First, you need traffic
Creating streams of revenue online is a very intriguing notion for many people, but out of the millions of online Internet marketing types, few actually make it to the point of success. Making money online through blogging is the most basic and easiest method to get started in trying to bring in some extra cash. There are several free resources to setup a blog, and are easily found online. When it comes to actually generating income online, you can set up multiple ways to monetize the blog. In the beginning, do not worry so much about the income, but focus on bringing in a targeted audience, otherwise known as traffic.
Where people seem to fail the most in this sort of enterprise is they obsess about possible income, instead creating great information or content for their blog that people will be compelled read, and return many times in the future. Also, the more passion a blogger has for the subject matter for their blog, typically it will be more popular. If your blog is about small business accounting, and you cannot even balance a checkbook, then that might not be a good fit. If you are an avid fan of say NASCAR, Working Out, or Home Decor, then take all of your life experiences, and write useful information that will help others, when they find your web-site.
It’s hard! (at first)
Making money with this information can be hard at first, but after you have a good subscriber base in six months to a year, then selling products, such as books, DVDs, or personal services will be a great way to make money online. There are also other means to make money, and one is through Google’s Adsense program. If they approve your blog or website, you can then insert snippets of code that will publish text, and graphic based ads on your website. As Internet surfers land on your website they will be presented with these ads that are germane to the subject matter you post on your blog. If they find one of the advertisements appealing and click on one, then you are paid a percentage of what Google charges the advertiser for publishing the ad.
Depending on the amount of targeted traffic that lands on your site, and average cost of each click you can realize anywhere from zero to thousands of dollars per day, week, or month. Unless you are a celebrity, and in the news frequently realize that this is going to take time, and quality work, and the ability to experiment with the content, ad placement, how well the blog ranks in the main three search engines.

Hi Richard
Very interesting post. I have been blogging for about 4 months now and my traffic is slowly increasing week for week. My blog is mainly a hobby project but of cause I wouldn’t mind if I could make a little extra income at some point. Do you think that Adsense would be a good place for me to start or is there other better alternatives out there?
I am not expected to earn big box on this, but a little income would also be nice.

4 months is a good starting point. I’d say, start with AdSense and then as your traffic increases you can begin to move to direct sales.
Focus on the content & traffic only. Produce good content, get more eyeballs in front of that content. Do nothing else and you can set your price for advertising space.

using adsense is the quickest and easiest way to make money – however just because you have a great blog, site content or whatever does not mean you will make money.
They are in no way shape or form related.
You need to position your ads well and actually get people to click on them.

@zoop AdSense is a pretty easy and quick way to make money, as you said… but I would like to add “make some money”… because let’s face it, only a few blogs out there make a lot of money with adsense. all the other bloggers wither got into affiliate marketing, use kontera, PPC, sell ads… you can’t really expect to make huge amounts of dollars with adsense from one blog. it might work if you have 10 blogs, each bringing you 5 dollars a day… then you can make a few bucks, but otherwise, the best money maker still remains affiliate marketing… I guess

you are right, Alex. adsense is good if you want to make some money, a little with multiple sites… but if you really want to make money, then the affiliate marketing is the way… eventually, later, when you’ll have your own product, digital product, for example, you can sell it on clickbank and if it’s a good product and you get good JV partners, you’re on your way to the 1st million online:P

I currently make enough a month to pay for my hosting for three years, which makes my blog self-sufficient. Obviously, I am always finding ways to increase the income it generates to cover more than my blogging expenses.
While using AdSense is probably the easiest way of making money with a blog, it is important to diversify the income sources. There may be times when you will have a lower-than-expected AdSense income month, so by diversifying you may be able to offset a slow AdSense month with another source of income. I learned that last year, and am now actively looking at other means of income.

Hi Paul
Making my blog self-sufficient is one of my goals for the future. I have no ambition to be rich on my blog, but it could be nice if it could cover my expenses. I think I will give AdSense a go in the future. Thank you for sharing your experience with AdSense.

I always thought for a very long time, even before i left school that the internet had a lot of potential for making money. I actually set up a very basic web site which gave away desktop backgrounds with some click through adverts on. this did actually make me a few hundred although nothing much more. I never really pursued it once i left school but actually wished i did now after seeing so many doing well from it…. good advice, but it really does take quite a bit of work to gain the traffic
talking bout traffic, my blog is really bad. i hope it will be increasing

I’ve been making $100 monthly on Adsense roughly although my traffic is 1000-2000 PV and a 50% bounce rate. What seems to be the problem with that?

As a new blog that is two months of age as of today I am starting off with adsense but in my view adsense would only be worth it if my blog were able to garner hundred of thousands of visitors per month. I think that affiliate marketing is better for new blogs as one sale of a good product can produce more income then adsense in a month for new blogs. I don’t expect my adsense to be generating a profitable income until a couple years down the road.

Traffic is needed in order to make some decent money, so it’s really important to
promote and market your blog, if you’re already on internet marketing for a while now then you
do know the mwthods of driving traffic to your blog, all you need now is to take actions.
Thanks for this post…I just started 3 weeks ago so this information is very helpful. My traffic has been slowly building to currently over 3,000 views since March 13th so I hope it keeps going upward!! It’s mainly travel but with a focus on international destinations and art/design..
I think it’s absolutely necessary to be passionate about what your putting out there to your audience otherwise it probably won’t work out in the end. Good content is the first and main goal.

How did you get all that traffic so quickly, Travel Designery?! I’ve had one blog for a year now and that number is not even in sight. The other blog I run (linked) is my baby, having just started it in January. But really…. I’ve got two followers and a handful of page views a day. I try to comment on other related blogs thoughtfully about once a day on average, dropping my link there as well. Is that not enough? What should I be doing?
Laura recently posted..My Studio Workspace
Laura, I think leaving comments and your link on as many pages as possible is a good way to build up traffic… sites of course that are along similar subject matter as yours is also helpful but it is key to just get your name out there through as many outlets as possible. Invite people to your site, just let them know your there and that you’d appreciate that they check out you site also… don’t be shy to let people know about your blog! I also recently ran into this thing called ‘blog hop’, mostly by mommy bloggers, but it’s basically an exchange of follow me-follow you, so if you’re interested in that, definitely start hitting up some of those!

Hi Guys
Don’t knock Adsense because it is just another way of making money. I have Adsense websites , Affiliate websites, and now Amazon websites….
The strategy is the same for all of them. Some websites are right for Adsense, others for affiliate marketing. You just have to pinpoint the right way to make money. You can make crazy amounts of money with any of them…If you have picked your niche and targeted your keywords correctly.
All of these money making methods mean absolutely nothing without traffic. Seriously the whole thing comes down to SEO on and off page, and loads of traffic!

Making money through blogging is not as easy as it seems. I’ve been at it for almost a year now and the journey has been far from smooth. Its been full of obstacles, the primary one being the amount of hard work that is required, followed by strong competition and lack of traffic. So the bottom line is that one has to be seriously passionate about blogging in order to succeed.

A good way to make money online is to maybe explore foreign markets. If you do some decent keyword research there is little to no competition in for instance, Spanish, Portuguese, and so on markets. Thus meaning quicker ranking, much more traffic, leading to more cash. Good luck.

It’s not easy signing up in Adsense. If you’re not careful, you might get declined. And it’s not easy to get targeted traffic. Easy as it seems it still needs load of hard-work.

Passion is important, but it’s also important to find a niche. I love running and biking, but I’d never in a million years expect to make money on a running blog simply because they’re so competitive. By breaking down a popular topic into a niche, however, you can find an existing community that’s hungry for your content. Marathon running, for example, or bike tours in Vermont.

All he did was constantly blog almost daily. he now has quick his full time job and has started blogging fulltime. Constant hard working and getting the right niche’s is extremely important.
