I wrote a post recently about CommentLuv and how FeedBurner might be stealing your links, on FamousBloggers. Which I think (I certainly hope so) that was helpful for many bloggers who didn’t know about the issue. However, recently I noticed that so many bloggers who comment on CommentLuv site have the same problem and don’t even know it. So, I thought it would be appropriate to write a similar post and this time posted here on commnetluv. I thought it will get more attention and help more bloggers, since almost all bloggers who participate in this community do use CommentLuv plugin. So here it is.

Keep your own links

When leaving comments on ComLuv enabled blogs, you will be given a chance to choose one of your last 10 posts to be shown as your last post under your comment, which is a great way to build deep links and the fact that is a dofollow link, makes it all the more interesting and wanted. However, some of you may not be getting those dofollow deep links, instead your building links for FeedBurner! Let me stop explaining and get to the point. Here is what you need to do to make sure you are indeed building backlinks for you blog and not for FeedBurner:

a- Find a comment you left on any CommentLuv enabled blog or better yet, comment on this post (Thanks)

b- Hover your mouse on the “last post by your name” link.

c- When you do that, the actual URL of the target link will be visible on the bottom left side of your browser (it might be top, right,… depending on your

browser). Is the URL the actual URL of your post, like http://yourblog.com/my/last/post or is it something like http://feedproxy.google.com/… ? If the latest is true, then you are not getting any backlinks benefits from this comment and all the other comments you have made in the past on ComLUV enabled blogs.

Fix it

So, what should you do to fix the problem? How do you turn the feedproxy.google… URL into the actual URL of your last post, giving yourself a dofollow deeplink? Dont worry! The fix is very easy and quick. Here is what you do:

1- Sign in to Feedburner. On the top left side of your FeedBurner account menu is a tab called “Analyze“, click on it!

2- It will take you to the next page where you will see your Feed Stats chart. On the left side of the page (all the way to the bottom) click on “Configure Stats” (right under “SERVICES”).

3- You’ll be directed to a page where you will see a big box named “Configure Stats”. Inside that box uncheck the second option which is “Item Link Clicks“ and click save.

Now, give the system a few hours or so to reconfigure and update itself. After a few hours come back to this post (or wherever else you left a comment) and make another comment. Hover on your “last post” link. It should be fixed now and showing the URL of your last post instead of FeedBurner URL.

By the way, lets not forget that We all owe a big thanks to Andy, the creator of the fantastic CommentLuv plug-in and this great community. So, Thank you Andy!

    Hi Francisco,
Thanks for the comments. To be honest I really didn’t know about the feedbuner’s recent changes. However, I think it would be worth it to take a few seconds to fix the problem instead of leaving it to chance.

    Hi Satrap,
Thank you for giving us the heads up. I am just a fairly new blogger and I didn’t know anything about feedburner being able to steal commentluv links. I have checked mine and thankfully, the URL didn’t show the “feedproxy.google”. This post is very helpful for newbie bloggers like me, thanks again!

  6. I hadn’t signed up to feedburner all this time that I’ve had my blog simply because of this issue. Now that I have a clear step by step tutorial for doing this I feel much better at trying to add feedburner as a feed reader. Thanks for putting this together!
    All the best,
    Eren

  7. You don’t say. I would be so blind-sided to notice this behavour if not for reading your post.

  8. Hi Satrap,
Thank you. I never notice about that. May be because I didn’t use FeedBurner on my art gallery site, while other site I use FeedBurner but didn’t use CommentLuv on it. I am going to using both of them. Thank you for the tip on how to fix the problem.

Well John, I think its because of feedburner’s setting is. That is why changing it fixes the problem. Other than that, I couldn’t give you any more info as I am not really technical. Thanks.

Appreciate the heads up. I will be sure to check my links. Don’t want all our hard work wasted. I’m curious why that happens?

    Thanks again!

  16. Hi, thanks for the tip.

Though i believe there are downsides to this too – not as great though. I tried doing this about an year or so ago and found out the downside, i dont know if i’m one hundred percent accurate here but it was the reason i decided not to mess with it.

‘If we untick that checkbox it stops tracking clicks on our feeds’ – lol that’s all i remember for now.

But the above doesn’t mean much concern not for the majority atleast but i just wanted to spill this out of my tummy :D

This post has some good guidance for resolving issues with a posters back links not being followed and your very informative on exactly how to resolve it. Thank You.
I have not seen any problems so far and all links here seem to be good do follow links for me.

I will keep checking for this when i post anywhere now- I sure wish i could find a free program somewhere to show me all the links to my site (follow and no follow).Google don`t show them all,nor does Bing. This drive me crazy trying to figure out which ones they even see or cannot see at all( like links inside Java script.)

    Have a Great Day !

  39. Hi Satrap,

your article reminded me that I have to make sure Feedburner is not stealing my commnetluv links, which is something I had read in another post someday, and I had completely forgotten.

    Thank you

  40. Very informative. It made me informed of one thing that we must be aware of, we are spending our time and effort building links to our site only to find out that someone is stealing it and its no good. But at least I have learned how to get rid of this in case it happens to me. Thanks for this.

This is really a great blog post. Whenever you publish your blog post then after publishing the blog post every blogger wants that someone read their blog post. They want readers. They want subscribers who will read their blog post. Right? and feedburner helps to notify your readers about your new post. Feedburner is my favorite. ;)
