I’ve written 3 posts about eating in the past 3 months.
No, it’s not because I love eating ice cream, nachos, cheeseburgers, and cake.
Yes, I do love those things (and I continue to eat them on occasions sprinkled into my life).
But really, I’m writing these posts because people in my life are eating differently.
And their lives are changing because of it.
The Human Diet
As a health nut, I’ve experimented with several ways of eating. I have friends who swear by veganism. I’ve seen the raw diet cure diabetes. People attempt Atkins, Slow-Carb, No Carb, High Protein, yada-yada-yada.
Then I discovered the Paleo-diet, or what I like to call “The Human Diet.”
Dogs eat dog food. Fish eat fish food. Humans eat human food.
Makes sense, doesn’t it?
Finally, my life got easier.
Yes, my symptoms of stomach discomfort, bloating, chronic stuffy nose, depression, mental fog, and body composition all improved.
No, this isn’t what made it easy.
My life got easier because I had discovered a way of eating that wasn’t just based on an individual’s advice. It just sounded right.
You see, the Paleo-diet is based on eating what our paleolithic ancestors ate before agriculture began 10,000 years ago.
As hunters and gatherers, we hunted animals and gatherered fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.
There were no twinkie trees. Having not domesticated cows yet, we were unable to milk wild post-partum cows. We were also unable to cook the raw, unedible grains found in nature.
Who knew? Eating the way that my genes had involved to eat resulted in my body expressing health, not symptoms and disease.
In my chiropractic practice, I don’t push the way of eating. I do hint at it if I notice even a slight desire for greater health.
In the past few months, I’ve had more and more individuals eating “The Human Diet” and getting hooked! For nearly any symptom or sign of disease you can imagine, the diet seems to help!
Whether you want to look more handsome or beautiful, have nicer skin or hair, have more muscle, less fat, and less bloating, rid yourself of symptoms of asthma, allergies, constipation, or just reduce your risk of inflammatory diseases such as heart disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, “The Human Diet” works.
Look …
I am deeply satisfied when I’m able to help someone’s life. It inspires me and brings me purpose to my life.
You don’t have to believe me. You don’t have to be ready to change your lifestyle. You don’t have to do anything … yet.
But remember, when you’re ready to get healthier for the purpose of living a more fulfilling, happier life, you can have it.
And only action will let that happen.
Robb Wolf is one of the pre-eminent experts on the Paleo-diet.
I have 3 copies of his book, The Paleo Solution, in my practice that I circulate to patients when they’re ready to make a move.
Here is a guide I’ve assembled to help with the transition.
Don’t take my word for it about the Paleo-diet. But damn, the results speak for themselves.
And don’t hesitate to ask me to help coach you through it. As I said, it would make me happy.
How might your health improve if you try eating like a human?
As a Health Coach with an undergrad in Anthropology, I love the concept of the Paleo Diet, but I wouldn’t go 100%. There is too much research of the good that a little bit of grains do for you (and I won’t let you take my morning oatmeal away from me!).
If you wanted to go full Paleo, technically speaking, you’d have to avoid things like avacados, quinoa, and other great New World foods.
That being said, I’m mostly Paleo, and love it!
Twitter: humble_observer
says:
Fair enough Paul.
I agree, oatmeal is hard to give up and isn’t too bad of a grain. (Although, nuts, seeds, berries, with almond milk and honey does make a nice replacement).
I also agree, in that I consume avocados, vinegar, cooked meat and vegetables etc.
The theory is why I love it so much. Plus I haven’t seen a diet get results so much of the time.
I’m glad that you enjoy being “mostly Paleo” though. Jealous of your anthropology major and the War Child organization you supported. Sounds like a worthy cause.

Hey Dr. Christopher,
Loved the post. I had to sneak over and check out the beginner’s guide which also led me to the manliest salad ever and I have to say, THAT spoke my language. (Not the video, the picture!)
I was raised to eat healthy (although we have always been big on whole grains), and that really effected me growing up. It really does make you feel so much more… alive!
But I can see that some changes really are in order. And reading on your blog (and seeing the manliest salad ever) has me ready for that change.
Not so much of a stretch. We eat lots of salad, pasture raised chicken and fish from a local fish farm around here and my salad bowl normally makes people balk at the size.
Hey, thank you for the post and the links. Lots of resources to use and learn from!

One thing that stuck with me for awhile, is that if it didn’t exist 1,000 years ago, then it probably isn’t healthy for you.. all of these frozen processed foods that you see in the grocery isle are just horrible for you.
I was never much a fruit and vegetable eater, one tip I found to make it easier to eat them was investing in a blender, it’s amazing how much better fruits and vegetables taste when you have them blended with a little bit of ice.

I did the paleo-diet or caveman diet when I first had problems with IBS. I lost 50 pounds! The trouble is I don’t like vegetables or fruits all that much (meaning I don’t like them at all , and eventually added corn and rice back into my diet because I was losing too much weight.
It’s great for what ails many.

I’m happy you lost weight with it Shawn! Did it help your IBS?
Not getting enough calories is a common problem.
Usually I recommend a few things:
1. Eat more. (Especially protein, which satiates you).
2. Add beans. (Tim Ferriss recommends the slow-carb diet which is very similar to Paleo, but with beans). If you do use beans, I recommend soaking and sprouting them to make them more digestible.
Most corn is genetically modified and destroys eco-systems because farms raise corn as it’s only crop. I tend to stay away from it for these two reasons.

Thanks for the tips about the beans. Usually they cause me a lot of distress. I eat protein until I’m sick of it.

I find this very interesting. I have PCOS and it is very difficult for me to loose weight, even though I am active and try to eat healthy. I have maintained my weight for 3 years with that, but can not seem to get it to go down anymore. I will defiantly look into this. I love veggies and fruits.
Twitter: humble_observer
says:
Hi Erica,
Although using nutrition specific for conditions is not my specialty, I do vaguely remember from school that PCOS is strongly correlated with insulin resistance, increased blood sugar, and diabetes. It is also an inflammatory condition.
The paleo-diet naturally keeps your body very sensitive to insulin since you’re body will get most of its energy from fat like it should, not sugar. It is also inherently anti-inflammatory.
Please look into this. I would be surprised if it didn’t help. And let me know when it does.

The human diet looks very interesting. The problem is it is so hard and the advent of agriculture, made civilization possible. so part of civilization is almost eating the foods we produce with agriculture. But from an evolutionary standpoint eating healthier is might be eating this diet.

I am fascinated but not convinced. I guess the best thing would be to actually try it before I shoot my big mouth off, but I have a life-time of being told that most fats are bad (saturated as in bacon) and then the Paleo diet comes along and declares war on grain. I understand that some people are gluten intolerant, I am sorry for that, but this diet seems to suggest that all grains are bad and then we add in dairy as taboo and the whole thing begins to sound strange. Please understand I am a chef by profession, cooking with butter and oils, thickening with flour for sauces and soups are an integral part of my daily work.
A good part of this is poor marketing strategy IMHO. Glorifying our caveman ancestors who had a 30 year life expectancy at the expense of their descendants who learned to farm and domesticate grains and…live to be 70 is not necessarily a credible story.
On the other hand I completely agree with Nikki about processed foods. Junk food, should be assiduously avoided, as well as the more chemically altered “lite” and “fat-free” substitutes which are laden with all kinds of chemical question marks.
Maybe instead of a notion of “Human” diet we could talk more about the reasons why eating this type of diet is beneficial to your body; what it actually does for you in terms of digestion, building healthy cells for xy or z. The bottom line is that the whole process is still a mystery. A trip to the USDA website will convince you that much confusion still exists, they won’t even endorse vitamin supplements.
Thanks for listening to my rant.

I greatly appreciat this comment Michael. OK, a few things ….
1. In chiropractic school, I had several friends who were going through both the chiropractic program and masters in nutrition program. Because of their education in the nutrition program, most of these individuals now adopt the Paleo Diet.
One of them blogs here about the research behind the Paleo Diet:
http://coactivehealth.com/healthy-recipes/committing-paleo/
I agree, some people are less intolerant of grains or dairy than others. It’s now being realized that intolerance is NOT a yes or no question, but a question of how intolerant you are on a spectrum.
2. Individuals living in the paleolithic era died in their 30′s from trauma and bacterial contamination (especially water), not from an absence of grains.
3. I am so happy you brought up the USDA. PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION to the STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK. They discuss expanding markets, financing, and job opportunities before they ever get to nutrition and health. While health is one concern, they’re interested in several different aspects to their operations.
Here is the USDA’s vission, mission, and strategic framework, from:
http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usda/!ut/p/c5/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os_gAC9-wMJ8QY0MDpxBDA09nXw9DFxcXQ-cAA_1wkA5kFaGuQBXeASbmnu4uBgbe5hB5AxzA0UDfzyM_N1W_IDs7zdFRUREAZXAypA!!/dl3/d3/L0lDU0lKSWdra2trIS9JSFJBQUlpQ2dBek15cXhtLzRCRWo4bzBGbEdpdC1iWHV3RUEhLzdfUDhNVlZMVDMxRzdMQzBJQ0VMOU9PVDIwNDYvc2EucmV0cmlldmVjb250ZW50/?PC_7_P8MVVLT31G7LC0ICEL9OOT2046005915_navtype=RT&PC_7_P8MVVLT31G7LC0ICEL9OOT2046005915_navid=MISSION_STATEMENT&PC_7_P8MVVLT31G7LC0ICEL9OOT2046005915_parentnav=ABOUT_USDA
4. The purpose of the Paleodiet is to increase health as much as possible so that you can live the longest amount of time without sufferring. Symptoms of going on this diet include ridding of many diseases, not only intolerance, but heart disease, diabetes, stroke, inflammatory disorders etc. The reason this is all physiologically true is because the Paleodiet is anti-inflammatory. Grains and dairy have inflammatory sugars and proteins that essentially punch holes in the intestines, where most of the immune system resides.
5. The results speak for themselves. If you’re ever interested, try it Michael.
Nonetheless, I appreciate your opposition as it creates good discussion.

I’ve been doing the Paleo diet for a few weeks now (albeit with a few minor changes) and it’s doing me the world of good. I originally decided to start it as it was recommended on a candida related website, and in alot of ways it’s similar to the candida diet. I lost weight within the first week (weight loss wasn’t the reason I went on the diet but the loss of a few pounds is always welcome!), and I feel much less tired during the day. I don’t know if I’ll be able to stick with it long term as I find it very restrictive though – I don’t mind giving up sweets & junk food, but I love dairy products like cheese & yoghurt which can’t be THAT bad for you.

It’s amazing how I read “it’s doing me the world of good” and I immediately smile.
Keep it up as long as you can. I’d say adhere to it 5-6 days per week. If I get the opportunity to eat a meal, if someone brings me cake, if family makes me pasta, I’ll eat it.
I find the cheating allows me to 1) satisfy cravings and 2)remember why I eat paleo. Because I’m always so uncomfortable after eating any grains or dairy.
Certain cheeses and yogurts are milder. The issue in dairy is the sugar (lactose) and the protein (casein) which cannot be digested by most people. I’ll be very curious to hear how your body responds to them when you reintroduce them into your diet? Do remember, aged, drier cheese tend to have less lactose, as does heavy cream and greek yogurt.
Keep me updated Karen?

Its interesting that you mentioned your symptoms ( stomach discomfort, bloating, chronic stuffy nose, depression, mental fog, and body composition )disappeared. The paleo diet sounds like a gluten free diet, which might also improve these symptoms. Bloating, discomfort, stuffy nose are common gluten intolerance symptoms. Depression and brain fog could also be explained by low iron levels through malabsortion caused by gluten intolerance.
Had another look through some of the comments. Eczema is also another symptom of coeliac disease/gluten intolerance. Also if you have been coeliac for some time it can lead to lactose intolerance. Which is why dairy would also cause problems.
Just an idea…..
Twitter: humble_observer

Fiona, I agree 100% with your assessment. Part of why I believe it works is because the MAJORITY of people arer gluten/lactose intolerant (some less so than others, but still intolerant). Grains and dairy are inflammatory.
I remember reading in “Eat Love Pray” by Elizabeth Gilbert how she had found out that 30% of Italians in Italy are gluten-intolerant. That stat blew my mind. Some people say that more than 50% of us are gluten-intolerant.
I most likely an gluten-intolerant myself. Thank you for sharing this comment.

As long as it’s grass-fed and organic, not sure what negatives there are except for the fact that you’re eating another life. Hi Victoria. I know … there are only twinkie trees and ice cream mountains in our dreams. Vegetarians are doing a lot of good. Unfortunately, I’ve found that vegetarians tend to be more nutrient deficient than someone who eats this diet. If I’m treating a patient, their scar tissue is getting cleared out, and their symptoms aren’t getting any better, it can be that they aren’t getting enough protein to rebuild their muscles.
I’m not sure where you’d get your protein as a vegetarian. The issue with soy is that it’s SO processed and should be fermented. The estrogens can mess with both male and female reproductive systems. Cheese has a lot of antinutrients that can inflame the gut, causing things like leaky gut syndrome, etc.
I would seek out a good clinical nutritionist. Over the web, I’ve heard that John Berardi (http://www.precisionnutrition.com/about/) is very good. Let me know of any way I can help.

Don’t think edamame is as processed (if at all?) as other soy products, although it is still a bean and has some anti-nutrients to mess with digestion. But wouldn’t worry too much about that one. Cheese is your main suspect.

Great post, had heard of the Paleo diet previously but had never checked it out. So I did, can’t say as I agree to everything in it but it follows most of the non-inflammatory diets that I’ve heard and read about. I have been studying vitamins, nutrition, herbs and natural healing for about 15 years now. My dietary beliefs are NO fast foods or processed foods period. Nuts, berries, low G.I. vegetables and fruits, 50% of diet veggies (raw or lightly steamed), lean red meat no more than once a week with one day a week being vegan. No white foods, such as flour, bread, potatoes, white rice etc. so my diet is fairly close to the Paleo diet, except I stay away from shellfish mostly because they’re higher in toxins from water, and I do like my grains staying away most of the time the gluten grains. As far as the time involved, I find it quicker to run across the street for a bag of cut up vegetables for lunch rather than going for fast food, plus I feel a lot better. By the way, this diet took me about three years evolved into, junk food and processed foods or just as addicting as drugs; exactly what that food companies want.

I suppose if you were to be vegetarian and only consume fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds (avoiding grains and dairy), you’d be safe. But then there’s the question of getting protein. Through an education nutritionist, this should be doable.
Eating Paleo does allow you to get all necessary nutrients without the help of a nutritionist. Just be educated about your decision.

Imagine a dog, sitting at your kitchen table, eating sauteed vegetables and steak with a knife and fork. While a dog is a carnivore and should consume mostly meat, you’d probably say that he is not eating like a dog.
Imagine a human, unwrapping the plastic off of a twinkie before he pops it into his mouth. Or imagine a caveman twirling spaghetti around a fork.
Since you are human, anything you eat will make the statement “eating like a human” true. But, are the genes in your human happy? Are they healthy? That’s the big picture.

I am just about to set up a diet and health site with the emphasis on healthy eating and the latest research on diet, nutrition, sleep and exercise at http://eatingplansforweightloss.info/ (not quite up yet) and checked out this book on Amazon, it has an awesome number of excellent reviews! I think I will have to buy this book as well to add to my expanding knowledge. I have just come back from the movies and people have walked in with gigantic tubs of popcorn and the couple in front of us kept swapping a big bag of chips and a bag of lollies between them swigged down with a super size soft drink – we have forgotten the art of moderation entirely. I now make my own cakes and biscuits (my partner has a sweet tooth and it is better than buying store goods with 25-50 ingredients). People who have eaten junk food for years at the expense of great, fresh, healthy food have forgotten just how good you can feel when the majority of your diet is natural. A great diet with occasional treats will keep you healthy as well as happy. My mission is to help people reconnect with all things natural and healthy, while still enjoying occasional treats.

Thank you for sharing this great post with us. I’ve found a lot of useful information here.
After reading this post I asked myself what the reason is that some people don’t have problems when eating grains, dairy products, and others have.
It’s so true that when you’re ready to get healthier for the purpose of living a more fulfilling, happier life, you can have it.

Happy you’ve found it useful. That’s a great question to ask … why don’t some people have OUTWARD problems when eating grains and dairy products? (I added the outward). Systemic inflammation can go undetected without our symptom radar catching anything.

Yes there are. I have lent out all of my Paleo-books; there are resources everywhere in the Paleo Solution and The Paleo Diet. If you go to pubmed.gov and search “cordain”, many research articles will come up.
If you can’t find any, let me know and I’ll put some resources here when I get the books back.
Food has become a commodity and not just the simple necessity that it is.
Eat generally well, in reasonable amounts, with a broad range of foods and move around every now and then. It’s actually quite enjoyable to do these simply exercise and you will feel better as the years go by.

I lost about 11 pounds in first 30 days I was on paleo / primal. Very easy to stick with it, I’ve had to make some adjustments to increase the carbs but it’s a great way to eat.

Hi Dr., I appreciate the article on the Paleo diet. I have heard of it but, haven’t tried it yet. I do believe that, like some of the other posters, that balance is a key to healthy living as well. It seems that a lot of good health food stores are starting to go by the wayside. Even more with organic stores. Sad. I recently decided to lay off of drinking so much pop or soda. Since doing that I’ve noticed a difference in how I feel. I drink more healthy water now than anything. My energy level has increased.
I will have to differ with you on the dogs eating dog food though. My dog will eat about anything I put down for him. He likes it all…:) Thanks again.

Hi Kevin,
Happy you appreciated it. The diet’s results speak for themselves. Hope you try it some day. Very happy you stopped drinking pop/soda. The artificial sweeteners are horrible, especially to the liver. Do a pubmed.gov search and plenty of research articles will pop up.
Your body (as will any organism) will choose survival in the short term over health in the long term. This is why when we see sugar, we can’t help ourselves to eat it just as a dog will eat anything to put calories in. The evolutionary fear of “Will I be able to eat tomorrow?” is inherent in all of these behaviors. Unfortunately, food is all too accessible for Americans today. Hence, the obesity problem.
Let me know if I can help in any way.

I’ve stepped away from counting calories and such. I can never last on strict diets. I simply cut out processed foods and non fibrous bread. I stopped eating fast food and cut out soda. I don’t watch my fat intake but eat only the good fats like nuts, avocados, and olive oil. I’ve lost quite a bit of weight just staying away from bread and sugar. It doesn’t feel like I’m even on my diet when I’m not counting calories.

Hi will this method only bring back illness maybe that our Ancestors suffered ? Seems we live a completely different lifestyle now and our bodies needs have changed
Joe davies´s recent blog post ..Diet stories a typical day

Hi Joe,
What illnesses were you thinking of? As far as chronic disease, there have been no signs of them in our paleolithic ancestors, as observed through epidemiological studies and paleontologists. Osteoarthritis was commonly found. Also, many of our ancestors died from bacterial infections and trauma.
But again, notice the difference. Today, we die from chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, strokes, etc. While some say it is because we are living longer, living to 70 or 80 is still 2/3s of the way to our genetic potential (Deepak Chopra says we can live to 120, without pain, without sufferring).
We do have a different lifestyle today. NO, our body’s needs have not changed as our genes are exactly the same as they were 10,000 years ago.
Does that make sense?

I am a great believer in the low GI system, it gets good results, and it is healthier. I have suffered from IBS in the past, partly stress related. Cutting out bread really helped me a lot.

Hey Dr. Christopher,
Thanks for sharing this! I think the next level is not only to eat the right kind of food this diet prescribes, but also the right quality. I’ll be experimenting more to buying food directly from small farms that use totally natural methods.
Otherwise, we still get a lot of harmful chemicals into our bodies…

I am so excited! I have been trying to go totally raw for some time. So for about a week I was raw and I have noticed my health improving! I used to have some serious female problems but the raw diet for humans significantly has made a difference! Thanks for your comments on the human diet!

Greenhosting … the raw diet can be good in certain ways. What I always say is, if it works, it works. Malnourishment can be an issue without the eye of a dietician or nutritionist.
I’ve also read that certain nutrients are more bioavailable (absorb more easily) when cooked such as carrots and tomatoes.
Whatever gets someone healthier makes ME happier.
