Let’s face it waking up with a stuffy nose and scratchy throat is the farthest thing from a pleasant morning. In fact I don’t think anyone would say they “didn’t mind it.” Rather morning allergies often lead to frustrations and plenty of complaints.
The common regimen for morning symptoms includes clearing the throat, getting a drink of something warm and blowing your nose. For some they may include a regular antihistamine for extra relief but generally speaking the symptoms subside on their own.
This is because the irritant leading to your allergic reaction is actually living in your mattress!
The Real Cause of Morning Allergies
What many people don’t know is the real reason for all that congestion when they wake. The truth is you mattress is filled with a microscopic beast and common allergen known as the house dust mite. These mites live in your beds feeding on the skin cells that “flake” off while you sleep. They thrive in dark, humid areas and your mattress makes for the perfect breeding environment.
As these mites feed they of course eliminate waste, in your mattress! As their lifecycle comes to an end they die, in your mattress! It is the fragments of these dead mites as well as their waste that are the source of your allergy symptoms.
Every time you move in the bed, fluff the pillow or rustle the sheets you send these tiny particles into the air you breathe. As you sleep you are continually inhaling these particles saturating your system. The end result are bothersome respiratory symptoms, and in some cases asthma.
Is It Truly and Allergy
Not everyone that wakes with morning stuffiness has a genuine allergy to dust mites. It is true that dust can get anybody coughing or sneezing if inhaled, but for those truly allergic the amount to be inhaled is far less; so small in fact that we don’t even recognize we have inhaled it into our systems.
Those who do suffer from a genuine allergy complain of a runny nose, scratchy throat and congestion. Over time their symptoms can escalate to shortness of breath and even asthma.
To determine if your symptoms are in fact a result of dust mites your doctor will likely order a skin test with an allergy specialist. Once it is determined mites are your problem you can develop a plan to reduce allergen exposure and relieve symptoms.
3 Steps to Feeling Better
I must say that after discovering I was allergic to dust mites I was actually happy. Why? Because naturally controlling them is surprisingly simple! Here are 3 practical tips to get you started:
1) The most important aspect to finding relief is by converting your room to an allergy free zone. Simply put remove all upholstered furniture, switch from curtains to blinds and if possible replace carpet with hard floors. Doing this reduces living spaces for the dust mites, naturally lowering the number of particles floating in the air you breathe.
2) Next invest in high quality mattress and pillow covers specifically designed for dust mites. These covers eliminate the mites ability to live in your mattress and traps the waste and dead particles as well.
3) Do your homework and purchase an air purifier that clearly states effectiveness in removing dust mites. I find it very helpful to read reviews from other allergy sufferers and find out what purifiers worked for them.
That’s it! There is no need to go through painful allergy shots or drug your system with antihistamines. Simply reduce the dust mites and your symptoms will take care of themselves.

Gotta keep those air filters clean. Was having a horrible time with allergies until I realized there was an air filter in my attic that had been neglected for too long. Changed it out and I felt much better.
