When I first started to comment on blogs my main purpose was to become “known”.
- Known as someone who had common sense and knew what they were talking about.
- My purpose was to establish a reputation.
- Need an opinion, just ask, and I will share mine.
- However, after commenting for a short period of time something mysteriously happened.
- I started to get to know the people behind their blogs, and I liked them.
- That is what happens when you hang out with like minded people.
- I realize that for many, posting comments is their search for the holy grail, the coveted backlink.
- And I admit, I too wanted that backlink.
- But not at the expense of automating everything to the point of being impersonal.
- I want to get to know these people, have real conversations with them, and share ideas.
- For example I know Cheryl is a passionate artist.
- I know Marcus has the same dreams I do.
- I know Oliver wants to retire to Guernsey.
- And for so many others they do what they do because of freedom and family.
- The blogs I read and comment on are written by passionate people who dream the dream I dream.
- As you build these types of friendships online you will become “known” to them.
- You will share ideas and support each other so that you become “known” to a greater circle of friends.
- And then one day you wake up and suddenly you are “known” as someone worth listening to.
That is the power of “commenting“.

This one made me smile. It’s great when, over time, you come to realizations you hadn’t expected. These should be made into a wall poster and given away to all new website owners who are looking to make connections.

Hi Peter,
great post. There are plenty of reciprocal benefits of commenting. For me, it’s also part of my overall networking strategy. I have the goal to reply to every comment on my blog. That strengthens the relationships. And you are right: Doing it automatically without any personal touch is not the right way of doing it. It’s OK if someone simply wants to say that it’s a great post, but if he or she doesn’t write a personal greeting like “Hi Oliver”, it’s no good. The same holds true if folks comment exactly the same stuff – word by word – on several blog posts from different people. By the way, thanks for mentioning me in your post
Take care

Commenting is a powerful way to build our recognition as someone who IS known for those things. It lets us reach out to others – that may not even know where to turn – and provide support, insight, thoughts and friendship. Commenting may let us build backlinks, but it also helps us build the most powerful link of all… a relationship between people! Well said!

In terms of getting your name/brand known online and gaining authority, it’s very important to leave insightful comments. Every comment you leave paints a picture about you and affects the way people see you or your brand!

Aww ain’t this nice? LOL. It is a sad a depressing time for SEO link builders and so it is a great pleasure to come across this Commentluv community. Firstly it’s a great link building resource (ahem) and I am shallow enough to admit that. But also we can all help the poor abused (mainly by Google … seems like S&M relationship … we love it and hate it and are beaten by it … but we always return), bashed and downtrodden SEO experts out there who are stuffing the pages of Google with “cheap golf shoes online” or whatever thing nobody wants.

Great post Peter! Blog commenting is really powerful in many ways. More than 5 years ago, I had my first ever blog when we did testings on my previous company blog hosting site. That’s when I realized how fun it is to blog — the blog hopping and commenting. I gained a lot of friends and traffics to my blog was really amazing. Then I stopped as I got so busy w/ bigger and more responsibilities in my career. And then we did a lot of websites with different topics and one of our effective strategies in promoting them and getting traffics was blog commenting. We really got good PR to our sites through this strategy and until now, I keep using it.
