Your computer most probably holds precious files such as website backup files, website research, website content, website records, and so on. Imagine if all of this was gone tomorrow. What would you do?

I don’t know about you, but I do not want to risk losing my website files and definitely believe that prevention is better than cure. Unfortunately in some cases there is no cure so prevention is your only savior.

Backup often

You need to ensure you make easy secure backups of your files to make sure they are safe and it is not a hassle to do. If you make your backup procedure difficult then you will most likely avoid it.

Once you have backed up your website files, definitely make sure you backup the files that you have downloaded. It is no good letting them sit on your computer, and we all know that!

Where to store website backup files

Learning how to website backup files is very important for any computer user. It is even more important when you are running a business from your computer like bloggers do. Luckily we have many different ways to store our website backup files to ensure that we never have the stress of losing them.

When guarding your websites backup files, where you choose to store your files sometimes depends on how much it costs and what is available to you. Of course there are free places to store your backup files and these might involve a little bit of extra work.

Here five kinds of computer backup storage examples:

  1. No backup at all
  2. Same disk backups
  3. External backup disks
  4. Network storage
  5. Internet-based backup

I like to use a combination of an [easyazon-link asin=”B002QEBMB4″]external hard drive[/easyazon-link] and also Internet-based backup. This way I am totally covered and I can sleep easy at night knowing that my files are safe.

Software to help backup your website’s files

There are literally hundreds of different kinds of backup software,

even specifically for website files, but what about the backup system at the computer level?

Most versions of Windows contain a backup Wizard that will backup the files that you choose, and also on a schedule. This is a great feature but you have to make sure you are backing up to somewhere safe. Making a backup copy of your files on the same computer where the originals are stored is not a good idea.

If you are interested in using the free Windows backup Wizard follow these instructions:

  1. Go to your start menu and click on the Control Panel link.
  2. Now double-click on the icon that says .backup and restore Center

Building a website is a huge task and to see people lose their entire website because they did not have a backup is just a crime! In WordPress you can simply go to the tools menu and press on the export link to get a backup of your posts. That is a very easy way to at least be able to replace your content in case of an emergency.
