I don’t know about you, but I have not utilized Google’s RealTime search option at all. After searching the depths of my little brain for a topic to write about, I took to Google. I mean, who doesn’t turn to the almighty big G when in need, right??
So, I found the realtime search option and a whole new world opened up for me. Let me explain to you a couple of things I discovered and how I used realtime search to get right here…yes, right here writing this post.
What is RealTime Search
In a nutshell, realtime gives you up to the second news, blog, hot topic results from around the world. It literally changes right before your eyes. Google gives you the ability to pause the activity stream..like DVR’s that allow you to pause live tv.
You can type “booty shaker” in the search box and bam…you are served to the second results for your search term. You can then make those results even more relevant by pinpointing specific locations,(of booty shaking), times, images, videos, etc.. And if a conversation took place via Twitter or Facebook, you are also given the option to read the full conversational text.
Can RealTime Help Your Linkbuilding?
As I mentioned earlier, I was in need of some content for my own blog. As I began playing around with Google RealTime search, I decided to try keywords. I have to say that general keywords, for example, SEO, gave too many results from the same sources.
So what I thought would be cool to see was if I could find people who needed help with their blogs. I typed in, “need help getting blog traffic.” I found a lot of results I could scroll through for the day that showed some people specifically asking for help gaining traffic to their blogs. I’m off to the rescue!!
I can now visit their Twitter profiles, follow them and respond to their requests for assistance. Obviously I’m gonna send them to my blog!! It also led me to tons of NEW blogs to visit and comment on, therefore generating more links for my place and driving more traffic to my own blog. After I did that search, I figured maybe I could find some relevant places to guest post..uh hhemm…how I got here.
I simply typed in “in need of guest posts” and “looking for guest posts.” And what do you know, the number 4 result was right here from Andy! There were TONS of results for bloggers looking for guest posts. It was a virtual hot bed of networking placed right in my lap.
Another thing I found? Content of mine that had been scraped. I input my name in the search box and the results returned showed me everywhere my name was mentioned on the web. Needless to say, I promptly contacted the rip off artist and gave them a virtual smack in the head. Not really, but I got my content removed from their site.
I also noticed that my blog is mentioned many more times than my actual name. So, in regular Google search results, I rank number 1 for my name. However, in realtime results, my name is second to my blog name mentions. Just found it interesting is all.
The Bottom Line
So to answer the above question, yes! realtime search is a great opportunity for linkbuilding. It’s easy sometimes to keep hanging around the same blogs that we adore and love, but in order to get real reach, we need to expand our horizons. When Google gives us great tools to make it quicker and easier…grab it. I intend to experiment more with realtime search and rankings. Imagine if we could have our analytics in reatime?! Information overload? I don’t know, that’s another post altogether.
I have included a video below for you to see how realtime works and it’s short, so watch it! Now it’s your turn.
How have you used realtime search or have you at all?
Has it helped you with your blog?
Please tweet and share this if you’re a rock star! (and I know you are.)

There are many uses for Google Realtime I have discovered. Building links is one, absolutely. But so is positioning yourself as an expert in your field. As you suggest you look for people who need help building a blog. And off you go! To help another soul and continue building your expertise in the eyes of the world wide wow.
Thank you so much for the post and the tips. The comment is late but that is because from the day you mentioned it, I have been playing and learning. Thanks again!

Hello and thanks for a good post. Ive been using real time search in a way similar to what you have described. It really helps find out what related content people are searching for. I have one question. You say:
“I can now visit their Twitter profiles, follow them and respond to their requests for assistance. Obviously I’m gonna send them to my blog!”
Wouldn’t that count as spam for some people? I mean we all know that a random tweet )esp with a link) from someone we know nothing about is seen as spam by most people. I even block people who do that. How do you deal with that?
Thanks.
