hair_dry_shampooHave you always dreamed of having a long, lush hair, a la Kim Kardashian or Jennifer Lopez? It’s not as easy as it looks – especially if your hair is short or fine. But celebrities aren’t just born with fabulous hair; many of them rely on hair extensions to create those looks you see at red carpet awards shows.

Today’s hair extensions are nothing like the gnarly, painful weaves of yesteryear that created bumpy patches, bald spots or ratty looking manes. So don’t be afraid to experiment with extensions to create a glamorous look.

Kick it up a notch

Say you have a big date coming up or a swanky party to attend. Of course, you want to achieve that voluminous, shiny red carpet look, but your hair just isn’t having it. That’s when you turn to hair extensions!

Modern extensions made from real human hair can be used to add a little volume to your hair, or you can add up to two feet of length if you’re going for an elaborate up-do. You can also add fringed bangs, highlights or a few pops of unexpected color like pink or purple.

In a word, extensions made from natural hair look, act and feel real. They can be cut, styled and even colored, so you don’t have to worry about that weird, two-layered shelf look.

Easy application

In

the past, many extensions were applied at a salon, using harsh glue that could damage hair and leave visible bumps. They had to be cut out, leaving ugly, frizzy stubble. But modern extensions are easy to apply at home, without all that pain and suffering.

You can simply clip-in the extensions beneath the top layer of your hair – and they’re easy to remove, too. Store them in a plastic bag when not in use, hand-washing them periodically in cool water.

Semi-permanent styles

If you love your glossy, thick hair so much that you can’t bear to part with it, you can choose semi-permanent extensions. This type of extension is attached using a flexible, double-sided tape that lasts for up to six weeks.

When you’re ready to remove the extensions, simply apply a citrus-based hair tape remover that safely takes off the tape without damaging your own hair. No cutting – or stubble – necessary!

Styling tips

Styling your sexy new hair is easy. You can use almost all of your normal hair styling products, such as hair spray, gel and mousse. You can even blow your extensions dry and style them with hot curling irons. Just make sure to test any products on a hidden section of hair before you use them.

Don’t let your own hair’s limitations hold you back; if you want to rock some Beyoncé barrel curls, Eva Longoria locks or just a sleek simple style, hair extensions can help you. And because you can create your own looks at home, you don’t need a superstar’s salary to achieve that Hollywood appearance.

Some amasing styling tips. The celebs who have the best hair always keep their screts to themselves and it’s frustrating!

Extensions are a short term fix to great looking wavy hair if you cant be bothered to wait for your hair to grow to the right length.

  2. Oh, so complicated. When I have some important date I usually do a mask of burdock root oil extract overnite. At the morning I wash out the rest, wash my hair a few times and I have so crazy volume like after hairdresser)))

    Hi Melissa,

I used to spend at least 10 minutes a day on my hair ( I am a guy ), but now, no more, after so many years of putting that amount of time in, I am done. I can only imagine what girls go through. Not really on topic, but hey…

One of my college-aged daughters got extensions last fall. I know they look cool, but there’s just something annoying about having these plugs at the roots of your hair!

  8. Great post. I think that with all the other pressures of life, women are looking for better ways to keep themselves looking good. If you can skip the salon and give yourself salon type treatments at home you can look good for a portion of the cost.

The best way to have a great looking hair is to keep it healthy and use less chemicals. Using natural shampoos and staying away from direct sun light is a must.

One of my friends has been asking hair extension recently. It is relatively expensive, but the result is sublime. You can advise around you.

  16. I had hair extensions once and I hated them. They were the hair lock ones where they clip the extension to your hair using a metal ring that pinches your hair with the hair extension. They pulled on my hair and some of them started to fall out. The worst part was not being able to brush my hair though. I think they best way to get full shiny hair is to have a healthy diet, use good chemical free hair products, and rinse your hair in cold water. Doesn’t make for a nice shower but it keeps the cuticle from opening up which can make your hair look frizzy. Temporary hair extensions are nice to have for parties and special events but even those can be hard on your hair too.

  17. Hi Melissa
I have never used extensions, till now. Some of my friends have them, and use them often, for work and going out. They really add to your hair quality and look excellent. I’m going to search out some extensions that may suit me, and give them a shot. Although I do agree with some previous commenters, that underneath such extensions, we need to keep what we’ve got naturally, as healthy as we can.
    Thanks for writing about it.

Great post. Hair extensions really are such a great way to add volumes (and length obviously!) to hair. They get a big press for hair extentionists that don\’t put them in properly and cause damage to the scalp…..if you do want to get extensions, always question your hairdresser very carefully and establish that they fit them safely….in a way that enhances your hair.

It is important to take all criticism as constructively as possible to a certain extent. I say certain because quantity (the number of people) will count over the quality (the importance of an individual to you) in this regard. Don’t however take all that is being said and attempt to please everyone, the end thought that counts is really yours.

  22. I’ve always wondered how those women always have such long, luxurious hair. I’ve never thought about trying extensions, but I’m thinking about checking into it, but I’m afraid that to get a really high quality product, it is probably too expensive. Worth looking into I guess..
