Things are changing next year…

After a long and arduous think I have decided to change the payment model for CommentLuv Premium.

I can no longer maintain the lifetime updates for the plugin for a single purchase with all the new features that I have been, and will be, adding to the plugin.

It’s just not sustainable for a plugin like CommentLuv Premium.

I’m not a big fan of paying for updates unless the plugin is constantly being improved and added to which, I feel, CommentLuv Premium does in spades.

Existing customers are covered!

Don’t panic if you’ve already bought the plugin.. you bought it with a lifetime updates and support license already. Only new purchases made next year will be on the new plan.

But, it wont be just updates..

I’ve added new features like ReplyMe , redirect first comment, advanced dofollow and much more over the past year and have lots of cool things that will help to generate more engagement on your site pencilled in for next year.

things like tweeting someone when they get a reply

..and I’ve

also got some good plans for subscribed customers like a CommentLuv Directory and some premium plugins that I’ll be selling but subscribers get them for free (as long as they are active subscribers).

A video course or two too…I’d really like to get some affiliate training videos on the site explaining how to do some of the things that made me money with affiliate products this year.

All this will take some coding which I’ll be doing in December so that affiliates will be paid for every payment that someone they referred makes.

continuous affiliate income stylee.

Your feedback please!

My initial plan is to continue with the first payment at the same rate that it is now.

and then have a 6 monthly renewal for updates and the premium freebies. perhaps charge just $25 every 6 months.

what’s your opinion on that?

too much, too little or goldilocks just right? :)

and I want to offer a simple pay monthly plan for those that can’t afford the big first payment, perhaps $5 per month on an ongoing basis?

I’d really like to hear your feedback on this one so please leave a comment below and let me know…

        Directory is a great idea.
My concern is for the blogger that is just starting out and needs to get traffic flow as well as that flow being affordable. Even with a $5 p/m fee, it might be then out of reach for the ‘little guy’. Just saying.
I know another premium plugin I own and beta test for, Wysija, gives it away free until they reach a 2000 subscriber threshold so I don’t know whether its in the realms of feasibility to think about a capping system on comments p/m, for a lesser charge.
All in all, I understand your concerns for your own livelihood and also feel for the new blogger too.

And I’m thee to beta test whatever you decide to bring forth too :)

        • having a free version with a comment cap is a nice idea Martin. I’m not sure what the limits would have to be or if it would be practical.

I might have to do some research on that for what the average amount of comments received per month is for the average commentluv user.

          food for thought!

          thanks for the feedback

Oh yeah, it’ll be about thresholds, for sure.
Thing is, you want the new bloggers to really understand the value of the plugin as well as continually using it until they’re in a position to afford it.
Else they’ll ditch CL for other commenting enhancement plugins and never come back – it’s about value, benefit and ‘stickiness’.
            Well, my opinion anyway.

  3. If the plugin provides good value for money (which CommentLuv does!), I dont see why this would be a problem. Top services such also follow a similar pattern – Aweber in particular comes to mind. I would suggest offering monthly, quarterly- 6-monthly and yearly packages with a bulk discount.

You know Andy, at first when I heard the $25 every six months part, I thought I sounded kind of high. But after using CommentLuv Free for a while and now I’ve been using Premium for a bit, the features and benefits and the amount of visitor engagement it brings is astounding.

I do think the $5 a month option is a reasonable “sounding” deal, makes it sound a little easier on the wallet although one would pay more that way then $25 every 6 months ;)

I truly believe that as long as the updates and advances to CommentLuv continue to grow, then you customers should be more than happy to purchase on a subscription plan. CommentLuv Premium is weeeeeeeellllll worth it!

That being said, I still feel lucky to of received the plugin before this kicks in :D
Robert recently posted..The Car Demons Strike AgainMy Profile

    • Hey thanks for your feedback Robert.

The $5 per month plan covers the plugin purchase price and updates so someone would have to be subscribed for about 18 months before they had paid more than someone who had paid in full from the beginning.

It’ll be more like renting the plugin than buying it if they did that.

It’s nice to know that you’re ok with the pay to update model. I honestly believe it will really help to keep the plugin alive and added to.

On thought I just had on this that I’d like to add. Although this may not apply since you are planning to offer a reasonable $5 subscription plan.

But…People that aren’t familiar with the plugin or that may not be aware of how frequent and worthy the updates are, may be a little hesitant to purchase an update plan. It’s kind of like purchasing the extended warranty on an electronic device. If you can’t readily see a need for it, then it’s hard to shell out the extra money for something that “may” be needed. Just a thought, only time will tell I suppose.

But I definitely agree you need to be covered for your time and resources that go into the development and further advances of CL ! CommentLuv Premium is for sure the best investment one can make toward the next step in blogging. I would venture to say the best blogging plugin available, that I’ve seen!

Personally I don’t like “pay X amount monthly” schemes in general as I’m not keen on handing my credit card over to somebody who will then charge be indefinitely. Even if doing so is less expensive (in theory) than a single upfront payment. Maybe that’s just me?

What about more of a tiered pricing model? Is it possible to break out levels of functionality in CL? Basic? Gold? Platinum?

I totally get the issue on maintenance and support. So charge for it! If you want it, you pay for it. If you can manage on your own, then feel free to do so. Another option would be to keep the current price for the core CL functionality but throw out the upgrades for a relatively small amount (say $10 each?). In this way people could pick their own package based on what they personally value. Yet the overall cost of owenership wouldn’t keep people from buying in the first place.

A final thought which I’m sharing to be helpful although it may come across as a bit of a critique is to minimize your support costs by significantly improving the online self help capabilities. This is not specific to you, it’s really a problem with all the WordPress technical peeps who provide great services to people like me, namely those who aren’t super technical. The documentation is a bit scattered and hard for neophytes to find, navigate, and digest. I have found this to be the case with Yoast, BuddyPress, etc. (so you are in good company!), as well as almost every premium theme I’ve ever bought. If you could really enable people to figure things out for themselves your cost of service would decrease dramatically.

    Anyway a few thoughts…
Alexis recently posted..How and Why to Use and Lose the PacifierMy Profile

    • Hey Alexis thanks for your feedback. I’m going to keep the single, multi and unlimited licenses for the same price and then introduce a fee for getting updates and support as it takes so much effort to provide and simply can’t be continued for a single payment.

The monthly payment option will be for those that cannot afford the bigger single payment so I think that might be a good option for some.

As for instructions for non techs, it has been my experience of receiving thousands of emails and support tickets over the past year is that people will prefer to ask something than look it up. Many times I’ve answered a query by pasting the text from the FAQ exactly!

It’s easier to email someone to ask the time than look at your watch it seems!

      Thanks again for the feedback

Hi Andy and happy holidays to you and your family,
I am so grateful that I was introduced to CommentLuv Premium a bit over a year ago. As I have stated numerous times, the network is a great neighborhood to be in. You have always gone above and beyond when working on updates, looking for bugs, and support. I feel that you are justified in pricing it differently going into the new year. You provide video tutorials to assist anyone that might be “technology challenged” so that they can get the plug-in set up how they wish. Those tutorials would take time to create. Thank you for that. As for support, when a site runs into an issue with the plug-in, don’t necessarily blame it on that specific plug-in, it just might be another one that a person has added that works against the initial plug-in. A site owner needs to think back of when things were working right, what they might have changed on the site that might be interfering, then reverse the course they took and see if that fixes the problem prior to contacting support. I can only imagine how many support emails you probably get. That in itself would require much of your time which should be worth something.
As for how to price the plug-in going into the new year, that would have to be a pricing model that you are comfortable with, that you feel still keeps a valuable product on the market without overpricing, but is structured accordingly so that keeping up with billings and so forth doesn’t eat up all your time. I for one am very glad that I chose to purchase when it first came out. Also, you just ran a large campaign for others to still get in. I hope people were smart enough to do so this past weekend.
Keep up the fantastic work that you do and know that you are very much appreciated.

You are covering everyone that already bought the Premium plugin? Thats cool. Your payment plan is ok, but what will keep people from just getting the $5 plan since you make it available? It seems that you may be leaving money on the table with that. IMO, I would stick with the regular payment, it’s definitely worth it.

My suggestion would be different options for updates. If you want to buy it as is with no future updates, then you pay a flat rate. If you want to subscribe to updates, then you pay an annual fee. I’m not sure that I would pay 50 bucks a year for updates though, maybe 25 a year or 5 bucks a month, etc.

One feature I wold love is a way to tag people who are either part of the conversation, or your friend on social media. This way we can keep the conversation going by inviting new people to join in.

Honestly, I have already wonder about the benefits on CommentLuv. Does it really matter for engagement or SEO purpose? Probably it is installed on 99.9% of blog. But does a plugin really give you a reason to comment and express your opinion?
Carl recently posted..Super User created new blog post Internet Marketing Keywords in InfographicsMy Profile

    • the plugin was never about SEO, that was just a beneficial side effect!

the purpose of the plugin was to encourage comments on your site and reward your readers by showcasing their latest post.

it allows you as the admin of the blog to see what your commenters are talking about and gives other readers convenient links to find other interesting blogs.

it helps with traffic and with the new features added, it really encourages engagement on your blog which again, has beneficial side effects for seo.

so far, it has done an excellent job of that. you just have to look at the number of comments on each post on this site

Commentluv is one of my two favorite, most useful plugins of all time. Well worth the price I paid. However, even the best plugins can be problematic when there is an ongoing fee. With even a few such small fees, many of my beginning blogger clients find all their earnings eaten up pretty swiftly.

That’s a cool plan Andy! I have a suggestion, what if you charge them per update? Like if you release a new update today, several bloggers can buy it and implement the update while others who “doesn’t need” the update (I doubt it) don’t have to pay. What do you think? Is it reasonable? :)

Vanita recently posted..The Truth Behind Being A Famous BloggerMy Profile

    • I think the $5 per month option might be good for those that don’t earn much (or anything) from their blog.

if payments stop, the plugin stops working.

that’ll only be on the pay monthly plan though.

the upfront payment means you keep the plugin and it works forever (wordpress permitting).

the updates and support services will only be for an actively subscribed person.

if they cancel the 6 monthly subscription then they wont get updates after the 6 months have expired from their last payment.

existing members get grandfathered in to the lifetime updates though so a real incentive to get the plugin before I move to the new payments system

that being said though, the active 6 monthly subscribers also get more than just updates and support.

they’ll get access to all the goodies I’ll add to the commentluv club area like the directory, special access to plugings I make and other fancy things.

        • existing members still get updates and support but the ongoing bells and whistles are extra and part of the subscribed members deal, existing members will get a way to get this though.

I haven’t worked out the details yet but for sure, the extras will cost money for new and existing members, I can’t provide those for free because they are not free to produce! the whole reason I’m moving to the new pay model is that I want commentluv to continue to be more profitable than me making new plugins and launching those, if I’m getting a regular payment for commentluv then it makes sense for me to continue to develop and add to it.
