I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. The best way to get fit is to make it fun! If you
don’t enjoy your fitness regime, there is no way you’ll keep it up. I’ve seen many friends
fail because they see exercise as a chore and they just hate doing it. I don’t understand
it because if you exercise properly it should make you feel great, so here’s my guide to
making fitness fun.

1. Don’t get tired

I think the reason so many of my friends think they hate exercising is because every time
they try to do it they over-do it. There is no need to exercise so vigorously that your face
is bright red and you’re gasping for breath. In fact, if your face is bright red and you’re
gasping for breath, you’re definitely over-doing it and are probably going to give yourself
a heart-attack!

You don’t have to get your heart hammering in your chest when you exercise, just
elevating your heart rate a little is fine, so begin gently and work up as you feel
comfortable. Always stop before you have to. Pushing yourself to the very limit will only
damage your muscles, exhaust you and leave you hating exercise.

2. Listen to music

For me, exercising is all about getting into the zone, and listening to music really helps
me to do that. When I’m running, I fall into the rhythm of the music I’m listening to
and the music actually helps me keep my own rhythm. It distracts my mind, keeps me
motivated and makes the whole experience a lot more fun.

If you feel self-conscious when outside exercising, putting your earphones in can help to
distance you from the people you pass. You go into your own little world of music. Soon
you’ll completely forget what you look like and concentrate on the enjoyment of the
moment.

3. Join a class

Joining a class can make exercise a social experience, which again helps to make it more
fun. Having a class to go to on a regular basis also means that you have an exercise
appointment, which is a strong deterrent against laziness. Zumba classes are incredibly
popular at the moment because they use dance moves, which means you literally don’t
even notice you’re exercising because it simply feels like fun. I challenge anyone to say
that a Zumba class is boring!

4. Get your own equipment

Many people say that joining a gym is essential to getting fit and staying fit. I’d say it’s a
far better idea to get your own gym equipment. You may not have the motivation of the
hot instructor watching you, but what you do have is the freedom to exercise whenever
you want without going anywhere.

For many people, it’s not the exercise itself that is the struggle but the effort of actually getting up and driving to the gym. Having equipment at home takes this struggle away, and also means you’re free to watch TV or listen to music as you exercise, making the whole experience far more liberating and enjoyable.

Rowing machines and elliptical machines are both great for targeting different muscle
groups and burning calories. Make sure to purchase good quality equipment; if your
home-gym isn’t up to standard you’re unlikely to enjoy using it. Check out the online Horizon elliptical reviews and Yowza elliptical trainers, which are both great quality machines.

5. Get outdoors

It’s important to vary your exercise regime, so don’t just stay inside watching television
while you exercise. It’s important to get outdoors in the sunshine and really feel the
ground beneath your feet and the wind in your hair.

While gym equipment tends to work on toning your muscles, it’s just as important to get a good amount of cardiovascular exercise. One of the best ways to do this is by running in your local park. Remember not to run so fast your face is red and you can’t breathe; running isn’t about going as fast as you can, it’s about endurance.
