I will be talking about practical points to consider in reducing bounce rate. These ideas are coming from trusted sources, which, I have analyzed and tested.

Warning: This is only applicable for people who want to exert effort to reduce their site’s bounce rate, and no way applicable to people who want an instant solution – but if you are serious, if you are ready to work to generate quality and targeted traffic for a higher conversion rate – kindly read and digest.

Bounce Rate has a lot of factors but there are 2 main points to consider

  • Website Content
  • Website Design & Behavior

Why is content the first factor to reduce bounce rate?

I always Google tutorials and information. I stick reading to a page which gives precise information to solve my problem. I continue reading when the author has presented great ideas for me to ponder. I will bookmark that page, or stumble that and go back to it later! That’s how conversion starts.

I might leave for my first visit in just few minutes without checking some more pages on that site – however, I have bookmarked it for future reference. Exploring it the second time around could be more engaging, as I will be back to dig more topics!

Why would I do that? The content is simply promising at my first visit – so am sure I can find some great contents on the archives!

What is an important lesson to learn from that real life scenario?

Writing great contents is imperative to reduce bounce rate in whatever niche your website or blog is about. In the first place, people that use search engines in looking for information online are most likely in a hurry and in need of ideas.

If you want to succeed in your content marketing, you must write for your audience. Okay, what is the difference between writing for the search engines and writing for your audience? Let’s ponder these points below:

  1. Content is key to quality traffic
  2. Quality traffic is revenue
  3. Search Engines are the tool to generate traffics

From these 3 ideas, we learnt the following:

  1. Content is crucial for us to get the quality and targeted traffic. Quality traffic are people in their homes and offices who needs your help, suggestions, opinions or reviews. A secretary, for instance, who have problems on her PC while hurrying for her deadlines will look for information on the internet, precise and informative content can help a lot, hence writing magnetic or compelling title is not enough.
  2. Quality traffic is revenue. Without traffic, you can’t make money and generate passive income online. Thus, you are
writing for the search engines, as well. You use keywords (long tail keywords) and optimize your titles, sub-headings and post body with these keywords so search engines can recommend you to people’s queries.

Is it clear to you by now? Writing for our audience is the first priority. Optimizing our content for the search engines is the second, therefore, writing for the search engines alone is the reason why you have a high bounce rate.

Moreso, if you are writing several quality related contents connect them, or link them together to reduce bounce rate. Please consider my behavior in reading online:

  1. I read until the end ignoring all suggested links, but I go back to check 1 or 2 links
  2. I read and stop to visit suggested or internal and external links

So, if you offer several worth reading contents for a related post, put the links inside the post body. It’s a great idea to break paragraphs, be creative in doing so.

Why does your website design can affect bounce rate?

  1. Dull and unprofessional pages can turn off readers. Remember “first impression lasts”. Get rid of unnecessary widgets, designs and pages. Organize your homepage and use a clean theme. Make the navigation easy for your readers.
  2. Make your content readable, use a good font size and style. Use headings, sub-headings, make use of the list (numbered or bullets) and block quotes to emphasize ideas from other sources.
  3. Loading speed is imperative to attract readers to read your content. Most of us are in a hurry, in such case I won’t wait until the page loads completely – I’ll close the tab and go back to Google again.
  4. Browser compatibility is crucial. You must observe how your website renders in all major browsers used by your visitors. Check your analytics. If your website looks odd on Internet Explorer, then try asking your web designer to tweak your Styleheet or CSS for compatibility.
  5. Too many advertisements above the fold annoy readers. Are you putting text and banner ads above the fold? Consider moving them on the right placement and let your content shine.

What are other website behaviors that can affect bounce rate?

All sort of pop ups can annoy users. If you want to reduce your bounce rate, consider removing your pop up windows. Common examples of pop ups are:

  1. Newsletter
  2. Facebook fanpage

The most common pop ups as I observe while visiting different blogs and websites are Newsletter sign up forms. Why don’t you consider placing your newsletter on your sidebar or below post content? You can strategically incorporate your layout with your newsletter form other than placing them in Jquery pop up windows.

Therefore, content and your website design are 2 important factors to reduce bounce rate! Have you check your analytics? Keep a closer look at your bounce rate report, if bounce rate is high, examine your website contents and layout and consider my points above.

Meanwhile, I need your opinions, you may add, suggest or correct.
