When you are a webmaster you can get sick of hearing about those dreaded back link building techniques that we all “have to do”. Well stop worrying because in this article I am going to tell you about back link building techniques that you need to keep right away from.
I have been building websites for years and I have made many mistakes in my back link building. Unfortunately I missed the class about good backlinking tactics and bad back linking.
4 Back Link Building Techniques to Avoid
Of course there are more than 4 back link building mistakes to make but I will just mention the worst in the group.
#1 Building links too fast
Back link building should always look like human is doing it at a humanly pace. I know this sounds absolutely stupid, but if you are pumping out back links at a million miles a minute then Google and other Search engines get suspicious. Back link building too fast is like earning money and not telling the tax man! It’s just not ok and when you are doing this, it just doesn’t feel ethical.
Article marketing on steroids with article spinning software is a very controversial way of back link building. I have tested this, and yes it worked, but the tests were not done on any websites of value.
#2 Linking to websites in bad neighborhoods
There are websites out there that have been banned by Google already, sites slapped up overnight with copied content, and even sites with illegal content. You get the picture about bad neighborhood websites, need I say more?
You have to keep an eye on websites that you link to also. What if a website you trusted turns bad. What if they desperately need money and start doing underhanded things to get money.
#3 Link exchanges that don’t last
There are many webmaster that you exchange links with in good faith but later you realize that they have broken their part of the deal. After all, link exchanging is usually done on a simple hand shake in an email. I have fallen for this one before.
For example a high page rank website might offer you a link exchange and to make up for their page rank you have to give them a few links. So you were really excited about it and kept their links up. One day you go and check on your links and find that they have been removed. Then they tell you that they do not remember the link exchange in the first place. (I do not exchange back links now)
This makes your website look very generous with its links and possibly even look like they are paid links.
#4 Back link building using the wrong anchor text
What if you are targeting the wrong keyword, the one that has no one searching for it…What if you have optimized your post article for one keyword and then made back links that say something else? You are meant to be telling the search engines what your article is about. If you do not tell them then you are expecting them to guess.
For example you have a post about formatting Windows XP and the article is optimized for that. You build back links using the anchor text “format windows xp” but then you see “format windows vista” gets more searches. You get greedy and try to rank for that also. What is your post about now…? How can we trust you to have the right content when we visit your website? When developing your seo backlinking tactics you should optimize for what your article is really about. When you get this concept right, you will be rewarded.
Back Link Building Techniques
If you really want to have a successful website you need to go about your back link building in an honest way that you can eventually feel good about. You should definitely avoid any schemes and services that offer link packets. Always do human back link building as no one expects you to have thousands of links over night.

I can name a few. Paid links. Done to the extreme, you can get penalized, just as JC Penny did. Or bribing for links, like Overstock did to get coveted .edu links, and was penalized.
I wouldn’t say to avoid ALL link exchanges like the plague, but I would say don’t take just any old link exchange. If you are going to exchange links, then exchange them with people or companies you know and trust and do business with. Or from sites that you honestly believe you will get traffic from having the link, and are not doing it solely for the SEO benefit. At this point Google is probably pretty good at identifying and discounting link exchanges anyway, but as long as you are not linking to bad neighborhoods, they probably won’t hurt you.
The same is true with directories. You probably won’t get a lot of backlink credit from 95% of the directory sites out there. The best directories to be listed in are contextual directories. If you are an accountant for example, then get listed in directories specifically for accountants.
Something else to avoid, is something else that Google Webmaster Tools specifically tells you to avoid, link farms and other link schemes. It’s funny so many people partake in activity that Google specifically says not to. They may not tell us exactly what the best practices are, but they do tell you what the worst practices are.

About your item number 4, it’s worth noting that it is not absolutely essential to include relevant anchor text in every link. This doesn’t look ‘natural’ either. It’s okay just to have your name (as is often the only opportunity). I think sometimes webbers get too concerned about building keyword-rich anchor text links all the time.

I am concerned about anchor text as I have made BIG mistakes by making links with the wrong text!! To make it look natural you can vary the keyword but not change the meaning. It all has to mean precisely the same thing and point to a post that is precisely about that keyword.
If you have great content others will link to you as well and then you have a total natural mix…But if the wrong message gets out there you need to make more links with the right message.
That’s what I do and it works!

Sounds like good advice. From what I have read about SEO there seems to be a real paradox – you need links to get noticed, but you are not supposed to build your own links, they are supposed to come naturally. But how do you get natural links if people do not find you first? Catch 22. No wonder there are so many scams for link building!

I always wonder about the whole bad neighborhood thing. Some are obvious while others are sort of borderline and sometimes I am unsure if they are a bad neighborhood. The other thing is who or what determines that they or the site is indeed a bad neighborhood. Like I said the obvious ones are no big deal, some are just not easily apparent unless you want to spend a lot of time on it. Isn’t the point about link building that it should be done “naturally”. Google is using links as a way to see what other people think about your site. So if you are self-promoting it defeats the whole point!
I understand why people want to do it themselves but it seems like you will always be constantly swimming against the tide – how will you ever be able to out compete with sites that are building links naturally by being popular?
My most successful site went from nothing to 100k hits in a matter of weeks, I did a little bit of promotion to kick things off but after that it I’ve never “built a link”. This site now builds more natural back links in a day than most people build themselves in a year!
Trying to do it yourself just seems like a waste of time, I’d rather spend the time creating something that people want to link to themselves?

Flooding the market with tons of backlinks at once is definitely surefire way to get you into the google sandbox. There are several great services (like Pauls or Angelas links) which provide 50 or 100 links a month with specific instructions on how to go about adding them which cost pennies a link but are PR4 and up.
Also make sure you’re taking advantage of all possible linking opportunities and linking in various places as you place media. Always put a link in Facebook when you add a photo on your business’ FB page. Leave a link in the text of youtube when you upload videos as well as putting in a clickable link in the video itself. Try to utilize every possible angle from text to video to audio to reach as wide an audience as you can.

it´s fairly easy to state, that tons of backlinks is a sure way to get into the google sandbox.
But how many does it take.?
A blog post gone viral, can produce up to 1500 links in less than 24 hours is that to many.?
A new theme at WordPress can give easy give 1000 new links in under 72 hours.
A good article can give 100 new links in 24 hours.
It´s also stated that new backlinks can´t do it alone, you also need a big spike in traffic. Say a 1 month old site going from 10 hits to 600 in a few days, but then again what about the viral posts, new themes and so on.
So i do believe that you won´t get sandboxed, if there is a valid reason for the new backlinks and traffic.
But a sure way of getting the sandbox is paid backlinks, and using spam services

To recover you can just go back to looking like normal and building back links at a regular pace. You would also have to redo your SEO as the previous back links would not he counted.

I am glad everyone realizes how important back linking is for search engine optimization purposes. It is not always about getting traffic to your website, it is about getting your links out there in the search engines algorithm.

In my quest to create back links and get more traffic, I made an account at a forum site and posted the links of my site. I got huge hits from there but the forum site blocked me saying I was spamming their site. I did not post more than 2-3 links in a day. Before I could reach third day of my membership, I was banned. Will this effect my ranking and site traffic? Because I checked on google, my profile on that site is listed in google search, but it also shows that I am banned. I made the mistake of using my site’s name and original e-mail id.
Also please tell me how and where can I do guest blogging?

Great article. And as mentioned above, “pumping out back links at a million miles a minute then Google and other Search engines”, definitely does lead to an unethical scenario where it becomes somewhat of a greed and rat race to simply earn cash. But if one has it under control and uses a balancing technique, then they are bound to be more trust worthy and successful. Thank you for sharing.
