How to Create a Profitable Blog

Most people would like to create at least a little revenue from their blog. Whether it’s just a small amount to cover hosting bills or it’s a large amount to enable you to quit your day job, we all want to see some return on our investment.

The first step to making money from your blog is to get some visitors or “traffic”. Their are literally hundreds of ways to generate traffic, one of my favourite ways (SEO) has been blogged by a comluv member here:  ”Traffic via On Page SEO

Once you have traffic flowing to your website, you need to monetize that traffic. The best way to monetize traffic bar none is to recommend them a product. It doesn’t matter whether or not it is your own product, it could be a product you are an affiliate for. The most important thing is that the product is of a high quality standard and you will make some money by recommending.

Now you need to funnel your traffic into buying your product. The way I like to do this is to create a page that follows the following format.

Note: I will be using a weight-loss product as an example.

Attention Grabbing Headline

Your first goal when someone visits your web page is to grab their attention, if you fail this step you’ve more than likely lost that person forever. If you need help with your headlines Copyblogger has a full section dedicated to exactly that.

Example: “From Geek to Freak – How I Gained 20 of Muscle”

Understanding

Once you have the users attention then you have to emphasis with them and let them know that they’re not the only one with their problem.

Example: You could tell a story of how you, or an associate was overweight for five years and was frequently bullied.

The Offering

By now you should have established an initial connection with the reader, it’s time to let them know that there is a solution to their problem.

Example: “That’s when I found out about John and his ’six pack abs course’ and more importantly I discovered losing weight is possible.”

What it Will Do

At this point the reader is aware that there is a product on the market, but they still don’t know exactly how this will benefit them. In this part you need to explain (in as much detail as possible) how they will benefit from this product.

Example: “Through the use of a revolutionary new system John will guide you from your current state to one where you can be happy with your body. Finally you will be able to go to the beach without feeling ashamed.”

What the reader needs to do

Lastly, and possibly most importantly is your “call to action”. This is where you tell the reader exactly what they need to do. Whether it be opt-in to a newsletter, sign up for an account, buy a product. It doesn’t matter, the key point is to make it clear what you want the reader to do and give them a reason why.

Example: “Are you ready to lose weight today just like me? Buy John’s ’six pack abs course’ by clicking here.”

Bonus Point: Create a sense of urgency.

Creating a sense of urgency is a great way to boost sales by encouring people to stop procrastinating. A simple way of creating urgency is to add something to the offer but limiting it to a specific time period. Here’s an example, building on the example above.

Example: “Are you ready to lose weight today just like me? Buy John’s ’six pack abs course’ by clicking here.

PS. Join TODAY and recieve a FREE one hour consultation with me. ”

As you can see the is a rock solid model for creating pages that generate money. The real test now is to see whether your past attempts feature all these elements.

Spot on advice. When you are first starting out it can seem quite daunting to have to continually create captivating content over-and-over again, but stick with it, it really does get easier…

I personally don’t see how offering a product makes sense when you are running a general blog. What would you offer when your website is about news and such?

  5. Excellent overview, the tricky part is to do all that without sounding like an infomercial. I think many bloggers and internet marketers take this format to the extreme and end up sounding smarmy which people catch on to right away. To really create a profitable blog you have to be able to use all these techniques in a subtle way that sounds more like you are trying to help people than take their money.

  7. Thx~ this was straightforward. I will tweak things here and there; not into time pressure selling or inauthentic empathy (not suggesting you promote these).

Sometimes I like to ask people to turn off their computers and stop reading all this manic, getting-going-or-you-re-going-to-miss-out stuff. But that’s my niche, and I’m sticking to it. I apply the recommendations a bit more subtly, but I apply them, I suppose.

It really helps you pull those ‘traffic drawing’ ideas out’ve thin air, also, when you have some sort’ve schedule to releases, and possibly a specific subject. Kinda narrows the field down. It’s all about niches after all, having and refining a routine, providing something people want over and over.

Anyway, just a reminder to not be too overwhelmed when thinking of “what am I going to write about now!?” Some times you just need to narrow your view and look at what they’re already interested in on your site.

    Good stuff. Thanks!
