Choosing the right product to promote for your website can be a daunting task. If you do not choose the right affiliate product to promote you may miss out on some potential earnings. You really need to learn the difference between a good and bad product, and a product that your website visitors want. There is no point offering them something that they will not buy. Doing this is to simply bad business.

The first and foremost question you need to ask yourself is “Who is my website visitor?”

Who are your visitors, male, female, college educated, age group, a buying crowd, and so on. You need to be familiar with the person you are trying to sell to. If you do not promote the right product to the right person you will be wasting your time.

Tips on how to choose the right product to promote as an affiliate marketer:

When you are building a website for the first time, or optimizing an old one, you should have a plan. This plan should include affiliate products to promote for your website. You should, in essence, find your niche first and then go out and see if there are affiliate products to promote. If there are no affiliate products to promote and no way to make money for your niche, then I guess you need to find another niche. Below are some tips on how to choose the right product to promote which will in turn help you build your plan for your website.

Research what other websites are promoting?

If you are in the website game, you should be familiar with your competition. Simply go to Google and search for the keywords that you rank for and investigate your competitions websites. Here you will be able to see what affiliate products your competitors are selling. This does not mean they are successful, however if they have been promoting the product from long time, this could almost say that that product is successful. Many bloggers now days share everything about their business, including what they actually sell to make money. I picked up one of these tips on another famous blogger’s website about a product that is sold, immediately signed up for it, and placed the banner on my website. This simple little tip is making me $20 a day. The reason is that the product converts well and his irresistible to the traffic.

Research on Clickbank.com to find the right product

I like to go to click bank and look for products related to my niche and then see what is selling the best. You can do this by sorting your search results by choosing the highest gravity products first. I also like to finding products that provide recurring income so I can make one sale and possibly get more than one commission.

affiliate right product to promote

Researching the actual affiliate product to promote

Once you have done all this research, I highly recommend the you actually buy the product the yourself. This is the best way to sell a product. It shows that you have confidence in that particular product and are willing to fork out your own money for it. This will also give you an advantage

when writing a review on the actual product. You might think that this could send you broke, but I guarantee that it will bring you more sales. I actually bought George Brown’s Google Sniper product as the curiosity got the better of me. I am now also very pleased I did purchase it now as I really did learn some great “golden nuggets”. Now I think I am qualified to sell this product.

Use the product yourself and test it!

Not only do you purchase it, but you need to test it out to show people that you are using it. This is not always possible but I can give you an example. Recently I purchased a product which was something to do with WordPress themes. The whole story is explained here “from Socrates to Elegant Themes“. What happened is that I use Socrates, a premium WordPress theme, on my website. But one day I changed the entire theme and wrote a post about it…In this case I had purchased Socrates and Elegant themes. I received comments and emails from visitors saying they did not like the change for this particular website, even though Elegant themes is a great product. So I changed the theme back, but in the process people had checked out the Elegant themes website and the Socrates website and some purchased the products. I guess I didn’t really plan it that way because I just wanted to test out a few different themes. Every product that I buy ends up costing me absolutely nothing and it makes me money.

Can your affiliate convert your traffic into sales?

Go to the product page and see if you are even tempted to buy the product. Are these people going to convert your precious traffic for you? Why do you think and is Amazon.com is one of the largest companies on the Internet? It is because they know how to convert.

Case study examples

If I used this website for an example of what I would sell here I would have to ask myself questions:

  1. What do all of these website visitors have in common?
  2. Why did they come to this website?
  3. Why did they come back to this website?
  4. What products would they like to buy?

These are just some example questions that I would use and here are the answers.

  1. The website visitors at Comluv.com all have the comment love plug-in which is predominantly used on a WordPress installation and now also a blogger installation. Therefore they are all Webmasters either building blogs or websites. Some website visitors may be beginner’s and some may possibly be very experienced.
  2. They probably came to this website because they were curious about the commentluv plug-in, or they came to register their plug-in.
  3. They come back to this website because they enjoy the community and learn from other bloggers that are doing exactly the same thing as them.
  4. They would like to buy products that will help them improve their blogging business. For example they probably would be interested in WordPress plug-ins, WordPress themes, getting traffic, and so on.

Please let me know in the comments section how you choose the right product to promote for your website?

  1. Choosing the right product to market is indeed a crucial decision, not from the money point of view, but also from the point of view of reputation of the website. Just as a good product can enhance the traffic and reputation, the opposite can be done by marketing a wrong product, wrong in the ethical or contextual sense. So, overall, what we all must take care of what is being affiliated by our websites.

Knowing how to choose the right product to promote is essential to online business success. Let’s not forget that there are literally “thousands” of products out there and promoting a useful and valuable product, in my opinion reflects just as much as a marketers credibility is concerned. It is very difficult to gain credibility, but very easy to loose it. Thumbs up

  4. It does seem that building a community-based website is more difficult than building one meant only to attract hits from Google. Both seem viable as a long-term strategy, but a site built around its community is certainly much more valuable.

To that degree, I agree that that you have to use your own product and like your own product in order to feel good about selling your product to your community. The selection shouldn’t just be whatever pays the most, but something you could actually feel good about recommending to your blog friends.

  5. Assuming that most of us with websites are doing this to make money then the right choice of product is very important. I’m all for people following their passion etc but you must understand that some hobbies/passions just don’t monetize effectively.

When someone comes to your own website you usually have a clear idea of why they came and what they were looking for but when you do a guest post it isn’t always so clear. I think your final questions give someone doing guest posts a good idea of what to be looking for.

I promote physical products that everyone would use in their day to day life. Just looking around your home can give you lots of good ideas for products. Then it is worth checking out Amazon to see whether your ideas have some merit in the general marketplace. Then it boils down to good old fashioned keyword research to see what will actually drive traffic and sell.

This means you get $28.82 for each sale you make and if you sell 2 you will get that amount times two.

You are getting 75% of the original sale price so the vendor is getting 25%. They must be using this sale to get optins or other backend sales.

The Grav is high at 122 and that means it is a good seller… But you must still investigate as it could be a good seller with a high refund rate…

Also if it does not mention an AVG rebill then this is only a once off sale with no recurring commissions…

Sometimes it is better to get a product that gives you 50% of the first sale and 50% of any recurring rebill sales or backend sales.

  9. There is so much that goes into a successful website, picking the right product is only a small part of the challenge – but an important one. You touched on something as well in your intro that is very important – knowing the demographics of your visitors – and sometimes you’d be surprised at who is actually visiting your site. Quantcast is a free website that is very helpful in giving you an idea of a websites demographics (either your own, or a competitors). I had forgotten about it until recently but it is a great tool. Knowing your audience effects how you write your content as well as what products you should pick.

Hey Mitz, you always have some great posts. How many blogs do you run? I see you everywhere and you’re always giving such great advice. I like the way you did the Q&A at the end of the post. It’s something that people don’t put much thought into most of the time – they just react on impulse. Nice checklist. Thanks!

      Hi Ileane
      Thanks for the compliment! :)

It has taken me a long time to learn all of this and I still learn everyday. I love what I do.. I have about 20 websites… Trying to cut down though as three or four have become monsters.

Having a few websites is great though…because we all know that you should not keep all of your eggs in one basket…10 is more than enough though..

I have spread my websites by using Adsense, Affiliate marketing, Amazon, and now maybe CPA offers…

This is some pretty in-depth information. You’re exactly right. You do what to pre-sell and consider what your audience would be interested in, but you also would like to highlight the benefits without sounding too sales pitchy.

Checking out the product allows you to give a more solid review.

  12. thanks for the clickbank tip. must look into that ASAP, even if I’m not that interested in promoting products, it’s still nice to see who’s in your niche

    Hi Mitz,

I had looked into clickbank before but I was always thrown by knowing what products would sell and which wouldn’t. We sell web videos so naturally it is hard to sell that online through clickbank, or is there a market for it? I really would love to know more as affiliate marketing is something I am very new to.

  14. For sure, choosing the right product is essential.

So often, i will be viewing a website where it is blatantly obvious that the user has never tried the product and doesnt actually know anything about it. Straight away it results in me leaving the site and not going back.

  15. I like to get to know the products I’m featuring really well, and research them fully. It also helps when you are passionate about the topic you are recommending products on. The fact is though, you are lucky if stuff you are passionate about actually sells!

A good indicator is if there are lots of products targeting the same customers. That is an instant indication that there is a market willing to purchase items to solve their problem (whatever that may be).

Yes I am very much into customer service as I have always run my own businesses. I always used to remind the staff that it was the customers who pays their wages and without them…well???

That would get them to think about what they were doing and treat the customer with more care.

This is true for everything we do… everyone is either selling something or working in a business that sells something and someone has to buy it.

I use a combination of sources to find products: Clickbank, Google Trends, Amazon, Ebay and even good old-fashioned printed magazines.

You have to be careful though that your final choice is not just a “flash in the pan” otherwise, by the time you’ve done all the hard work, there’ll be zilch, nada, NO visitors!

It is very much important to choose the right product to promote because it will affect your personal branding. You have to be careful in choosing one because it will leads you down.

  22. Great article and apparently this is exactly what we are going to see for the upcoming months. flexibility in choosing the affiliate platforms and combination of networks, as well as the products.

The ever increasing coupon business could be holding a niche for affiliates that are willing to work hard for their money, promoting services and other under-promoted products. we @ wisemarketing.de have just opened up an amazing opportunity for affiliates to sell customized websites, not exactly a product (it’s more a service really) to get it out there using traditional (yes, combined affiliates is really the key) affiliate networks.

    Any comments would be appreciated.
