But, does anyone know of a way to cut back on whining? Westies use whining as a way of communication and we have found that there is usually a reason for the noise. Look at it this way and you will be half way to solving the problems. Always solve in a kind way. A simple solution for a dog barking for attention while sat in front of you, is by getting up and walking into another room for 20 seconds and coming back and ignoring the dog. Repeat for about 5 or 6 times and the dog wills top barking. It realises that barking for attention does not work as you leave the room. They have different attitudes. It also depends on its environment. We have dogs here at home and all of them stay at our backyard as we have cats inside. One of our dogs seem to bark all the time when it gets caged (if we have visitors), probably it never liked the idea of being caged and maybe it is claustrophobic. You can never stop it from barking, until you let it out of the cage. The other dogs do not mind being caged at all. Dogs are just like people, they have different likes and dislikes. They are so good they often stop excessive barking after wear it. You put the collar on your dog when you go to bed and take it off in the morning; it's as simple as that. What a great post! Seems like the attention thing is 100% true and most people whose dogs bark all night long are neglected. I don't think people like these should own dogs. My husband is a lover of labs and owned many of them before. He also knows how to get the neighbors dogs to shut up by throwing a cup of cold water on them when they just won't quit.
