I’ve always said that guest blogging works and it has been echoed throughout the blogosphere by people that know a lot more about SEO and promotion that me and after checking the stats for this site to make sure that things were going OK after the server move, I discovered that there are multiple posts by bloggers on this site that are right at the top of the search results for really popular terms.

phew! I could keep going but all this copy and paste stuff is making my mouse arm sore!

There are literally hundreds of approved contributors registered to ComLuv.com and there are more registering every single day. I have to be strict on who I let in because I allow guest bloggers to write about their own blogs subject so I have a few criteria that a guest blogger has to meet before I can consider them to be a writer here.

You can see the requirements in the dashboard if you’re a subscriber and there’s a convenient button below them to apply. In case you’re wondering, here’s a brief rundown of what’s needed to be guest blogger on this high traffic, high pagerank site.

• You have an avatar from gravatar.com associated with your email address
• You have the CommentLuv plugin installed and activated on your site
• You have completed all the fields in your profile
• You agree to abide by the guest blogger guidelines

There are lots and lots of users with lots and lots of different server configurations so each time I release an update, a new issue arises that needs to be fixed. Don’t worry though, there aren’t many more updates to do! I am nearly on top of it now and there’s only the problems with w3 total cache to sort out.

Try the 2.90.6 version

I’m using the latest update 2.90.6 on this site now and I would really like it if you could try it on your site before I send it to the repository for mass downloads.

If you can, please download 2.90.6 here and install it to your site. You need to first deactivate the old one, delete it and the upload the new one. It should work just fine and there should be no danger of it messing anything up, I just want to get some feedback on this new version (good or bad) from a few people before I force loads of users to update again which happens whenever I upload a version to the repository.

I am particularly interested in hearing from people who have a caching plugin installed, once you install the plugin, clear your cache and then try a comment whilst logged out and then try a comment here using your url and please let me know in a support ticket at http://support.commentluv.com

The move is over!

After a few 15 hour days at the keyboard, the new site is here! all housed on a new server and rocking a new theme from Studiopress. It’s got bells, whistles and even a few custom nipple tweakers in the shape of ajaxed google analytic reports for guest bloggers.

Time to take a day or two off work in the shop

I’m completely whacked! I’m going to be quiet this weekend and only do the night work in the family business so I’ve only got 6 hour work days for the next 2 days. The computer will have to wait!

New theme, new plugins, new new new!

I’m going to have to create a new theme for the new version of the site which always fills me with dread. I am not a designer! and I don’t want to pay someone to do it for me because that always ends up being a minefield so I’m going to go down the good old path of premade premium theme with some hackery done to it.

The theme

I’ve never been disappointed with Studiopress themes because they’re gorgeous, fast to load and really extendible. They’re especially good at being modified without actually having to do any destructive coding which is good because you can update them without killing all your mods.

I intend to do a fair bit of modding to it, mainly to make it fit nice with the ads and other bits of Comluv that I’d like to keep.

The plugins

Lots of plugins I have here now are going to have to be rewritten because they were originally designed to be run on a multi-site type of install and they’ll break a single site because of all the specialized functions or menu positions.

Ooh, that will be a minefield! It seems I can’t just make the edits needed to make it work. I know I’ll see lots of functions that I will just need to fiddle with and make better.

The databases, oh the databases!

Currently, this site uses 256 databases. Yes, you read that right, 256! It’s a throwback from when I allowed people to start a blog here and over 2000 people did which led to 2 years of pain and trauma!

I have a big job ahead of extracting the single database that houses this site, merge it with the global users database and meta values and then install it to a standalone WordPress install and then do some tricky bastardry on the post content and htaccess to make sure that all the images that were referenced from /blogs.dir/1/ work with the normal /wp-content/uploads/ that will be used on the new server.

Guest bloggers?

Yes! this site has got a wonderful bunch of guest bloggers who are enjoying the benefits of publishing to a high traffic/PR site and there have been some great posts lately about everything from fighting allergies to using PLR products to how to recover from the Panda update.

I will be shaping the new theme to give maximum exposure to guest bloggers and I’ll be refining the custom guest blogger plugin that I use to notify authors that their article has been published. It may take a few weeks to get fully configured but I am hoping to make the new comluv a place for authors to find new readers and for readers to find new authors.

Dashboard Locked!

I’ll have to lock up the dashboard while I do these changes and when the new server has everything in place, I’ll swap over the DNS to point to my new home so hopefully I’ll be able to do it all without any downtime.

There wont be any new posts after this one is published until I’m on the new site but I’m hoping to get it all done by the weekend so it’s only a few days to go without anything new to read.

Let the move commence!

It worked!

The free version launch went really well and over 520 bloggers opted in to see the videos and get entered into the contest which, considering that I only had 1200 on the notify list is a pretty good percentage! anything over 100 entrants to a contest is good so getting 5 times that felt nice.

I think the launch went successfully and I learned an awful lot about the process and what I might want to do for the launch of premium CommentLuv (coding starts in July for that) and I also learned what a tiring experience it can be trying to keep up with a bazillion emails and questions.

I’ll be much more ready for next time!

I think I can say it’s been a success considering how many people downloaded it on it’s first 2 days on the repository!

Videos get comments!

I’m still in mid-launch mode for the new version of CommentLuv and I’ve been blown away by the amount of interaction and feedback that I’ve received from everyone. The first video got 5 pages of facebook comments, the second video got 100 comments in less than 24 hours (um, including my replies, that is) and well, the third one might even have more because I’m going to try and make it even easier to leave a comment and I’m giving away free stuff!
