All Change!

I bought Digital Access Pass a few months ago to handle the payments and membership system for my Tools To Make Money with your site">Tools To Make Money site and spent a gawdawful amount of time configuring it and trying to make it do what I needed.

For the most part, it worked. Sort of.

I found things I didn’t like in it though. Things like saving the admin password in plain text, an inability to send affiliates an email when they made a sale, affiliates only got associated with members who bought something, encrypted code so I couldn’t see what was going on and other things that, well, if you’re not a geek like me that likes to play with code you probably wouldn’t notice but things that I couldn’t accept in a commercial plugin that costs the best part of $300.

For most people that have a digital product to sell or other type of drip fed content solution I guess it would be fine. There are lots of instructional videos and it seems to work fine for most people.

It’s not for me though.

Weekends worth of maintenance

I used a product called Amember last year and did some pretty advanced modifications to it and it is a super system that I can tinker with because I can see all the code. They’ve released a new version that looks spiffy and I’ve spent the last week testing it out on my local machine.

I can make my own custom plugins for it and it has been around for a long long time (the previous version) and it has been shown to be a very stable and reliable system. (and the support is much much quicker than DAPs)

I will be spending this weekend migrating my entire DAP system over to Amember which will require me to put ToolsToMakeMoney.com and IMGraphics.com in to maintenance mode so if you experience problems with anything that you’ve bought from either of those sites then please be patient! This is a delicate process!

Wish me luck!

I’ve done a dry run on my local machine but things have a habit of going a bit squirly when it comes to live servers so I’ll need all the luck I can get to get through to the other side of the weekend with a fully functioning system again.

The good news is, when everything is done then I’ll have a proper hub for all my future products and a working 2 tier affiliate system with lifetime commissions. (all existing affiliates will be transferred over with the connections intact)

Ah ha! the key line in this review is “I can tinker with because I can see all the code”. How many other applications can we say that about? If you can see (and edit) the code then you are 50% of the way there. Time – even a weekend! – spent configuring the beast passes quicker if you have total access.

oh yes, being able to deconstruct stuff on my local machine really helps me get a grasp of how it works and how I can make my stuff work with it.

it’s a little complex but it follows the zend mvc so once you get used to it, it’s a very powerful system
