2013

Predicting the future is a great way to look back on this article in 12 months time and say, “˜oh yes’ or “˜miles off.’ What do the marketing predictions 2013 have in store for marketing your business?

The technological revolution is shaping how we live our lives. Society is bombarded across a host of mediums for our attention. What does 2013 have in store? Are we going deep into digital?

The Future Is About Being More Human

The coming year has more to do with brands building a dialogue with their audience by putting promotion to one side, in preference to providing information and becoming more human.

Small and medium businesses account for 99.9% of all private sector businesses in the UK, according to the Business Population Estimates (BPE). This means that there are many of us trying to find our own space, whilst in reality the majority look the same.

There are 4.8 million private sector businesses in the UK, the highest since estimates began in 2000. How do we stand out when there is so much competition?

Become A Trusted Resource

The answer is to stop being a salesman and more of a resource for your industry. The shift is going to be from selling to helping. Customers are more curious, more suspicious and more inquisitive than ever before. If you educate your customers, you build trust.

By providing information to your customers, you can deliver content and experiences that have more of an emotional connection and can add value to their lives. Look at the world around us, information isn’t in the local libraries anymore, it’s at our fingertips. The resources are available, it isn’t a new concept, just a different way to access technology.

So What Does 2013 Mean For Me?

Say goodbye to self-flattery, jargon and being “˜pitch slapped’ on Twitter,  Facebook and LinkedIn, lets champion individuality in a digital world, be ourselves and recognition by changing mindsets from selling to helping.

    Hi Mark,
“Become A Trusted Resource” in your industry or niche is an issue that all businesses need to be working on. As you stated, more people are becoming inquisitive and suspicious, therefore become a trusted resource should be everyone’s #1 rule.

By building trust with potential consumers and clients, a business will have the ability to thrive even in hard times.

When consumers trust you, word of mouth will bring you more business.

Take the business of being an auctioneer for example. They have to build trust with both buyers and sellers. Without either, their business fails. When the trust is there, it produces a stream of customers over and over again.

Also an added plus is the buyer that trusts doing business with an auction company will usually become a seller with that company. It turns into a three way win between the company, the buyer, and the seller.

    Hey Mark,

Unfortunately, it is the nature of business to be competitive. So much so, that it can be difficult to hold on to a successful product’s copyright or patent. When they smell a market, the competition often copies the product and changes it just enough to make their own. If their marketing schemes are larger, they gain the high share and you lose yours. I’ve been there!

Nevertheless, my businesses lived on because they interacted with the customers. We provided tutorials, seminars, demonstrations and quality customer service. Familiarity bread trust and brand loyalty.

    Good, informative article.

    You’re certainly right Mark,

Customers have become quite intelligent now a days, your sales pitch not going help you anymore. Instead you should focus on building your brand value by offering best services, build your reputation, offer good support service. that’s certainly going to help your business.

  6. I think a true salesman is a man who sincerely help his/her customers. However, over time this meaning has been shifted and has become pejorative. The trust is built when you sincerely help your customers. Then money will follow. If you think money first, then possibly the trust would be sacrificed.

    Thanks for the article.

  7. competion is related in business.to run a business competion is not fact if you make the Customers trusted to you.

Being trusted is prime. I educate customers to choose the best and safe products for themself. When they ask, is this brand safe (they point out on other product, not mine) ? I help them to find out. So I’ll say, yes that one is safe and legal, if I know that they are safe and legal. The outcome is, they trust me as a resource man. And many of them then buy my products instead.
So I agree with most of your article.
