Being seen as approachable and doing our bit for the communities we serve, stamps the business mantra of it’s not all about me, it’s about you.

Here is the dictionary definition for altruism:

unselfishly concerned for or devoted to the welfare of others

Perception Towards Our Brands Changes

What I’m trying to highlight here is if we believe in a higher purpose than simply promoting the products or services that we represent, the perception of our audience towards our brands changes to one of approachability and having a personality that is true, believable and above all else, honest.

This then moves to a brand helping others and making other peoples lives better. Look no further than the Waitrose ‘Community Matters’ initiative where the retailer supports good causes by shoppers deciding who receives the £1,000 monthly donation.

This then moved a step further this year by introducing the new ‘grow and sell’ initiative whereby school children are encouraged with seed kits, equipment and instructions to take initiative by setting up stalls in stores to sell produce.

Jump To Influencer

Rather than this article becoming an advert for Waitrose, what it highlights is that any company that takes an altruist

approach makes a giant leap to influencer. When a company takes the time to be active and understand what’s important to the world around them, you then position your company as one that not just sells within the community but also serves it.

The future for brands is to put the ego to one side and leave this to the few who are happy to constantly promote themselves and shout out on the different platforms about how good they are at what they do. It’s time to stop saying, ‘work with us,’ but rather ‘how can we help?’

Make Better Lives For Others

The altruistic brand has an audience who listens and happy to share experiences and make others lives better lives. Playing a wider role within the community is key to being seen as a trusted resource.

A good example since 2012 demonstrating a selfless spirit is the Dulux ‘Lets Colour Fund’ set up to transform and bring colour to communities that would have otherwise been left and unloved. This represents a brand not purely showcasing how good they are (overtly broadcasting), but demonstrating how useful they can be (generating trust).

Become The Brand Others Warm To

The future success for companies is to become brands that others warm to and want to get to know better. We can all do this by contributing to the areas that we serve, or in the words of Winston Churchill:

“What is the use of living, if it be not to strive for noble causes and to make this muddled world a better place for those who will live in it after we are gone?”

Lets embrace helping others and our brands to play an integral role to serve a better purpose than purely selling.

    Mark,
Quoting Winston Churchill on a Sunday morning is fabulous! Don’t you think that blogging is how many of us are contributing to “make this muddled world a better place”?

Whenever I have a question, I go online and search for influential bloggers who can give me their answer based on their experience or education. I trust them because they’re willing to share their knowledge with me. We both get something out of it — with or without a monetary exchange.

  6. Hi Mark,

I think that the more you provide content and serve others, eventually they will begin to trust and like you. When someone trusts and likes you they eventually buy what you have to offer.

So not only are you helping them…but eventually you will make those sales that you want to. Sure it may take a while to build that relationship and trust…but in the long run it will be worth it.

Most likely you will have a customer for life. Thanks for sharing this inspirational post.

    Mark,

Becoming the Brand Others warm up to is a huge part. Social media is becoming a very cold place. So many people are going the automated route for their post, welcoming new followers, auto direct messages, buying fake followers and likes…the list goes on!

Just putting a splash of your personal touch could do wonders. With so much of what I mentioned above happening so often, it doesn’t take much to make a good impression and stand out from the crowd.

  10. Helping others and serving the community are great initiatives which should be taken up by more brands to improve their image and change people’s perception about them. In the race to make more money, the big brands often overlook altruism.

  11. Twitter:
From Waitrose point of view, it helps that they have a loyal customer base to begin with, that use them in the knowledge that they only sell the highest quality products. By promoting community initiatives they are branding themselves as the sophisticated Co-op.

For small business, one of the best ways to create brand is by content marketing. Every industry can impart free practical advice for which its customers continually seek, especially in this ate of standards and government regulation. By giving industry advice without selling, you are seen a being useful.

    Hi Mark,

This is a great post, thanks for sharing this with us!

I think that if you provide enough quality content and surround yourself with like-minded people on a daily basis, then you will be able to influence the people around you since others start to know, like and trust you more. Eventually you become an influencer in your niche, but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get to that point and of course to a willingness to help and provide massive value to other people. It’s not only about the money, but rather helping people solve a specific problem or nee and then the money will also come!

    Keep it up!

Serving our family memebers, then extend that service to our community, afterward to our Nation and finallly Globally to our brothers and sisters is the duty of each Human Being. Not just as promoting our brand, but to make a difference and create a Legacy. Great article Mark!

I think people have more power to do good in their communities than they realize. Some of the comments above mention how doing things for the community can increase trust in your brand. In addition to that, I believe that, no matter what, it’s important to give back to the community in which all of us live.

  16. Serving the community is great, it is also the responsibility for everyone. It is what makes the world a better place to live, isn’t it?

  17. Twitter:
This reminds of Neil Patel, the internet marketer or the marketing icon who was able to create a huge brand for himself. A 30 minute conversation with him could cost about 2000 dollars. Yeah, that’s what i call branding.

  18. Twitter:
    Hello Mr. Masters,

You are talking about a change in mindset here. It is a huge change that will take time. To become less egotistic? I don’t think this is really possible. What is realistic is to find new ways to combine personal interest with community interests. Yes, we can and need to change the hierarchy and put community first. Promoting a way of life that serves the community, identifying people’s problems and solving them, these are all good things that must be done. But only if they are connected in some way with our own interest.

    Have a wonderful day

Great article, Mark. Entrepreneurs are perfectly suited to bring the idea of community service to the forefront. By showing others the projects they set up or support that help others, they can demonstrate how we can all make the world a better place. By placing the needs of others first, we can generate a following of not only associates but potential loyal customers.

    Hi Mark,

Great piece here where you speak so much sense. I try to influence with our own blog, but find readership hard to gain organically. And we DO put our egos to one side, making the attempt to inform our readers than that just tell them things. Becoming a trusted resource is probably the hardest thing to do – you have to have your readers coming back time and time again, listening and absorbing everything you are saying and perhaps even arguing with you (it’s much better to have a conversation!).
Excellent points here from you though – I’m off to write some more blog posts for our site. It’s great to have a but of inspiration.
    Cheers

I’ve been trying to get this company to move towards that direction. Austin is very much a close knit community. Everyone is involved and active and I am getting our company to be the same way. We are beginning with supporting local businesses by giving away gift cards to local businesses. I have been given permission to start collecting information about local volunteer opportunities and getting the agents involved. I just started but things are looking very positive!
