How I Got 50k Pageviews For A Single Post In A Day

Article by

Student, studying in Moscow. Also an active blogger.

This post is a case study about an accidental discovery through my blog recently. I must say that this is one of the most uniquely tested and proven methods ever known to me with regards to generating a huge amount of traffic over a short period of time.

The influx of visitors into a website is often associated by many with that of financial gains or profits. While this statement is apparently not without basis, the benefits of deriving a huge amount of traffic into a website may also include the ability to reach such a nobler motives and social responsibilities by means of proliferating the awareness and spreading the information by the organizing charitable institutions or individuals.

The Case

The recent political uproar in Egypt (#jan25) had caused quite a stir to the world at large. Since many Malaysian students, most of whom studying medicine, were residing in the affected Egyptian cities, their safety became quite a concern specifically to the parents of those students and generally to the nation. The situation in Egypt turned from bad to worse when the lines of communication to the outside world, in particular the internet, were cut down and thus instilling more worries into the minds of the people in Malaysia.

A friend of mine who was a student over there wrote me a long message in Facebook, asking for my assistance to spread the word concerning an allegedly real situation in Egypt at that time. She wrote to me on behalf of her friends who were still in Egypt and described the actual condition experienced by the Malaysian students there. From the message she sent, she basically tried to inform the authorities that those living in the main Egyptian cities needed immediate evacuation as public chaos and rampant criminalities were the order of the day. In addition to that, she specifically set up a blog to spread the word about this unfortunate political chaos.

My Execution

Most people would, by default, write an ordinary blog post: briefly mention the situations in their post, express the way they feel about that matter, and explicitly tell their readers that the intention of that post is non-other than trying to get as much visitors to the blog as possible. In my opinion, such effort would work depending on the situation and urgency of the event but in most cases, blogposts which have a cause will always fail to attract the masses. As for me, I do have the intention of attracting visitors too but I do it in a slightly different way.

The usual underlying problem in traffic generation is that when people have a vague idea of what to do to get the most out of such a scenario. In the same vein, a sense of antagonism would be harboured by some people because they think if they were to give this guy a retweet or share his link on Facebook, he’ll surely reap the benefits alone.

In this case, you can’t really blame those people for thinking like that because the blogosphere is a dog-eats-dog world where everyone is seemingly competing with one another. Thus, there is always a tendency for rivalry to take place among bloggers. So what I did in response to this was to let them copy the whole entry and repost it in their blog (in praise of the idea of a tumblelog). I specifically told them to copy the entry, each and every sentence of it and do whatever they could to spread the news as widely as possible. It proved to be working.

At this stage other bloggers would think, “hey, I’ve got the latest scoop about the latest buzz in the internet world, free content, legit and has its own cause. I should post this in my blog to let people know what’s going on so that something could be done.” They won’t think that I’m in this solitarily for my own personal gain because they have a part in it.

Now here’s where the magic happened. Please note that I did not ask them to give me credit at all but being cultured bloggers themselves, those who copied my post have had the simple courtesy of crediting the entry back to me, by way of citing myself as the original source. Readers of those blogs would then in turn clicked on the link which led to my site. The process did not stop here. Other bloggers would keep on reposting the entry, creating a long chain of reactions, so long as the matter-of-subject was still shining under the limelight.

Twitter

Done with the blogging part. Now how do we get loads of people to retweet this even if they don’t read the post?

Given the circumstances that there was a necessity to urge the Malaysian government to extend help to the Malaysians in Egypt at the quickest rate possible, I purposely included the Malaysian Prime Minister’s tweet handle in the post title. By doing so, each retweet published will be automatically subjected to the Prime Minister at the same time. The tweet is good that people will hit the retweet button the instant they read it because it brings a matter of some importance and has a reputable receiver, that is the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

People will also be encouraged to retweet because they will then be able to take part in the expression of a shared sentiment to a credible audience. It is as good as it is thus gives people more confidence to retweet it as some are really concerned about their follower counts that they carefully choose what to retweet and what not. Again, if masses know what to do they will take action.

The Result

The actual entry on my blog

The actual entry on my blog

I got a whopping 500 retweets, at least 4000 Facebook shares and at least 50,000 pageviews for that page in the same day it was published. The blog that I was promoting managed to get 30k fans on its Facebook page for that day.

The title says: [Latest] The Egypt Crisis – The Condition of Malaysian Student @NajibRazak. Now tell me, who wouldn’t retweet this?

What Now?

For the purpose of this contest and its theme (traffic generation), I strongly believe this is one of the best ways to gain traffic. I’m not saying that this is the ultimate success formula for all but what I’m sharing here is essentially an overview of how to tell people what to do and actually make them think that they should do it. This is as legitimate as it is and let us imagine if charity causes or donation drives on the internet implement this kind of strategy – I’m sure they will be achieving results more favorably.

What do you think? I’d love to hear your insights on this. Don’t forget to give me some love by retweeting this, you know you want to. I really appreciate it and thanks for reading =)

Shout out to my best buddies, Amir from Project 2074 and Yuyu for helping me with the proofreading task and final editing. Thanks a lot!

Of course with tremendous amount of pageviews in a day, your income will increase. That’s just how it works. The numbers are subjective depending on the ads company you’re working with and the campaign that is running on your blog.

          Hope that answer satisfies you.

And no, I don’t blog purposely for money because if I do, I’d create all those niche blogs like most other people do. It’s just a personal blog. But that does not stop me from making my blog better than other blogs that are created to generate income. To me achieving extraordinary achievements like this satisfies me and that’s that.

          Hope this answers your question.

IMHO, Ariff was sincerely focused on sharing the status of Malaysian students and the traffic and potential income it might generate were additional benefits. Again IMHO, A.J.s question indicates that his primary interest is how much money he could make using this idea and not the benefit Ariff intended to share by publishing that information.

It appears that Ariff stumbled upon this successful strategy and shared it. He did not know the strategy and then – taking advantage of a trending topic – publish just anything in hopes of benefiting financially.

Intention is important and where your heart is will eventually be revealed. Some famous bloggers serve manna and fools line up to buy from them, but the best bloggers are not financially focused and only later do they decide that monetizing would allow them to spread more good faster.

You WILL be judged by what is in your heart and that is not an easy thing to keep hidden for long.

What those who lack discernment can not tell is which came first – the motive or the good. For example, one of my last ten posts is about Kikolani’s new ebook on How to Promote Blog posts. That fits perfectly with the theme of this post so I’ve selected it to feature in CommentLuv in this post.

Since her inexpensive ebook has an affiliate program and Kristi is well-known in CommentLuv circles, it is possible that I could earn affiliate commissions by sharing it. What is key, though, is that I share it because it could benefit those reading this and NOT because it could send a little cash my way. (That post was published March 1, two weeks before this post existed so I could not personally have planned to have it available as one of my last ten posts today.)

We have to learn that when we focus on the greater good – as many bloggers do – we are rewarded EVENTUALLY; when we focus on selfish motives and money our intentions will become obvious and only fools will fall for that forever.

It’s just the rule as it is, when we do something out of the goodness and not profit, then we will duly be rewarded for it because of the sincerity but when we do something with purely profit in mind, then it won’t go as well as we had expected because it lacks passion. People will easily be irritated by it.

            @Pathan

Thanks for commenting. I fully agree with you. Sometimes people just focus on SEO and popular keyword without even thinking of site authority which guarantees an everlasting surge of visitors. When i saw the title of ariff’s post in his blog, two things pop ups in my mind.

One, the issue that we put up in his blog was a current issue, everyone wants to know about it.

Secondly, that post might generate huge traffic, and he wants the traffic at the first place.

About the power of twitter and facebook, everyone knows it. What makes difference here is the issue that he wrote in his blog.

But I do agree about the linkback, when someone read it, he may led to ariff blog.
The reality is, you’ll not have chances like this everytime.

great read, good example of how social media can give a tremendous boost: all depends on quality, fan base and timing.

What I do wonder, though, is have you seen any lasting increase in traffic because of this?

What I mean is I had such an experience once, where I posted a list of Photoshop alternatives and had it submitted to Digg (you know, back in the day..). I got like 11000 pageviews in a day (I nearly died in excitement), but my blog wasn’t very optimized back then so traffic quickly went down again. Never had it stick to anything higher than 50 daily pageviews after that.

How does such a burst of exposure affect your Google ranking?

I managed to get some new followers through my blog’s Facebook fanpage. That’s a big win already as the number of fans there never decreases, unless you are being annoying to your fans.

With people talking about my blog in their site, that simply increases quality exposure for my blog. That’s different from Digg because blog readers are somewhat loyal to the source (blog) they get information from whereas at Digg, well they just loyal to buzz of the day. That’s why you did not manage to sustain the attention you got earlier.

Talking about Google, I was ranked first for the keyword ‘mesir’ within a few weeks of the traffic burst and now have fallen to the second page of SERP. With such exposure and attention, Google will list you on the first page for the related keyword.

Hi Ariff – interesting approach. The main thing that I would be worried about is the search engines not knowing which blog had the authoritative version, and thus ranking the copies higher than yours.

A secondary worry is that for articles with different subject matter, other bloggers aren’t going to be as courteous and link back to the original.

But glad to see this tactic worked for you. 50k pageviews for a single post in a day is remarkable!

For that day. I was ranked at the first place in Google SERP. I think over the years. Google search has improved tremendously. With taking into account social share points, they can determine real links that people are promoting instead of links that are up there by means of artificial and non ethical methods.

As for courtesy is concerned, guess we just have to trust people, especially out readers. Yes, there are people like that who would never link back but I believe those are the minorities.

Thanks for the comment and for actually spending time reading my post. Appreciate it!

  45. A most excellent example of an article gone viral and trending, my question Ariff is did the traffic surge cause any site outages or performance impact? Most bloggers on any sort of shared hosting couldn’t suffer such a surge without having a denial of service on their blog which would lead to most people getting a 500 error if not worse which would have a backfire effect. If one is to try and go for surges like this, I would suggest you are on VPS or dedicated hosting. I don’t know any shared hosting plans that could cause your blog to survive a surge like this and not provide an outage.

I was wondering the same this after the surge but from my Site Uptime and Montastic report, I did not get any alerts at all informing me of any outages or error. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m using a cloud hosting account rather than the traditional shared hosting that made all that difference.

My site was not optimize at that time (no caching, no CDN) yet it worked well. Total bandwidth consumed for that day was around 6+ GB.

That’s was blogging gone wild, I must say. What a creative way to use blogging to do GENUINE social good, and also increase branding and exposure.

Definitely, that kind of post would push your post high up in the SERP. Quick question here: Did you manage to track how that massive amount of traffic influenced other SEO parameters?

Unfortunately no. The tsunami like surge of traffic came from numerous sources (mainly from other blogs. Facebook share and Twitter) and it did not occur to me to do an in-depth investigation of the exact percentage gained from SEO. As I said, this was all unplanned and happened like somebody did a magic trick. You never know that the last thing a blogger would do (letting people copy their content) would actually reward them greatly.

Sometimes, the unconventional method works better than those of well known. You just have to experiment more often to gain more knowledge in traffic generation.

  48. You’ve given me an idea to test out your strategy for one of my causes that needs a big boost from like-minded fans. Really good stuff! I’m entered in this contest too. I called my traffic generation tips vibrant because they were accidental and fruitful. Your idea has generated staggering numbers that are truly reflective of being vibrant. I’m intrigued. I have to re-read your post and then get busy with the idea of asking people to re-post. Funny how something that we’re not supposed to do worked so well. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.

    Well done!

I’m overwhelmed that the very objective I’m writing this report is achieved. It is really satisfying to see people generate more ideas out of what I have done rather than doing the exact same thing that I already did.

Thanks for the your support. I really appreciate it and really hope this article could make it somewhere throughout this contest. At least getting it published in the ebook is my goal at the moment.

Being a blogger, you must always be prepared to give your fullest in every post you write on your blog. There must be some level of consistency and quality control to be looked at if not when situation like this happens and you fail to deliver, you won’t get the maximum benefit out of it.

    Hi Ariff,

First and foremostly, reading your post and noticing that you share everything without holding any information back proves your sincerity and how genuine your technique is. It is true when you said that what matters is our objective in what we write and what we share with our readers. If in our hearts, we’re just looking to generate money, it will be translated to our blog posts and attract less readers in comparison to someone who does it just to share knowledge and information (yet at the same time, appreciates the money it is generating).

When I first started blogging, other bloggers I knew just told me that in order to increase traffic to my blog, I have to blogwalk a lot. But due to my work, that is quite impossible. Now, after reading your post, I think I might give it a try and see if your technique might work for me too.

    So thanks for sharing Ariff!

Blogging is about sharing. That’s the very principe I hold on from the very start of my blog. I share everything that I know and that sharing and teaching has made my blog successful. Bring it to the next level and let people use your content, then it might work wonders. You never know.

Other than that, at the early stages of blogging you just can’t focus on the making money part. Most bloggers have this misconception that they will make lots of money once they start a blog, which is why those kind of blogs never see a future. Money is good, but without focusing on the content first, you won’t even see the money. Once you have perfectly done your content sharing part, then only u’d enjoy all the benefits that come with blogging.

      Thanks for reading =)

Two problems I see with this:

    1. It relies on a rather unusual situation, How often do you have inside information when a coup is going on?
    2. By putting your content out there, you may end up in the Google Sandbox because they could assume you were proliferating duplicate content all over the web.

I guess for the long term yes, maybe Google won’t take this into account but the idea of letting people use your content and giving back the referral link to you works quite well depending on the situation. As I have stated this is not the only way to gain a burst of traffic like this, but it is unique in nature and it worked on my side. Thus sharing the idea of it will hopefully let people generate new ideas and methods out of it.

Then again apart from making your site popular with lots of fans and followers at social media sites such as Twitter & Facebook, there’s no other permanent way to gain traffic other than those two. It’s the accidental factors like this that people should know which encourage them to work hard and not just that, but work creatively.

Yeah. Got quite a number of backlinks just from this post. That’s a great thing really as some people really strive to get backlinks. Maybe in the future the content wont be as much use, but the backlinks still count as backlinks. Thus contributing to higher domain trust and authority.
Domain authority will result in better ranking in SERP, and there you have it, again will contribute to more traffic.
