If you have any interest in gadgets, you’ll probably know that about ten days ago Apple released their latest iPad. No, it wasn’t called the “iPad 3.” In fact, it was simply called “The New iPad.” In spite of the potentially confusing name, millions of units were sold in just a few days. Many consider this tablet to be a game changer. According to Apple themselves, it’s “resolutionary” (if you don’t the mind pun).
On the other hand, the new iPad does have its critics. Not everyone is racing to the nearest store to get one. In this article, we’ll take a look at a couple of the pros and a couple of cons of the new iPad. Hopefully this will help you decide whether to get one for yourself.
What’s good about the new iPad – A couple of “pros”
(1) Retina display – For most people, Apple’s latest iPad is all about the “Retina” display. Imagine looking at a beautiful magazine. Imagine brighter colors and sharper text. Imagine a screen that makes your HD TV look positively second-rate. Well, this is what you get with the Retina display. With four times as many pixels as the iPad 2, this display is considered stunning by almost everyone who has been fortunate enough to see it in action.
(2) The iSight camera – One complaint levelled against earlier generations of the iPad was that they didn’t include a quality camera. Apple appear to have addressed this issue in their most recent release. The new iPad comes fitted with a 5 mega-pixel camera, which allows users to take much better photos than was previously possible. It has been said that this camera uses the same digital processing and five-element lens system as the iPhone 4S. Those who are interested in seeing whether there’s any difference may wish to check out cnet’s test. Whatever the case though, nobody would deny that the camera on this tablet is far superior to the one on its predecessor.
What’s not so good about the new iPad – A couple of “cons”
(1) Weight and dimensions – One might have thought the new iPad would be thinner and lighter than the iPad 2. In fact, the opposite is the case. The 3rd generation iPad is about 50g heavier and 0.6mm thicker than the iPad 2. For some this is not a big deal.
For others, though, it is rather disappointing. For the extra weight and thickness can in some cases make the tablet a little less comfortable to hold, especially for extended periods. Those who prefer sleek, ultra
light-weight gadgets may therefore not be so thrilled by Apple’s latest offering.
(2) Overheating problem – One of the most controversial aspects of the launch of the new iPad has been the reported overheating problem. Not everyone agrees that this problem really exists (Apple, as you might expect, were quick to deny it). But there are certainly a fair few owners who claim that the iPad does feel rather hot to the touch, especially when it is used to play HD games for an hour or two.
These issues have not prevented the new iPad from selling in huge quantities, but they could explain why there has been a renewed interest in where to buy ipad 2 tablets as well. For in spite of the new iPad’s advances, there are one or two respects in which it falls short of its predecessor. Specifically, the 2nd generation tablet is thinner and lighter. In addition, it does not suffer from the apparent overheating issue that is affecting the new iPad.
On the other hand, the immaculate Retina display is a significant improvement. What’s more, the new iPad also supports 4G LTE networks, which can make browsing the net and streaming videos lightning-fast. And we’ve already spoken about the new and improved camera. In short, the qualities of this new iPad are more or less undeniable.
But is it really worth the investment? That depends on your preferences and standpoint. If you love beautiful visuals and wish to take high-quality photos with your tablet, then it’s certainly worth considering Apple’s new tablet. On the other hand, if it’s important to you that your tablet should be light weight or if you wish to save some money, then perhaps the 2nd generation iPad (or indeed another tablet altogether) might be a better choice. More and more tablets are appearing on the market, so you certainly won’t struggle to find others to choose from.

I would buy the new iPad, but I keep telling myself to wait for the next one which will be coming out in probably 6 to 8 months. I guess I just need to realize they are going to keep releasing new versions so I just just get one now. That way I can at least utilize it for these months spent waiting for the next version.

Thanks for the comments. RE the heating issue – some people say it’s a problem; others deny it. If you plan to play computer games for hours on end, it may be a problem. If you do other things mainly, it should be fine.
@Austin – yep, I can see Apple bringing out an even “newer” iPad within a year. It’s probably going to keep happening. I don’t think it’s necessary to keep upgrading every time. Once in a while, they may do something truly revolutionary, but if it’s just a few tweaks here and there, it may not be worth forking out the money again and again.
All depends on how much you love your gadgets though. For some, they’re worth every penny!
I have the iPad 2 and I haven’t seen a reason to get the 3 yet. But my business is going mobile so I’ll need one on the network…which gives me a reason to upgrade lol. Thanks for the review, it was definitely better than most out there.
I have had all three versions of the iPad and every time I get one I say I’m keeping it for at least two years. They are great for my line of work. I’m a Realtor and I get to use it on listing presentations and buyers presentations. It helps to organize my day and to keep track of appointments and contacts. Speed is key in my business and that’s why I keep upgrading. My daughter has benefitted by getting my older ones. I would definitely recommend people to buy the new iPad. It’s fast powerful and gets the job done.

Hi Andy, I’ve noticed that your pop-up subscription form keeps popping up every time a new page is loaded. I think it’s a little bit annoying.
Overheating is definitely a problem. I have my iPad in my bedroom where my AC is set to 16 degree celcius and it still overheats. I then have to switch it off to cool down a bit before I turn it on. You’re damn right it’s an inconvenience.

Thanks for your comment Jack – it’s very interesting to hear that overheating is an issue. I’ve heard of people who simply can’t hold the thing after more than an hour of gaming.
Apple denied that it was an issue but there are plenty of people saying it gets too hot to hold after a while

To be fair, I didn’t cover ALL the pros of the new iPad. And the Retina display is being hailed as a very impressive “upgrade.” I do think you may have a point about releasing it too soon though – if they keep releasing a new one every six months, people may well get tired of it

Two things which put me off the iPad. One, the huge bezel/trim on it makes it feel and look cheap (to me anyway). I’d much prefer it to have an infinity edge style screen. Two, bang for buck. With the launch of Ivy Bridge in the not too distant future, I think I’d rather spend a couple of hundred extra on an 11 inch air. Whilst there are no details of this yet, USB3, (real) 10 hour battery, perhaps a detachable touch screen?!
Ok maybe not, but a much more user friendly piece of kit for any blogger out there. This new iPad was too soon after iPad2, improved resolution and camera are not game changers imho.

Thanks for your comment. I agree that “game changer” was too strong a claim for this new iPad. People throw the term about too easily. The fact is that the screen is better on the new iPad and the camera is improved too. For many these are nice things, but they’re probably not enough to make the new iPad some sort or revolutionary device, I agree.
Should you get the new iPad? No, you shouldn’t.
Why?
Because the WiFi problems everyone’s going on about on the internet are very much true! And I say this from personal experience. I bought a launch-day machine, 32 GB with 4G LTE. Didn’t notice a lot of overheating that everyone seems to be going on about. But this thing cannot get a proper WiFi connection, fails to detects networks and has generally poor WiFi connectivity + keeps disconnecting.
Its sad because that screen is, in one word: epic! Sadly, this this will have to be returned since its pretty much useless without WiFi and I recommend anyone looking to get their first iPad or an upgrade to hold on, since a fix (a software/hardware upgrade/revision) is probably around the corner.
Plus I would recommend people get a windows-base device anyway, since they have exe-support and probably would also have USB support.

It is surprising that the new iPad isn’t smaller. That’s usually one of the biggest pushes for tech companies– smaller, cheaper and faster for new releases! (Well, maybe not always the cheaper part when a product is first released). I still think the iPhone is the way to go because it does pretty much everything the iPad can do but it’s more travel-friendly.

The graphics/visuals won’t matter to many people so yes, the iPad 2 is still a great choice. Personally, I like the idea of saving 100 bucks, too.

I received the New iPad as a gift and it has been great so far. I have been using it to run my business and I have not had any issues at all. If I did not get the iPad as a gift I would not have purchased it, but I will take a free iPad (except I got to pay the monthly data plan).
It has been everything I though it was. It is exactly like my iPhone just it has a bigger screen. It is so easy to use.
The question now is, when is the next iPad coming out? I am sure they have it in the works.

In my opinion it wasn’t a good time to launch a new iPad that doesn’t give buyers much improvements. Looks like Apple is feeling the punch from competitors and fear they lose the market. Interestingly, there is a lot of people who buy “the latest and the greatest” as soon as it becomes available.

With the advent of the iPad3, I have no doubt there will be a lot of iPad2′s for sale cheap. Sounds to me like it would be a good time to get a good deal on an iPad2 if you are ok with the “old” screen and such.

I’ve been wanting to buy the new IPAD when I first heard it. But whenever I realized how expensive it is, I always say to myself if it’s really worth the money to spend something that expensive. I should think a lot of times first before purchasing.
Need to think first before buying this one since the product is not that cheap. Need to save first.
