Are you familiar with the latest Internet statistics? The numbers indicate our world is significantly impacted by the web’s power. Let me share some numbers with your from Royal Pingdom:
- 1.73 billion – Internet users worldwide (September 2009).
- 234 million – The number of websites as of December 2009.
- 126 million– The number of blogs on the Internet (as tracked by BlogPulse).
- 1 billion – The total number of videos YouTube serves in one day.
- 2.5 billion– Photos uploaded each month to Facebook.
- 200 billion – The number of spam emails per day (assuming 81% are spam).
- 27.3 million – Number of tweets on Twitter per day (November, 2009).
- 2.6 million– Amount of malicious code threats at the start of 2009 (viruses, trojans, etc.).
These numbers are astronomical and they are continually increasing! How do you compete in a virtual universe of billions? The answers are simple, but sometimes difficult to execute.
1. Blog about your passion.
If your passion is cracks in sidewalk, own it! Your desire to share will naturally accelerate momentum and drive people to your site. You can not fret over fears of negative feedback. Grab hold of the dreams stirring in your stomach and make something happen. Take your place in the blogsphere.
2. Follow a social marketing and blogging guru.
Following the advice of the experts is a proven inside track. They are willing to navigate your course and help you avoid danger. How many major catastrophes have ruined nature and humanity? All they had to do was listen! Don’t be a BP of the blogsphere. Listen to the leaders: Darren Rowse at ProBlogger, Stanford Smith at Pushing Social or Lynne Gabriel at The Entrepreneur Chic, just to name a few.
3. Join an ACTIVE blogging network.
Aligning yourself with others makes it difficult to knock you out. Blogging groups are great places to actively promote your blog, make friends and share your personal passion. Blog Frog is a supportive place to let bloggers know you exist. It is also a wonderful place to join niche communities.
4. Work backwards.
Where do you want to be in five years? Where do you want to be next year? Where do you want to be in six months? Setting goals is directive thinking. Acting upon goals is intentional action! Determining where you want your blog to be in the future and working backwards, will help you determine your priorities. Harness your destiny by sending out your lifelines today.
5. Enjoy yourself!
Blogging is not for everyone. If you are doing it to make money, stop, close your blog, re-evaluate and proceed with the authentic you. The latest trend may be blogging today, but if your heart is not it, it will not sustain you tomorrow. Spend your time doing what is real to you. Time is one thing you can not replace.
Take action today for a better blog tomorrow!

@chaplaindonna great post. I really love those statistics. Mind if I use them myself. I’m new to blogging. While I have been online since 2000. I am now blogging about things I like, and not trying to follow trends to “make money”. Someone wiser than myself, much like yo in fact said that if I write about what I like (am passionate) about everything else will follow. So I’m now doing just that and I’m happier for it.
Thanks.

The numbers are really staggering once you take the time to look at it. Wow, we’re talking about billions now. I heartily agree with your fifth point here, Donna. If one doesn’t love blogging and is only doing it for the money, then it’s not for them. It’s only too easy to get burned out like that.

It is easy to burn-out when your passion for a task is lacking. I think many people jump on the popular band wagons because they are uncertain of or afraid of their true calling. There is not anything wrong with trying something new, but use wisdom before making a commitment.

I would hope people join social networks for than just good traffic. Getting to know your readers is important. You can learn their needs and how your blog or products can meet those needs. It is easy to become distant and go through the motions to get a good search engine rank, but real love and dedication to your readers is also important. Finding a balance between business and compassion is a good starting point.
Learning and doing all of the necessary things to become a GREAT blogger is not easy! That is why you have to love it and your readers!

I think one of the best ways to speed up the process of taking your place in the blogspher is through blogging communities. Being an active member of one or two communities is the way to go in my opinion. It gives you more chance to focus more time and energy and make it a success, instead of joining too many and spreading your efforts top far and too between.
