used to doing certain actions, and we even feel bad if we miss them. Some of them are done consciously, but most of them are not. So, what are some of the bad habits that we have, especially when it comes to eating? Do you eat too much? Or at an improper time? Are you consuming too much sugar? All these problems can be solved easily. We’ll try and list some of the most common bad habits and present an easy way of solving each and every one of them.

Mid-night snacking

How many times did you get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and you ended up checking the fridge and eating that leftover food? It happens to the best of us, you should not feel ashamed. But there are some obvious consequences related to this kind of behavior. Our bodies have their own internal clocks, and that is why we love sleeping at night, when we feel tired, while during the day, we are awake. The same goes for food. Calories are spent differently during the day and during the night. That is why it is important to know how much you should eat and when you should eat. Eating during the night may cause you to get that extra pound or two, and then you’ll have a lot of trouble getting rid of it. If you want to stop this, try not to keep leftover food in the fridge, cook only as much as you need for one day. Remember that eating excessively will not solve your problems.

Eating junk food

We enjoy junk food. It is written in our genetic code that we like fatty, salty foods with plenty of sugar. Not only do these types of food taste better, but they can even be a bit cheaper than preparing a healthy meal at home. Of course, all of this has a downside. Junk food has too many calories. In short, it gives us too much energy, so much, that we are unable to spend it during our day, and our bodies store it as fat cells. And that is why it is extremely easy to get fat when eating junk food. We just need to control our urges that start to overtake our common sense when we pass fast food stands which are present everywhere. McDonalds restaurants are being opened everywhere, but next time, just pass by and do not go in. If you learn to control your hunger, you’ll start feeling much better, and you’ll lose those sufficient kilograms.

Soft drinks

We like drinking fizzy drinks all the time, during a meal, during a movie, while playing a video game. People who drink one to two cans of fizzy drinks a day, have a 26% greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes. This is a clear example of how our own eating and drinking habits cause us health problems. Why don’t we just replace a glass of Fanta with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice with no additional sugar? Of course, buying a 2 liter bottle is cheaper than buying oranges, but how much can your body really take? Carbonated drinks are a great source of unhealthy sugars, and are among the top reasons why our children are becoming more and more obese every day. The answer to this problem is to simply stop buying them. Try and switch to healthier solutions and explain to your family why is that a good thing. Just think of all the health benefits you will have after you get rid of this habit. You’ll finally be able to whiten your teeth without fear of sodas ruining their new color. You’ll start losing weight and you will feel much younger.

Staying healthy is something that everyone must strive for, it is not something that will happen by itself. You have to dedicate your time, money and patience. Try and prepare meals of the right size, from the ingredients that were bought at the farmer’s market, and that you know are healthy. Replace everything you can with an organic substitution. Use honey instead of sugar, and you’ll start feeling changes in no time. Your body will thank you, and you and your family will lead a longer and healthier life.

  3. I have a habit of eating at midnight sometimes, but I have another doubt if eating in between the meals, a good habit or a bad one. I remember my grandparents use to tell me to eat properly at one particular time but now things have changed. Dieticians always recommend that to eat in 5 meals instead of just 3, and never eat till belly full.

Okay you got me (LOL)! I am a creature to bad eating habits but I have been working on them. I don’t have a problem with midnight snacking. I really don’t do that. But my biggest challenge is the junk food. I rationalize that this fast food restaurant has a salad bar so it must be healthy, right? Then I have an ice cream food item for desert because I felt I deserved it because of eating a salad and not a hamburger. So this is a challenge that I am slowly overcoming. But I’m sure I’m the only one that has ever fallen prey to this right? :)

The keep really is moderation and activity. It is ok to have a soda. It is ok to have a bite if you wake up hungry. Do so in moderation.
Second point is most of us could afford to spend a little more time doing some sort of physical activity like walk around the block or ride a bike. I always take the stairs instead of the escalator. Yesterday I walked up the six flights of stairs instead of taking the elevator. That means I could have that extra cookie or whatever if I want to.
Finally, “Calories are spent differently during the day and during the night.” Really? I have heard several doctors, and no, not that nut Dr. Oz, say that a calorie is a calorie and the body burns it all the same.

    Hi Ivan,
Good article. Points well taken. Midnight snacks are especially bad. I used to do that when I was younger, fortunately it didn’t affect my weight, high metabolism. But now, I would really pay the price for doing that. :-) Thanks and best wishes!

I tend to eat more of junk food especially when I haven’t got enough sleep. Leading a healthy lifestyle is very important. I don’t see a problem in having junk food once in a while. Anything in excess or irregular eating habit can cause a range of health problems that could take a while to fix. I haven’t had soft drinks in a long time after learning about the sugar levels.

I also do not drink a ton of soda. I make sure I get enough water in my body daily. It is now a habit to grab a water bottle on my way out the door in the morning . Also lemon juice is good for changing the ph of your body. I’ve also heard of the many great benefits of acv (apple cider vinegar with the mother) . look it up.

I have success losing weight when I cut out sugars, but once I revert back to carbs it is like an addiction….I crave sweets. If I am able to stick to a keto diet, my cravings subside after about 3-4 days and I get into deep ketosis.

One should totally totally avoid junk foods and soft drinks. But midnight snack can be done with an apple or any fruit.
