The guys at JSKIT have launched a major update to their commenting system, it’s now called “Echo” and it looks sooo much better!

echo

Head honcho of community and product strategy Chris Saad (site) sent me an email a few days before launch offering to let me have a first peek at the system so i can modify CommentLuv to work with it so the last two days have been playing with code to get some echoluv.

commentluv-echo

As you can see, there is the luv to be had on Echo! If you’re logged in (via openid or other) then you have to put your site URL in the section where it says “add another site”. CommentLuv will take the last link in the list as the URL it uses to fetch the posts.

A logged out user will see this..

Some things to note:

Put the JSKIT widget as high up the template as you can and put the CommentLuv one as low down as you can, probably on the bottom of the right sidebar so JSKIT as a headstart with fetching the comments and adding the comment form.

Don’t use the WYSIWYG editor for your comments, it’ll stop CommentLuv from working on the form (who uses fancy formatting in a blog comment anyway?)

You need the JSKIT commenting system on your blogger blog if you want to use CommentLuv

I love how you matched our look and feel! :)

When are you going to use Echo on here though Andy?

You know, thats a good idea! I’ll have to figure out how it will integrate for the sub blogs but I’m sure I can add the option for people to use it here.

glad you like the look. I am quite pleased with the whole look, might even save me the trouble of trying to write a version for Disqus because now jskit looks just as good, if not better than theirs (plus, they use iframe for the comment form so it makes interacting with it a real chore using javascript!)

      thanks for coming by!

I recently installed the JSKIT comment system (ECHO) on my site and I don’t have the commentLuv button. What’s wrong?

please visit the download page and install the plugin again. there have been some changes.

      • Sandy says:

I installed mine today, did the changes not go through? Comment Luv is not showing. Also, several regular commenters have emailed to say Echo is a pain in the butt. I can’t find the code to uninstall it from my blogger blog. I did see JS-Kit comments and removed the code but Echo was still there.

Any advice you have for an html novice would be greatly appreciated. I also wish it was easier to change the colors without a big long code.

Sandy: you can easily remove jskit by removing the widget from your dashboard and then saving changes. once it’s gone, it shouldn’t stay on your blog because the code simply isn’t there. Try pressing ctrl+F5 on your keyboard to do a hard refresh of the page.

  5. SBA says:

I hope you (or Echo) have fixed this problem:
“Don’t use the WYSIWYG editor for your comments, it’ll stop CommentLuv from working on the form (who uses fancy formatting in a blog comment anyway?)”

I take exception since I do use fancy formatting and even wrote a post explaining the common html allowed in comments and hence encouraging others to go FANCY! LOL

But seriously, do you expect the blog owner to warn all reader to NOT use WYSIWYG editing? So I hope this is on someone’s fix list.

SBA: the issue with wysiwyg is that it places an iframe on the page to take care of the extra fancy bits and it is nigh on impossible to access the DOM of an iframe which has an external source. It’s not because I don’t want to , it’s because I cannae change the laws of physics html !

I understand what you say about wysiwyg comments but in my travels, I have seen very very few commenters take advantage of it.

First off – love your work and keep it up. Also, no denying that you are up against constraints beyond your control. Still, i had to laugh at that last paragraph… “…in my travels, I have seen very very few…” It reminds me of puzzled programmers in the early 60s not seeing the point of developing fancier compilers that abstracted code further from the machine. I mean, like, who wants it? ;-)
Things change, i know you know that. Commenting is just one narrow aspect of the evolving online experience, yet its use is probably growing at an exponential rate. Chances are good that richer means of expression (beyond text) will be in demand big time.

I am now currently waiting on JS-Kit to get my comments transfered over to the JS-Kit database in the meant time I think I followed your instructions Andy but still fialy to see the CommentLuv goods.

It seems like every time I try to use these third party commenting systems it’s more of a hassle than the actual reward, I am at a point with my blog and it’s size that it’s becoming impossible to rely on the basic commenting system in order to comment back.

I love the CommentLuv concept and as you know wrote numerous reviews and did a large study on the results of using CommentLuv on my blog, if I can’t get CommentLuv integrated with a solid third party commenting plugin I fear that something will have to go. :(

The last comment plugin I used was unable to be integrated with Comment Luv so I had to cut that one out, now JS-Kit seems to be more of a time consuming issue with Echo at this point than it might be worth, I am staying strong and trying to be patient I just hope that I can get CommentLuv integrated.

I will also say that turning off the WYSIWYG editor in order to have CommentLuv show up might not be a fix that’s worth it to me, people enjoy the WYSIWYG editor which is why it was created. I would have to agree with SBA so far.

As for Echo I have mixed reviews from my commentators thus far, most either find it confusing or simply do not like it. They need to be patient so I can tweak it and see if these issues will be resolved.

I appreciate where you’re coming from John, I know it seems a hassle to put these 3rd party systems in but once they’re in, they’re done with and you can carry on as normal. If you contact jskit about your troubles using their support site, you’ll see that they go to great lengths to help their users. I understand the position they’re in though, they have hundreds of thousands of members and it must be a full time job to just read the emails let alone answer them!

Re wysiwyg: the iframe that is used for wysiwyg is sourced from outside the site which makes it impossible to manipulate with javascript. it’s a security thing and will not be fixed by anyone who wants to protect from cross domain scripting vulnerabilites.

each system takes a little getting used to, imagine how you felt when you first saw your WP dashboard, I bet it was a little daunting and strange at first but, now that you’re a crazy amount of comments popular blogger, you feel right at home in your dashboard. it’s the same with jskit or other comment systems, give it a few weeks and you’ll wonder what you were worried about! (I hope :)

take a look at this jskit/blogger/commentluv tutorial, it goes over some good stuff on how to make sure your site gets the luv

thanks for all you do in regards to talking about commentluv, I read your posts and your comments often while I’m at work. A lot of good feedback there, wish I had time to comment more but every time I click reply, the phone rings for another delivery and the screen gets replaced with the customers details.

I installed Comment Luv on my blog and Echo. My readers hate this system. I’m not fond of it either. First of all, Comment Luv doesn’t appear on my reader’s comments – at all. Secondly it makes my blog load way too slowly – especially when you click the comments link. By the time it loads, most readers are gone.

Then my readers have to go through sometimes 2 log ins just to leave a comment on my blog – which they’ve told me that they HATE. Also, their comments have been “eaten.” I constantly have 2 different areas that report a different number for the amount of comments left on a particular post. Some reader comments have been “eaten” somehow. And I do not like that I can’t delete an individual’s comment if it is inappropriate (such as spam.)

I stopped getting email notifications of new comments on my blog when they appear (which is an important time management tool for me.)

I’m so disappointed. I expected Comment Luv for Blogger to work the same way as it does on WordPress blogs. I signed up and tried to install CommentLuv to encourage readers to leave more comments on my blog. Instead, they and I are getting headaches, and it’s encouraging them NOT to comment on my blog. I am so disappointed.

I do like commentluv plugin. Unfortunately in my case it is not very helpful as I comment via mobile (it doesn’t link to my post). I thought of bringing this point to commentluv developers. I hope they will come up with some solution
