I like using Premium themes myself. I’m using Thesis right now, but it is a lot more complicated than other themes I’ve used. There seems to be a lot of Hoopla over Thesis right. The Thesis structure is definitely taking me a while to get used to. I’m coming along though.
I haven’t heard of Genesis so I may have to check it out now. I like for my themes to be easy when it comes to customizing, but I also want a clean look and feel.

Just checked out the Genesis themes and they look really great. It would help if you can tell me some things though. Can the width on theses themes be easily changed? ie., a setting in the options panel or even .css where I enter a value for pixel width. Does it come with many widgets to insert content where I want it? ie., a widget for lets say, content left.
I’ll browse the site to see if they have a free demo I can use before buying. Who knows? I may just buy the whole theme pack.

Sean Grimes recently posted..Daily Income Network Scam Review
I can’t say I have tried every free or premium theme out there. There are some decent free ones, even a few with their own framework of some kind. However, they don’t tend to be updated or patched as much as a premium themes. I know some people start with a free theme to see if they like or will stick with wordpress, and then upgrade to a premium theme down the road. I have also seen some really nice looking premium themes. I guess it’s just a matter of trying out the demos and finding the perfect one for your needs.

Free themes can look quite decent. I started out with a free theme myself but found out that it had lots of flaws later on. Most of them are not obvious from the start, but when you try to customize your website a bit more using a free WP Theme you will probably find obstacles in your way.
Free themes are usually just there for the show, promoting better premium themes. You are bound to upgrade sometime if you are serious about your website, I guess.
Twitter: GIJoh_com
Premium themes are normally not the number one choice of newbies because it\’s not always free. However, if you are one of those serious and willing enough to shell out more money as a future investment for your business website, then premium WP themes is the answer to your needs.

Even though premium themes can cost a bit they are still a good choice. I think the genesis themes are pretty awesome as they have a very crisp look. I guess any premium theme is premium for a reason. I did way too much customisation to mine, after it all I realised I changed 90% of the original them and could have just written it myself without having to pay for it. Anyway great read.

I’m just getting to know WP. I’ve got it on a site, but have done little to it. I”m guessing for someone like me, who is just beginning, a premium theme is not the best option. But it helps me to know what is meant by ‘premium’.

A premium theme is the way to go. There are incredible themes out there and they are relatively inexpensive.
Developing a custom website 5 – 10 years ago required a ton of time or multiple thousands of dollars.
A great WordPress theme requires maybe $20 – 30 and a couple hours. It’s way more flexible too!
Twitter: TheMainlandBlog
Great post. When I moved my blog to WordPress.org I evaluated several different premium themes and ultimately settled on a theme from Theme Junkie based on price and features. I wanted a theme that had built-in SEO optimization and easy ways to promote subscriptions and sharing on social media.
I definitely agree that the theme MUST have a live preview – especially if it’s a paid theme.
I would also advise against using any free themes as they often have hidden links in the footer that are often encrypted and require you to purchase a license anyway to decrypt it.

The WordPress repository is generally a good starting point as the themes there have passed the wordpress teams review. I’ve come across the odd premium theme with errors in it or some pretty poor that coding.
Its worth taking a look at the theme’s demo and looking at the source code, or if you don’t understand it try running it through w3c validation, most of them don’t pass completely, but its useful for highlighting potential issues.

I use a free theme which I heavily modded by learning PHP. However when it comes to free theme; I totally agree with all the points mentioned especially with Customization and Flexibility. When I started; it was a nightmare because whatever I wanted was not right. I wanted something on left and in a free theme it was at bottom.
I even tried some nulled themes just to explore the difference. I don’t use it that’s different story.
In short if you want to use Free theme; learn some PHP and CSS. That is pain but the thing you will create will be awesome. Else; to start blogging by not wasting time – go for Premium.

Great points. Premium themes are often very good. Some of them even let you remove the ads from the footer so that makes it professional. But there are equally good themes out there that are free and professional looking. Some of the premium theme makers have their own free ones for you to use provided you leave the footer ads intact.

Thank you for the useful list. I suggest you add focus on security (in terms of programming best practices) as something to look for in a premium theme. Not long ago a large WP theme provider was found totally unaware of the TimThumb vulnerability which is still responsible for so many blogs out there being hacked. One should expect from a premium theme provider to engage early if not proactively in regards to security issues – after all the benefit of paying for a premium template is knowing someone’s business and reputation is based on it, thus making them more likely to keep it updated and safe.
What I look for in a theme is easy to optimize with clean code. The ones you have to pay for are usually better than free themes.
I used to use the free themes on my sites, but after I saw how great all the premium are there is no turning back. A lot of great plugins too for WP so for the extra few bucks it is definitely not skimping on a theme. I also quit smoking with the e cig btw , now most of my sites are electronic cigarettes with WP of course lol

Judging from this article, a REAL premium theme might be hard to find, but I do agree that it should have all amenities mentioned in article.
This is a nice breakdown. I think many people overlook a few of these points and end up either getting ripped off, or having to deal with a ton of code when they may not have a clue about CSS, PHP or even HTML.
Some of the most important aspects of a premium WordPress theme are the amount of developer support, as you mentioned, and the valid code and markup that that developer has made. With the constantly changing landscape with WordPress updates and new versions of popular plugins etc, it’s imparative that users have the proper tools and support in place to deal with these variables.
After all, WordPress was created with community in mind, to being people together. It is only rit that if you pay a premium price for a premium theme that you are offered premium support.

Personally I would recommendThesis because of the flexibility.
I’ve also used a Woothemes theme but found it almost created as many problems as it solved because the limitations of the theme meant that, to get it how you wanted it to look, you had to get involved in lots of CSS coding that got quite messy alongside the premium theme.
Thesis gives you the best of both worlds because you can customise the look to some extent through it’s interface, but it’s also more of an ‘open book’ when you want to do more serious customisations and dive into the code – which you will if you’re serious about developing your site over the long haul.

Some look really good but behind the scenes they can become problematic.
Timthumb.php has to be one for my nightmares, as a page speed tech I just dread working with it. Most premium themes seem to adopt it. Personally im a big fan of Thesis because of how light it can be and will only load what needs to be loaded and it’s great for learning more about wordpress if you want to.
Genesis is another good theme, but I do favour thesis.
I wrote a post, well its part of an ongoing series about setting up a wordpress blog and the above point are highlighted in greater detail.
My advice be carefull about what you buy because you might just end up buying a lot of themes, stick to simple themes and build on top of theme, as someone mentioned already child themes are a great way to build a blog also.

Yes for sure, premium themes gives full support than free wordpress themes. My pick would be to use an Thesis or Swift which are good looking and clean white.

I have tried free wordpress themes in the starting days of my blogging career but later on I felt that we get much advantages and support in premium theme over free theme so I switched to thesis.

Thanks for the post. I just started a website using WordPress and this is my first attempt at doing this. It seems to be a great tool if you are willing to get into it and work. I think it is important to make sure that the premium theme has the ability to create pages, not just use the templates. It really helps out. FYI, I am using nevada theme. Thanks

Hi Karlos, I am struggling a lot on finding the right theme for my site. I have access to all of Elegant Themes and most of Studio Press Themes. But there are just so many that it is hard to find one that you really want.
