Netflix is “Reeling In” Late Night Television Audiences

Dan Craig
I absolutely love watching TV & Movies! I'm serious! it's so much more than just a hobby, its a passion. In fact I have square eyes from staring at my TV too much. I really enjoy writing, critiquing about my favourite programs and also the many places you can watch TV shows online free. I hope you like what I have to say.

Netflix free trialsThe former DVD-distribution-giant turned online-streaming-heavyweight is always evolving. First, they helped to single-handedly destroy brick-and-mortar video stores (with the help of torrent sites and ever improving on-demand cable/satellite services), and now they’re venturing into a place that seems almost an impossible leap: Network-style ‘late night’ television programming!
Of course, the convenience of their service is that you can watch whenever you want – I’m using the term “late night” to imply that you need to be over 13 years old to watch many of the shows they’re now producing.
This is no small feat on Netflix’s part; especially when you consider that they’re not only creating their own shows, like the Emmy-nominated House of Cards, but also revisiting the lives of old beloved characters that were long-thought dead and buried, such as Jason Bateman and the crew on Arrested Development. I’ve heard talk that they’re also in negotiations to bring back much loved shows like Jericho, Terra Nova, Firefly, and Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles – to name just a few.
Do keep in mind that some of the original characters from the aforementioned shows are now on other hit shows. Nathan Fillion is on the long-running ABC series Castle now, and Lena Headey plays a pivotal (yet much hated) role on HBO’s Game of Thrones. So, as enticing as it sounds, there’s always the possibility of utter disappointment if those shows do return and key members of the original cast are unforgivably absent from the Netflix remake.

Come On Netflix Show Us The Good Stuff Already!

There’s plenty of other cool shows, with massive budgets, that will soon be airing on Netflix. If you want to check out something original, watch the first season of Hemlock Grove with sexy Famke Janssen. This 52-million dollar, 13-episode series is an original from the streaming giant and was just renewed for a second season. The show has gypsies, werewolves, nephilim’s,
vampires who have the ability to procreate – and of course, humans and all the usual drama that they bring to the table. I won’t give away the premise, just watch it and you’ll get sucked in! Breaking news! You can now watch Wilfred season 2 Netflix as of 3 weeks ago. One of my favourites at the moment.
This trend is really quite exciting for those of us who’re already subscribers, but this post is mainly for those of you who aren’t: The proverbial “hold outs” of the jury who still haven’t made the transition away from your traditional cable or satellite service yet. I too, was on the fence up until a couple of years ago, when I decided that sitting around a TV watching reruns for more than half a year probably wasn’t the best use my spare time in this short life.
To add a little more to that: It’s the bloody commercials that are the real time sink. Next time you’re sitting in front of your television watching an old rerun of CSI for the 3rd time, consider that every hour spent watching a network show is wasting 16-19 minutes of your time with commercials; many of which probably aren’t targeted toward your area of interest anyway.
Why not wait until those shows made available on Netflix? Or heck, buy them when they come out on DVD! I will note that these are the only two “legal methods” you can watch TV at your own convenience, other than a DVR – but you’ll still have to fast-forward through the commercials and pay your service provider extra for the privilege.
We’re all so conditioned to watch television programming in a manner that’s most convenient for the networks who produce them – giving them ample time between episodes and seasons to secure millions in advertising they can then stuff down our throats like a bunch of ‘piggies in the pen’ at feeding time. If we’re all smart, we’ll take back our lives and stop being slaves to traditional network advertising and conventional TV schedules that dictate when we watch and when we don’t!
