Going Green

Many don’t realize how simple going green really can be. We usually think about huge changes like getting rid of our cars or completely eliminating the reliance on an electricity grid, and while these changes would likely have a huge impact, they’re very hard to facilitate. Instead of tossing out huge, life-changing ideas about being eco-friendly, I’ve put together a short list of simple changes that will have a lasting effect on your immediate surroundings and lay the groundwork for a more effective, environmentally friendly lifestyle.

CANVAS GROCERY BAGS

Canvas grocery bags are a growing trend that will have a huge impact on how much waste finds its way to landfills. Because several bags are used in a single trip, using cloth bags will save energy in their creation and the waste from their use. There’s a hidden benefit for you, as well, however. These bags will hold three times as many items, meaning that you’ll need to make a third fewer trips from the car to the kitchen when unloading. See, that’s a nice perk, isn’t it?!

CUT BACK ON WATER USAGE

Clean drinking water can be hard to come by in certain parts of the world, and places like California have placed strict restriction on water use regarding washing cars or watering lawns. By watering at night or turning the faucet off while brushing your teeth, you’re greatly reducing the amount of water you use. Try shortening showers, turning the water off while lathering up, or only running the dishwasher when it’s absolutely full. These small changes will go a long way.

GROW OR PURCHASE ORGANIC FOODS

Organic farms are becoming quite popular as many are beginning to understand the dangers associated with pesticides and chemicals in regards to produce. Consider a small vegetable garden as a nice stress release and a great way to get the organic veggies you need when implementing the Dukan Diet menu

into your weekly routine. The plants will help produce clean air, as well, so you’re benefitting in every way possible.

IMPLEMENT A “NO CAR DAY”

By choosing a single day of the week in which you do not use your car, you’re reducing your carbon output from car exhaust by 1/7. This is a huge reduction when you consider the effects of millions doing the same. You’ll save money on gas and also learn to patronize places that are close-by.

USE POWER STRIPS OR UNPLUG ELECTRONICS

Many believe that simply turning off a television or laptop means that it isn’t using power, but this is completely false. Most of our electronics these days rely on stand-by modes which do require a bit of juice to operate. Unplug your electronics to reduce your monthly energy bill and the amount of power you’re using in your daily life. If this becomes a hassle, simply invest in energy efficient power strips that will turn off electronics with a single switch.

The practice of reducing your ecological footprint can have lasting effects that will impact the environment for decades to come. Being responsible for our daily actions is the first step in maintaining a healthy ecosystem for future generations to enjoy. When you make these simple changes, begin sharing your experiences with others. They will likely have ideas that they can share with you, and as we all raise our environmental awareness, changes will begin to take hold. The earth is ours to take care of, and when we act responsibly, we’re proving that our benevolence and foresight far outweigh our destructive habits. Remember, without our planet, we’re lost. Take care of it!

CLOSING

Everyone can participate in green activities. Personally I embrace the ideas of only purchasing eco-friendly porch furniture that can add some green elements to the house! If each of us can make one simple green contribution a day, then together the result will be significant. Cheers for a better environment and a better World :)

Right now it’s a “best practice” to do all these things listed above. Soon we will have to do that because of the toxic environment we’ve been creating for years

  4. Interesting post, I like it. I even use some of your tips already, like the dishwasher one, I only run my dishwasher when it is full of dirty dishes.

  5. Great post. I really enjoyed reading it. It really doesn’t take a lot of time to take care of our environment. Make the right choice and that’s simply it! People just tend to become lazy and don’t want to ‘think’.

  6. Great post,

Thanks for sharing these tips for good environment for our planet. One thing is true in this blog post we should start as soon as possible to take steps for save our planet with lot of ideas which we are using in our life almost on everyday.

All tips are very nice but i like these some lines too much in your blog post which you mentioned like that “”IMPLEMENT A “NO CAR DAY”” which will help to reduce carbon in air.

  7. Those are really good tips. But it is very hard to change people’s behaviors, and the final solution is to green up the whole industry which is from the product end. Try to make the factory to make environment friendly product. That is it.

  8. My mom used to tell me stories of how transportation was back in the days and that in some part of the country, it’s like a “no car day” everyday, they used to walked miles in going to the market and other community place.
It made me realize that our part of the world must have been a lot greener during those times but I guess new technologies really has some advantages and disadvantages.

We replaced our old refrigerators and freezers and all of the incandescent bulbs. Our electric bill went from about $300/mo to under $50. It’s nice to help the environment and save money at the same time. :)

  10. Good tips, especially the power strip one! I’m also passionate about turning off lights if you don’t need to use them! Especially during the day time- let the natural light into your windows instead of keeping the shades drawn.

  11. I love the idea of growing your own food. Not only do you do your bit for the health of the earth you eat more healthily. Snacking on peppers, tomatoes, blueberries, peas, beans… is much healthier than what we often snack on. And it is fun to see seeds grow into food.

  12. We recycle quite a bit. Much more than we used to 10 years ago. Probably mostly because the city provides recycle bins for us and picks them up every week. Too bad all this recycling and green movement didn’t come about sooner than it did. Maybe technology has improved in the green and recycling world like everything else.

i really like with idea about “no car day” and change to “bicycle day”

  14. Everyone in this planet should start using sustainable energy. I really interested in the “No Car Day” idea. Every country should implement this more often.

  15. Love the picture with the grass on the roof tops. Is this something that helps regulate temperature? Or what is the benefit of grass on the roof? Handy if you have a landscaping business.

  16. Going green means we are concerned with our environment. I’m so glad that everyone is taking action to save our planet Earth. It’s never too late there are many ways to stop climate change and make our lives better. :) No Car day will lessen air pollution which good for our health and our environment too.

  17. If we revive the idea of liquid thorium fluoride nuclear power, we can keep our power strips plugged in and use incandescent bulbs to our heart’s content. If we legalize hemp, we could have eco friendly disposable paper bags at the grocery store.

  18. As important as organic farming is for the preservation of our eco system. Eating local is ofter a more affordable, nutritious way to do your part. Food that ripens on the vine, will give your life, more time.

  20. Great tips, it’s important to make small changes to our lifestyle now to ensure that bigger changes aren’t required later on to preserve the environment.

Most people don’t realize how much electricity they are wasting in their homes or offices by not complaining equipment that will be in use for several hours… or longer. A while back I found a online test that showed how simply keeping your entertainment system (large TV, DVD player & stereo) plugged in when not in use was costing the average user over $21 a month. How much more would it be for an office with a dozen or so computer stations over 4 to 5 weekends per month?

Another trick we use in our office is to keep the blinds closed over windows that face the Sun during the day so as to reduce the amount of heat we have and ultimately the power used to cool our office.
